Track and Trace; been contacted while travelling. what needs to happen?

DP is travelling (back) in the UK with our primary aged kids. DP is vaccinated (and has had covid). The children have most likely had asymptomatic covid as the rest of the house had it. DP has been contacted today by track and trace. he's currently between hotels (and travelling in a private vehicle all day to get to the next one). Tomorrow is the event for which he returned to the UK. does he need to self isolate until his PCR test is back? He can't go to his next hotel if so as it's only got one night availability. Is he legally required to do a PCR test, or is it a recommendation? He's been doing LFTs regularly as he's been seeing aged relatives, and we've lost a relative to covid already. Please help!

I thought that if you were double jabbed you didn’t need to self isolate?

Did he speak to someone fromT&T or received an email?

If email he should have a link to say he has the two jabs and can carry on as usual (at least it worked like this for ne!)

HerLadySheep · 08/11/2021 12:52

My understanding is the advice is to do a PCR test but if he is double vaccinated there is no requirement to isolate, even if he is waiting for test results.
Obviously if he develops symptoms that may change things.

Thanks all... my understanding is he doesn't need to self isolate but I wasn't sure if he had to PCR test, or if it was just recommended... and if he did have to PCR then did he have to isolate until the results came in (no symptoms).

He's still waiting to actually speak to someone from T & T but they will call at 4pm apparently. He's driving all day with kids in tow, if he needs to isolate then he may as well stop the drive as he'll need to come straight back again anyway, or at least go somewhere else while waiting for the results. I was trying to minimise impact if he has to isolate, but it sounds like he's fine due to double vaccinations.

I should say he wasn't vaccinated in the UK so it might not be on the 'system' so possibly the interim communication and the 4pm communication will be different...

That’s an important point..unless the rules have changed very recently if the vaccines, regardless of type, were not administered by the NHS then T&T might treat him as unvaccinated Sad, regardless of any supporting certificates/paperwork..Sad

Fingers crossed it all works out OK.

morepatiencerequired · 08/11/2021 13:25

thanks... looks like it's a wait and see at 4pm then!

He needs to isolate, he is regarded as unvaccinated if he wasn’t vaccinated in the UK.

Some countries' vaccine regimes are recognised here.

Some countries' vaccine regimes are recognised here.

Since similar problems have come up in a couple of previous threads is there any chance you know which ones, or provide a link? I and others in the family travel a bit into/out of the Uk and the sort scenario described by the OP and others is the thing of nightmares..

Unfortunately the NHS T&T website simply makes blanket statements along the lines of:

“You are not required to self-isolate if you are notified you have had close contact with someone with COVID-19 and any of the following apply:

“you are fully vaccinated”…..”You are fully vaccinated 14 days after your final dose of an MHRA-approved vaccine that was administered in the United Kingdom. “

It’s the “administered in the UK” caveat that’s the problem.

Overthebow · 08/11/2021 14:48

If he wasn’t vaccinated in the UK he will need to isolate for 10 days, UK doesn’t recognise external vaccination to get out of quarantine.

ittakes2 · 08/11/2021 17:15

If you are having a pcr test because you are a contact - as long as he doesn't have symptoms he does not have to isolate while he waits for results.

Ah, I’m aware of that link but I don’t think it applies to the OPs situation.

That link/list/info tells you which countries programmes entitle you to pitch up at UK Border and claim (to paraphrase) to be fully vaccinated and so avoid quarantine or other measures on immediately arrival…

The problem in the case in question here (and in another couple of threads) is the situation after their arrival.

Specifically it’s when an individual vaccinated overseas is actually the UK and then gets told by T&T he/she is a contact of somebody with Covid…In that case the non-UK vaccination suddenly counts for nothing and unlike somebody vaccinated in the UK the person vaccinated overseas has to isolate…

I believe J V T had said the rules ought to be changed to be more coherent but it appears that hasn’t happened.

Isn't that just showing which countries' vaccine certificates are accepted for entry into the UK?

The legislation for Self Isolation specifically says that only UK administered vaccines matter when it comes to not having to isolate after contact with a confirmed Covid case.

See www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2020/1045/regulation/2B#commentary-key-2d4b76b963f43be0205003079f6bd028 and the commentary about paragraph 6

"“(6) This paragraph applies if—

(a)the person (“NP”) has completed a course of doses of an authorised vaccine, and

(i)that course of doses was administered to NP in the United Kingdom, and

(ii)the day on which NP had the close contact which resulted in the notification described in paragraph (1) is more than 14 days after the day on which NP completed that course of doses,"

So as an update, we think he was probably exposed in the plane going to the Uk, going by the 10 day period, and actually he's been told he doesn't need to do anything, just follow the rules in our country of residence.... tho he did say the track and trace lady was very new to the role...

Many thanks for the update, maybe some common sense has crept into the advice being given..
