10 year old positive, worried

Please could someone tell me their experiences?

My ds10 came into my room this morning and was slightly tearful and said he didn’t feel well. He was hot. Took his temperature and it was 38.3 so did lft (strong positive straight away). Gave him calpol.

Temperature came down quickly and he perked up. Has his lunch and been chatting to friends and gaming although definitely not himself just not really poorly. As soon as calpol wears off temperature goes back up. Just taken again and 30 minutes ago and was 39. He was due calpol so gave him it, dropped to 38.4.

I just worry so much about him sleeping and me sleeping and his temperature rising.

Set alarm for 2 to take again.

Was anyone else’s children like this with Covid? He had runny nose for a couple of days before but generally fine. How long did it last for you? Did it get worse before it got better?

Just to add, when temperature rises he feels dreadful again

He’ll be fine, my 10 year or was like this too.
High temp, fever down with pain killers, then rises again.

I really wouldn’t worry them whilst they’re sleeping, both my kids have always gotten ridiculously high fevers (105.6oF for DS2 when he had influenza last year) for prolonged periods - I just make sure I give them meds before they fall asleep.
If temps go up they usually come and tell you when they’re older, but I would worry about a fever for a few hours if they’re otherwise asleep.

10 year old is a week out now and absolutely fine. Didn’t have anything other than fever, headache and a light cough.

Thank you, that is reassuring.

It’s such a worry isn’t it!

My DD was like this for the 1st few days. High temp came down with calpol then shot up again. By about day 4 or so the fever had left and she was just a bit tired and headachey. She's two weeks in now and she's pretty much back to normal.

Check on him during the night but hopefully the fever breaks soon.

RaoulDufysCat · 07/11/2021 23:44

DD had a really high temp too. Just keep dosing him with Calpol and if it is not as effective as you would like, piggyback Calprofen - so stagger the doses to work like Calpol 9am, Calprofen 11am, Calpol 1pm, Calprofen 3pm. Etc.

Good luck.

I thought about giving both but read somewhere you should’ve give ibuprofen with Covid, is that a load of rubbish?

Ds11 was same definitely do both to keep it under control I was advised this .You could tell when his was starting to rise became unsettled and I could just tell .
He was strong positive straight away , headache in morning . Lft line took longer to appear by day 8 I think.

Calpol was not bringing it down so did ibuprofen as well after 3rd day was more stable . Just kept note of times to avoid any confusion.

Hope he feels better soon, and you get some rest .

Sallydimebar · 08/11/2021 00:27

I did hear that about ibuprofen early on . Ds was in real pain 1st 2days with the headaches and I was told when temp rising it can make the pain worse.
So was told to do calprofen as well to keep it stable .

Only advised if In discomfort as temp when child is otherwise ok is just the body’s way of fighting the fever .

My 6 year old had a really high temp first couple of nights . Went up to 40 and I barely slept worrying but it’s a lot more manageable now and only seems to be going up a bit mainly in afternoon / evening . I did speak to 111 and they said if it was coming down with medication that was good and also the fact she was acting normally . They also said I could swap between calpol and calprofen every 4 hours . My 10 year old has had a normal temperature the whole time .

tocas · 08/11/2021 07:41

Fevers in kids not necessarily a bad thing OP, it's their body fighting the infection. Hope your son feels better soon

Thank you, I always worry so much in case of convulsions.

His temp is 39.3 so just given him calpol. Will get som ibuprofen in for him today

No experience of Covid (thankfully) but this pattern of temperature rising when Calpol wears off is pretty standard for any childhood viral illness (tonsillitis etc). I'm sure he'll be fine.

Has he had febrile convulsions before? If not then I’d think it pretty unlikely that he’d suddenly get them at his age. Just try to keep his temp down as best you can, you can alternate Calpol and Ibuprofen and a fan helps too if you have one.
ThePoisonousMushroom · 08/11/2021 08:44

All three of my children were like this a couple of weeks ago, it was exhausting. Took about 4 days for the fevers to properly break.
None of them had covid though, they had the nasty cold virus that’s doing the rounds.
Calpol absolutely fine to alternate with ibuprofen. Plenty of fluids (ice lollies etc if he won’t drink) and plenty of rest.
