Teen complaining of breathlessness after vaccine

Bookridden · 11/11/2021 16:24

14 yo had the Pfizer jab yesterday. She had Covid 6 weeks ago and has made a full recovery. She's come home from school and is complaining of having been breathless all day. She feels she can't get enough air in her lungs. SATs are 99 and pulse is ok. Should I be concerned or is this just part of the normal side effects?

Best calling 111 for advice

TheReluctantPhoenix · 11/11/2021 16:26

99% Sats and complaining.

Unless there is something else to see, this sounds entirely psychosomatic.

Shortness of breath and difficulty breathing is a symptom that requires urgent medical advice at any time for any reason, not just vaccine related. Call 111.

Gubanc · 11/11/2021 16:39

Can't do any harm by calling 111.

On the 'phone to 111 now.

Is she anxious about school tomorrow?

Bookridden · 11/11/2021 18:51

Thanks everyone for the replies. She's been seen by her GP who isn't concerned. SATs and pulse remain fine, so must just be a slightly unusual reaction to the jab. Calpol and an early night will hopefully resolve.

She can have normal paracetamol can't she?

Calpol is normal paracetamol, just in a suspension.

I had this after my vaccine. It's likely to be anxiety if her stats are ok. That's what it was in my case.

Not necessarily, there are other alternatives. I had "ms hugs" with COVID, spasms of the intercostal muscles which made it hard to breathe. Ultimately harmless but terrifying. More seriously, there are blood clots. It's true that anxiety is a likely cause nut OP would be better consulting 111 or gp than assuming that.

Is her pulse racing when she’s struggling for breath?

I’d insist she has an examination

I can’t believe people are saying this is anxiety without having her be thoroughly checked out physically.

She's been to the doctor and he has checked her out and said that she is fine. Did you not read the op's posts?

@Porcupineintherough,

But all of those have real symptoms, not just a vague feeling.

If you are not using other muscles to breathe (e.g chest recessions) and your pulse is normal, it is more than likely anxiety.

And the 111 algorithm will say precisely the same.
