Should I delay my booster to take advantage of post Covid natural immunity

DH and I are both double jabbed and 50+ so boosters would have due In the next couple of weeks but we both caught Covid the week before half term. When we get called for our boosters which I understand will be delayed for 4 weeks due to catching Covid, should we delay for a short while (a month or two) to take advantage of the natural immunity we currently have to see us longer into the spring with good coverage or just get the booster when called. We both had very mild infections and so only felt rough for a couple of days luckily. Interested in how to beat achieve longer term protection.

I asked the same question. I am immunosuppressed and was hospitalised with covid so figure I had a solid doseof natural immunity and wanted to delay my booster to make the most of it. I was advised to get the booster now. Still not convinced but I did as advised.

roses2 · 05/11/2021 22:06

I would delay it. Trust your gut here not the advice from a box ticker.

RedLemon · 05/11/2021 22:09

Interesting. I’m in Ireland and the advice here is to delay a third dose booster for 6 months after having had lab confirmed covid infection.

Trixiefirecracker · 05/11/2021 22:14

I think the problem is not everyone will necessarily get a good bout of natural immunity from catching it, and how do you know if you have?

I'm going with this.

I had my booster exactly 28 days after I tested positive for Covid. I just thought get it done and didn't see the point of waiting. My GP agreed.

Sean2001 · 05/11/2021 22:27

I think we're going to be asked to have boosters for a very long time to come. Unless Covid gets forgotten about, which is of course possible.

I'm not vaccinated - my husbands had one dose and is waiting for his second. I think he should wait and space it out.

There's no need to overwhelm the body. Take it at your own pace and as someone else said trust your instinct OP.

We're all different and medicine should be individualised. Nothing of that sort is happening with Covid. So we have to take our own health care into our own hands, I think.

I’m immunosuppressed. I had AZ first time-I DO NOT want Pfizer as I have heart issues. I’ve been recommended to have the booster but they also said that I could wait until spring as I should still have immunity (I have not had COViD) as there’s not a a huge benefit in having it now as opposed to later, this was from my specialist who is world leading in my rare disease

Crispycremedelight · 05/11/2021 22:42

Meant to add each person is different, you can speak to someone about your options and make a decision based on the professional advice given

You would be allowed to have AZ for the booster if you can't have pfizer.

According to sage after six months AZ is only 45% effective at preventing symptomatic disease. I was very ill and hospitalised with covid 4 months after my second dose. The vaccines don't work as well for some people who are immunosuppressed like me.

ImTellingTales · 06/11/2021 17:42

I would try to time it for three months after infection.

PAFMO · 06/11/2021 18:46

Trust your medical practitioner rather than either your gut or a box ticker.
What does your GP advise?
How do you know you have natural immunity?

ImTellingTales · 06/11/2021 19:07

I’d be terrified of asking my GP.

CouldThisReallyBe · 06/11/2021 19:28

I'm having the same thought now. I'm due my booster in the next couple of weeks but currently have Covid. One of the regular Drs interviewed on BBC Breakfast the other day said that natural immunity from having had the virus is more of a sure thing than the booster, so my gut feeling is to delay the booster until later in the winter and capitalise on the natural immunity.

RainBow725 · 07/11/2021 00:05

I am in the same position and there seems to be very little medical advice out there on this. I was briefly hopeful a couple of days ago when someone asked JVT on bbc breakfast this very question but he didn't really answer it. I think the problem is - no-one really knows yet. My post jabs infection was pretty bad so I'm hoping I've got good immunity for the time being but it would be nice to know for sure.

toddlermom · 07/11/2021 00:10

I'm in same situation in irelqnd. I took an antibody test this week to check my levels (€60 or €70 at TMB ). And my antivirus levels are about 50,000 higher than needed! So I probably won't get the booster for a year - or two. Obvs I will chec my levels every 6 months or so to be safe. But at the moment my antibody levels are so high my doctor says I won't need for a year at least. I know it's expensive but it's such a comfort to know the exact numerical values and know I'm safe! Highly recommend it!!

Yes he did.
ImTellingTales · 07/11/2021 11:38

@PAFMO
So if we have a pronouncement from JVT on the matter, do you really think it’s reasonable for the OP or anyone else in the same position to make an appointment to discuss it with their GP? I just can’t begin to imagine doing that.
Anyway, what did JVT say?

Mosky · 07/11/2021 11:49

JVT said get your booster as soon as possible.

Personally, no I can't.
My comment was to offset MN Immunologists.

Crispycremedelight · 11/11/2021 22:18

No where local to me has AZ from the research I have done. This is my fear about immunity, I have regular blood tests due to my meds and again my hospital will not perform antibody test at the same time as my regular blood tests - this is also the same hospital that missed my partial aortic rupture so not holding much hope there anyway which makes me feel sad.
I hope your well on the way to recovery and healing well. I know it can be long journey, my hubby is nearly there from contracting it in March 20
