Non mRNA boosters in UK?

soredust · 13/11/2021 10:59

How would I go about getting an Astra Zeneca or any non-mRNA booster vaccine if boosters get mandated for under 50s? My first two vaccinations were also Astra Zeneca.

Sorry can this be moved to the Covid messageboard. Posted in wrong section. Thanks.

I was told all boosters would be mRNA now and that they weren’t doing AZ boosters. Don’t know if it’s just my area.

gamerchick · 13/11/2021 11:05

Yeah I heard the same. I had AZ and my next one won't be apparently.

The JCVI believe the response from pfizer/moderna is more boosting
www.gov.uk/government/publications/jcvi-statement-september-2021-covid-19-booster-vaccine-programme-for-winter-2021-to-2022/jcvi-statement-regarding-a-covid-19-booster-vaccine-programme-for-winter-2021-to-2022
So are not recommending AZ, whether the evidence is really there is questionable (and remember AZ at the time were more equivocal on boosters than the more profit orientated suppliers)

My mum has been volunteering at a vaccination centre, everyone gets Pfizer or Moderna unless they have known allergies in which case they have to refer to their GP

Geamhradh · 13/11/2021 11:34

I'm in Italy with two AZs but they are t giving any AZ boosters here either. We'll get Pfizer or Moderna, whatever they have on the day.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 13/11/2021 11:45

Unless there's a medical reason why you can't have a Pfizer/Moderna vaccine, then I don't think you can.

The recommendation is that efficacy of is better is non-mrna vaccines are boosted with an mRNA one I think. As a previous poster said you will probably need to go through your GP if you have severe allergies.

Ok, that is useful to know. I will ask my GP if boosters are mandated for under 50s.

If you have a look at the Green book chapter 14a at the bottom of p23 it explains (may need to go to your GP armed with this)

Boosters won't be mandated, they will be offered, but I know why you mean!

sirfredfredgeorge · 13/11/2021 15:21

The current two dose vaccine isn't mandated, you just can't go into nightclubs or the theatre, or travel, or go about your business without the risk of isolating for 10 days when healthy.

I would not be confident that boosters didn't become "mandatory" in the same way, they already are for travelling to Israel for example.

soredust · 13/11/2021 17:09

I'm going to wait for the Novavax booster if under 50s are "offered" a booster Wink.

They are doing AZ if you can’t have mRNA for a medical reason
