If my DD (14) has had her single vaccine, will she still need a PCR to travel to and from Spain?

Hi,

Sorry if this has been asked umpteen times before, but I'm not up to speed on this at all, as travel has just been off my mind for so long and the travel agent didn't seem to be sure about this either.

In DDs age group, they have only been offered dose, so does this actually count as fully vaccinated? She's really quite anxious about having a PCR. You can't perform the test yourself can you? Under supervision obviously.

Also, dp and I are both double vaxxed, so do we still need to do a PCR before and after travel?

This is for next spring, so of course all rules could very well be entirely different by then!

TIA Smile

Yes it doesn’t count as vaccinated for Spain, same as how the uk won’t accept the Spanish who have had one dose + prior infection (which counts as fully vaxxed in Spain). Post Brexit cooperation!!

The Spanish government website lists Janssen in their approved (see below). They also specify doble vacunación /pauta completa. (Double vaccination/full vaccination)

I would be surprised if they wouldn’t allow those with Janssen to travel since many Spanish people had this one too.

You may want to call the airline if you want to be 100% certain.

She's only had one dose. Unless it's the J&J vaccine, two doses are required to be classified as fully vaccinated. Spain will obviously not make an exception for anyone just because the UK have decided not to fully vaccinate that age group.

Hopefully they won't be needed next spring. Even if they are, the tests are not a big deal. Anyone doing it should be much more efficient than you would be doing it yourself. That was my experience of a PCR anyway.

This is from the Spanish CNN website too.

Sounds like he would be fine.

One dose of Janssen or two of the other vaccines

Para entrar a España, deberás cumplir el requisito de pauta completa de vacunación (la monodosis de Janssen o las dos dosis de las demás vacunas) y que hayan pasado al menos 14 días desde la última dosis.

1309username · 01/11/2021 13:28

Sorry, I assumed it was the Janssen one.

MrsStressyHead · 01/11/2021 13:33

Thanks for the replies.

She had Pfizer, so looks as though she will.

Do we also need to do the tests? I think we would all much prefer to do the test ourselves, but wasn't sure if this was allowed when travelling abroad.

You can do the test yourself OP. We've used Randox, which is self test and then either put in one of their drop boxes for collection, or return using a courier.

UmbilicusProfundus · 01/11/2021 13:49

Neither you nor your DP would need PCRs on either leg of the journey, just a day 2 LFT on returning to UK. Just check the government website for details.

I was there recently and didn't need a test. However, I'm EU based. I don't think your rules are different for EU/non-EU but rather based on where you're coming from and risk rate. You may need a booster though by next spring to be classed as fully vaccinated.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 01/11/2021 14:56

I didn't think under 18s were required to test on entry to Spain or has that recently changed?

if not vaccinated then you need a pcr test to travel to Spain

Yes, but as I am vaccinated, I didn't need a test. I was addressing the op's question of whether she would need a test.

anyone over the age of 12 needs to be vaccinated or tested

Has this recently changed? Family member age 14 travelled to Spain in the summer didn't need to PCR prior , I know some hotels were requesting this for over 12s but not as entry to country (family stayed in private accommodation)

Seainasive · 01/11/2021 15:13

As under 16s have no way of proving their vaccination status ( they can’t have the NHS app) your DD would have to do a PCR test before travelling to Spain. No test before coming back to the UK, only the day 2 Lateral flow.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 01/11/2021 15:20

@EasterIssland - ah, I see.

they can request it by paper to the NHS if they want, I normally display my nhs paper rather than the app when ii travel to spain (3 times this summer)

but the fact that they only have 1 vaccine is what makes them need the test.

they should have needed the pcr then i believe as it was included in June time (the kids in spain where being vaccinated in summer)
ittakes2 · 01/11/2021 20:36

I just literally spoke to the travel agent tonight about my children (15) going into Spain. One had one jab and the other recently had Covid, I was told they would need a negative pcr or a tma or a lamp test. But sorry no idea what these are!
