What’s the latest research/data/scientific opinion on second vaccinations for 12-15 year olds?

Can anyone point me to anything other than the original JCVI statement from early September, recommending one dose - ie is anyone saying they could/should/might get a second, or that a second would be beneficial? I don’t know of any studies on this but I’m a bit behind on it all.

I’m dealing with an increasingly anxious/grumpy teen getting really sick of everything; she’s been very compliant with all measures and said today she feels let down being in this age group stuck between adults who will be able to do everything and under 12s who are exempt from the remaining measures and would like to be able to make her own choice about the risk/benefit of a second vax. She knows she’s lucky to have had one jab, really she does, I agree with her actually but couldn’t see anything on the horizon; is that correct? Any information would be gratefully received!

I've been wondering the same about 16 and 17 year olds. As far as I know, they don't get a second jab until they are 17 3/4.

Oxford university are doing an official study looking at the effectiveness of different vaccine schedules for 12-16 yr olds: comcovstudy.org.uk/about-com-cov3

Thank you @Wigeon that looks interesting (presumably a while before any results); she really wanted to join in the phase 2 trials last year but they weren’t recruiting in our area

Isn’t the UK pretty much the odd one out here? Don’t most countries recommend two doses for all age groups? We’re in NZ and it’s recommended 12 and up get 2 doses, which is what all the kids have been getting here and what was used in the clinical trials. About 90% of all people 12 and over in our area are fully vaxxed, which will include thousands of kids in the 12-18 age range so there doesn’t seem to be any hesitation to get a second dose.

PlinkPlankPlunk · 11/11/2021 22:18

Yes @Kiwi09 exactly that!

Not only were we (the UK) late to get going for this group, but the JCVI weighed up the myocarditis risk ( I think it was that) to be more than the benefit of double jabbing, unlike most other countries. It’s just going to keep on causing more and more disruption and uncertainty for them

@PlinkPlankPlunk I really feel for you guys. I know there’s a very small risk of myocarditis, but I think the benefits outweigh the risk.

My 12 year old was vaccinated back in August as soon as he was allowed. At the moment we’re hanging out for approval for 5-11 year olds. Pfizer’s just put in an application for approval here. I’m hoping to get my younger kids double vaxxed soon too.

I'm in Belgium and most 12-17 yos have had 2 doses. I only saw one negative news item where 2 boys did extreme cycling (quite a Belgian thing) right after jabs and there was a brief heart issue. Both were fine afterwards, but recommendation was to lay off extreme sport for a week after vaccination.

Taiwan has just halted 2nd doses for 12-17

Hopefully more research shows that it is safe. My dd would like her 2nd.

I haven’t heard of any cases of myocarditis here, but I didn’t here of one in Australia that got better. Our local children’s hospital, which is probably the biggest in the country, said they hadn’t had any cases a little while ago.

Kiwi09 · 11/11/2021 22:39

The studies so far showed the risk or myocarditis, which is rare in any case, was higher in boys than girls.

Kiwi09 · 11/11/2021 22:41

Did hear! I should have reread that before posting lol
