cat and covid

Hello,

I currently have covid, someone mentioned to me that I should try and isolate from my cat as I could pass it to her! I've googled and it seems that it's a possibility and now I'm worried.. she's been all over me, sleeps on my bed, is sitting on me now (i'm on day 5 of infection) so it seems like shutting the gate after the horse has bolted. Anyone else with cats, what did you do when you had covid, was your cat ok? Am I just unneccesarily paranoid that she's going to get ill because I have literally nothing else to do apart from sit in bed and google? tia

First time, I kept my cats away from DS who had Covid, just in case. This was earlier on in the pandemic though when there was more talk/fear of human to animal transmission.

This time, when me and other DS caught it, cat (our other cat died last winter) slept on the bed, stroked her etc. I just tried not to put my face by hers etc. She was fine.

Hope you recover soon.

thank you Smile I haven't stopped stroking her because she won't understand why but i've stopped kissing her!

i'm on day 5 of infection

You're most infectious between 24 hours before & 24 hours after symptoms start.

If she's gonna get it, you already gave it to her. I'd ignore this so-called "risk".

I gelled my hands before I fed my cat and tried to keep out of his way but in true cat style this just made him more determined to find me!

Do cats get Covid badly? Have any died from it?

TheCreamCaker · 13/11/2021 21:16

There are millions of us cat (and dog) owners in the U.K. How many thousands have had or have got covid? How many cases have you ever heard of about cats (or dogs) catching it? My husband, son and I all got Covid in July. Son was in hospital for 3 days, I was on a ventilator for 2 weeks. My elderly (17 or older) cat is still here.

Cuddle your cat, have her on your lap, and relax.

Well our son had covid in summer and our perfectly healthy hamster died that week.
However the rest of us all had it recently and the dog was fine. Not so much as a snuffle from him.

Bobholll · 13/11/2021 23:02

I cuddled my cat all day long when I had covid. He’s fine. I wouldn’t worry, I don’t think it’s passed onto them very easily. There are millions of cats in the UK & I’ve not heard any stories of thousands dying or becoming seriously ill from covid.

Maidofdishonour · 14/11/2021 00:40

We had Covid recently and I wonder if my cat had it too. He refused all food one evening (unheard of for him) and felt incredibly hot and was clearly not himself. There wasn’t anything we could do that evening and he was fine the next day.

A happy result would be if Covid is harmless to cats but lethal to fleas!! Because Advantage and Frontline don't seem to work any more....

XenoBitch · 14/11/2021 01:06

Millions of people with Covid, and a good percentage of them will have cats. If it was a big problem, we would have heard of it.
I have a friend who had Covid (and a cat)... she shut the cat out the house for 2 weeks. I thought that was cruel tbh. Your cat wont understand whatever measures you take to protect it.

Bebabelouba · 14/11/2021 01:08

I think my cat caught it. She sneezed quite a lot, had v warm ears, went off her food and slept even more than usual. She's 14. She seemed to recover fine though.

catprincess101 · 14/11/2021 07:48

thank you all, yes I am certain that we would've heard about it if cats got seriously ill from covid! I'm just lying here feeling rubbish, not able to do much and I'm used to being really busy so my mind is on the run Grin only comfort is the cat (since I can't taste so my next biggest comfort is gone) so i shall continue to cuddle her!

My kitten of 4 months caught it from me. Spent 4 days at vets on a drip with a 40 degree temperature. He survived. I knew he was ill as he had zero energy and could barely stay awake.
