Unpaid Carers.. vaccine.

Had covid vaccine late feb/early Mach sort of time (can't remember at the top of my head) and my second around the 20th May I believe.

I was offered it early due to having a disabled Ds and being his carer. Are unpaid Carers having the booster?

I'm not really expecting to... I'm under 50, relatively healthy etc. But the nhs website says to book if it's been a certain amount of time after your first!

Confused whether that means everyone who's had it earlier if just those over 50, people with health problems and healthcare workers.

Really confused. Assuming I would get an invite from doctors anyway.

I'm not desperate to have it but I do worry it's been a long stretch since my second dose compared to other people my age. Wish I waited until my age Group. Would have had the jab closer to this long daunting winter!

Yes definitely. I'm an unpaid carer and my booster it booked!

PinkSundae · 07/11/2021 07:26

I'm also an unpaid carer and haven't booked it, my last one was June but I'm a bit conflicted so think I'll wait and catch up to my age group like I wished after I'd had it early. It's really personal choice though so if you're scared and want it, get it.

Just out of interest were you happy getting it early? I was kicking myself as the blood clot scaring got underway the day after I'd had AZ so spent a long time afraid of the implications of that. I think that's put me off which I know is silly but can't help how you feel!

I’m eligible due to my husbands immune suppressant meds and being his carer.. I had my 2nd jab mid April but online system says I’m not eligible and so does 119. Getting worried now because husband due to start stronger medication and his consultant advised us both to get boosted. I have no idea how to go about rectifying this. Any ideas welcome

awalk · 07/11/2021 08:35

You can book online if you have been coded as an unpaid caregiver by your GP. My 2nd dose was on May 20th and I just booked on the NHS website 2 minutes ago. My booster appointment is on 16th November. Good luck

Angel2702 · 07/11/2021 08:36

You can book it now if you had second in May. Unpaid carers are still in this group.

Angel2702 · 07/11/2021 08:37

You may not be able to get it if waiting for age group as I don’t think they’ve changed plans to only give to over 50s.

awalk · 07/11/2021 08:38

Sorry forgot to mention I am only 47

Tomeeornottomee · 07/11/2021 08:39

I’ve been trying to book. It won’t let me. 2nd jab was mid April. I’m well overdue for it but system says I’m not eligible and when I call I get the same. I’ve been going round in circles for the last 2 weeks

Satsunday · 07/11/2021 08:39

@Tomeeornottomee yes you are definitely eligible. Main carers are listed as eligible on the NHS webpage where you go to book your vaccine. I think contact your GP next but also keep trying to book on the booking page in the meantime.

Timescale · 07/11/2021 08:42

I think some GPs are running slightly behind. My GP is currently only offering boosters to the over 70s. My second jab was mid April. So I just went to a walk in clinic.

Sadless · 07/11/2021 08:44

I booked mine yesterday on the booking website had last jab in May. I am 39 and a unpaid carer for my disabled child.
Booked in for 20th of this month.

I posted this on another thread yday, "Re group 6 - I'm 46, was in original group 6 as a gp identified parent carer, 2nd dose was 20th May. I'm not in receipt of Carers Allowance, the child I care for doesn't claim DLA, and nor are they particularly vulnerable to covid as an individual. Judging by the press publicity I wouldn't qualify for a booster but the National Carers Association has confirmed with the government that all original group 6 carers will be called for a booster apparently. I was able to book through the online system this morning for ten days time."

Keep trying the online system and also check for records with your gp that you're coded appropriately as a carer.

We've seen before that the system doesn't open to 100% of eligible people immediately, keep trying over the next few days, different times of day etc. I was quite far down my gp list when called in originally so I've decided to book online this time. If i get the gp recall before my current appt, I'll cancel that one and go through them instead.

Tomeeornottomee · 07/11/2021 08:48

Yeah I’m going to call surgery tomorrow and make sure everything that should be flagged on my file is actually flagged. DH has his booster next week and once he has that he will be able to start his new meds. But I’m going to want to avoid contact with him while I’m unboosted and that’s just not possible. My DD is having issues booking too. It keeps trying to send her to Merseyside for an appointment when we live in the south!

user1471462115 · 07/11/2021 08:52

Look up a drop in clinic. If you are six months after your second dose, the computer will let you book in when you turn up.

Tomeeornottomee · 07/11/2021 08:56

Closest walk in is 25 miles away. I’m going to keep trying. And trying. And will call surgery in the morning and get some advice/info.

MarthaJonesPhone · 07/11/2021 08:56

Had a text with a link from the GP last week to book. I worked out that it was exactly 6 months since my 2nd jab.

ColettesEarrings · 07/11/2021 08:59

@user1471462115 Not if she's under 50 and not coded properly on her records, it won't. Not if her tranche of the group hasn't been uploaded, it won't. There are lots of reasons why the online system doesn't have eligible people on it.

I'm sure you'll be called up eventually OP but there are a couple of things you can do in the meantime as we've mentioned, such as checking with the gp re records, and multiple checks on the booking website.

Caramellatteplease · 07/11/2021 10:18

Just out of interest were you happy getting it early?

Yes I was but DS was/is critically extremely vulnerable and the Nice guidelines had come out restricting access to care if the nhs became overwhelmed.

A blood clot the nhs knew how to treat if you knew it was a risk and were on the look out. Covid they did not.

firef1y · 07/11/2021 10:38

I've been able to book mine for the last few days (but going down to the vaccination bus on tuesday). Partner couldn't book his until yesterday.

user1471462115 · 07/11/2021 11:43

The Centre I work at would look you up on the online vaccination programme we use, and would do this at the front desk, would see you are six months since your second and would then proceed

Maybe this is only true at the large vaccination centres. I have no idea how the GP system works.

FallonMajor · 07/11/2021 11:57

I am coded as a carer on the GP/government system and I had my booster this morning, I booked it myself on the online system last week.

The person who did the vaccine said that DH can go as a walk in with my carers letter when he is 6 months past his 2nd vaccine next month, so I am hoping that will work.

With the first I felt fab. No side effects and less about clots at the time. By the time I had the second one they had stopped using AZ under 40's. I was so anxious that I nearly cancelled. I am so glad I did it now though! I was an anxious mess!

I’ve just booked my booster - 45 and fat.

To be honest, I don’t king jumping the queue anyway as I’ve never agreed with the priority we did in the U.K.

usernumberno46273 · 07/11/2021 15:53

Thanks all! 💕 I will look into it. Should be registered as a carer with gp still as they sent me a letter inviting for jab back in Feb, can't see how it would have been different now.

Whereas some Carers I know were just taking proof of Carers allowance but hadn't had an official letter from gp unlike me.

I had AZ when I did have it!

I'm fat too 😅 but bmi isn't quite high enough to be considered a risk (bmi 36/37ish).
