Is my (antivax youtube conspiracy theorist) mum right about this?

dd15 is having an operation this weekend under general. She had her covid vaccine last week.

My mum has kindly told me that there is evidence to show that it is very dangerous to have a GA within a month of recieving the Covid vaccine. I hate myself for listening to her but I did google it and can't find anything.

I'm hoping all the replies will reassure me...!

Just to add we have really fallen out over her attitudes to Covid and her obsession with Youtube as she cannot talk about anything else (other than her hatred of Meghan Markle).

Yes. Your non medical professional mum knows significantly more on the topic than the surgical team who will be operating. You should defo take her advice. Your hairdresser, the chap behind the post office counter and your local mechanic will also be able to offer great medical advice if you find you need a second opinion or just some general reassurance.

I had surgery recently.

One of the information letters in my pack was about the vaccine, stating it was safe to have 7 days before or seven days after surgery.

kimlo · 09/11/2021 11:18

she hasn't kindly told you though has she? She's told you something thats not true and put fear in to you.

Did they not ask for vaccination dates at the pre-op? They did at mine.

If you are really worried give the ward she'll be on a ring.

www.rcseng.ac.uk/coronavirus/vaccinated-patients-guidance/

from the Royal College of Surgeons.

"Essential urgent surgery should take place, irrespective of vaccination status.

Non-urgent elective surgery can also take place soon after vaccination. There is some rationale for separating the date of surgery from vaccination by a few days (at most 1 week) so that any symptoms such as fever might be correctly attributed to the consequences of either vaccination or the operation itself."

HitchhikersGuide · 09/11/2021 11:28

Yes. Even for just a very small procedure (not GA) I was told I couldn't have it within 28 days of vaccine.
I can't talk about the interrelationship between vax and GA as I didn't need to research it, but the reasoning I was given was because of the drop in immunity caused by the vaccine, you'd be more likely to suffer from infection,so unless an op is absolutely urgent and vital, it is better to wait until the immune system has got back up to speed post-jab.

CrunchyCarrot · 09/11/2021 12:08

Did she give you a properly researched and linked paper to prove what she is claiming? No? Didn't think so.

BananasAboutBananas · 09/11/2021 12:17

My dd had a minor surgery - we were told it was best to leave it a week between the 2 so if there were any effects from the surgery we would know it wasn't just vaccine side effects, no other reason (and they weren't that worried about that even!)

OP just some Flowers
What a rubbish situation.

Budapestdreams · 09/11/2021 12:19

PatrciaHolm has linked the royal college of surgeons advice .

As you can get a mild fever after a vaccine they prefer to wait a few days after the vaccine to do the surgery. This is not because surgery isn't safe. It's not because your immune system is weakened by the vaccine.

It is simply because after surgery there is always a risk of infection and the first signs of infection are fever and aches etc

If your fever is actually from the vaccine they will have to keep you in longer, do extra tests and potentially give you antibiotics you don't need, just to be on the safe side.

If your DD has no effects from the vaccine then she is fine to have the surgery as there will be no confusion.

MurielSpriggs · 09/11/2021 12:21

Why would you listen to anyone at all, including all us lot, never mind your bonkers mother when your daughter will be under the care of a consultant anaesthetist.

(Although he could be in on it. They claim to be qualified. But that's what they want you to think ...)

treguffin · 09/11/2021 12:38

well I am none the wiser but thanks anyway (i was being sarcastic about my mum saying it kindly, she was delighted to have a piece of bad news to tell me)

I will email her surgeon and ask.

That sounds like the best thing to do. My mum comes out with all this stuff too, it's hard sometimes. Talking to medical professionals tends to put my mind at ease.

treguffin · 09/11/2021 12:47

her vaccine was 7 days ago and she's had no side effects so far.

VitalsStable · 09/11/2021 12:53

If the hospital know she's had her vaccine and are happy to go ahead I'd take that as it being safe over your non medical professional parent's advice.

treguffin · 09/11/2021 12:59

I don't think they do know unless they have double checked her medical record. I'll wait to hear from them.

There is no drop in ummunity casued by the vaccine.
So that clears that concern up!

When searching for anything about the virus Google is the last search engine you want to try.

Have a try with DuckDuckGo and be staggered by the differing results.

You can google DuckDuckGo just to annoy them :D

treguffin · 09/11/2021 19:13

Thank you. The hospital staff emailed me back and said they'd checked with the surgeon and its absolutely fine (of course).

Sometimes I really dislike my mum. She didn't even ask how dd was feeling.
