Do we HAVE to do another PCR?

DS (20 months) has started with red watery eyes, a cold/cough and has now developed a high temperature.

He tested positive for Covid on the 11th October so I’m pretty sure what he has now isn’t Covid.

He’s been back at nursery a week so has obviously picked something up.

Our nursery have a strict policy that a PCR has to be carried out if the children have a cough or temp (poor DS has been for several tests now as he seems to have constant coughs or colds since starting nursery)

He actually had no symptoms at all when he had Covid.

If he seems well enough tomorrow I will send him to nursery, but I’m wondering if they’re going to make him have another PcR?

Surely he could still test positive from his previous infection since it’s not been 90 days?

Only your nursery manager can answer that

Pissoi · 31/10/2021 07:16

You can't do another PCR for 90 days after a positive test due to the high probability of still testing positive during that time due to the high sensitivity of the test detecting latent virus.

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 07:19

@Pissoi

Yes, this is what I thought.

Yep this.

We have just booked PCRs for the household as littlest tested positive yesterday and it clearly says on the booking process that you can't have one within 90 days of a positive.

Whereismumhiding3 · 31/10/2021 07:34

You can't do another PCR test as he recently had positive COVID test

However don't send your son into nursery with a high temperature, it's obvious he has something. Pre Covid rules for viruses causing fever are keep them gone for 48 hours. Let him recover at home

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 07:41

@Whereismumhiding3

I didn’t say I would send him with a high temperature.
I said I would send him if he’s well enough to go in.

@Whereismumhiding3

The guidance from the NHS is to keep them home for 24 hours following a temperature (non Covid)

My sons nursery have accepted children in the nursery with a temp without having to wait 24 hours, as long as they seem well enough to be there and have had a negative PCR.
If they develop a temp of 38 or higher whilst at nursery, they get sent home.

OP posts:
Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 07:47

Hmm actually the NHS doesn’t even say 24hrs (I thought I’d seen 24hrs) it just says to keep them at home until the temperature has gone.

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 31/10/2021 07:50

Our nursery and school is 48 hours after a temp even pre covid

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 07:51

The only time our nursery as them to stay home for 48hrs is after D&V

Keep an eye that this isnt the post covid
Pims (or whatever it was renamed) temp red eyes etc

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 08:55

@HSHorror

I’ve not heard of this!! What is it?

OP posts:
Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 08:59

I’ve just googled. Hmm DS only has the red eyes from the symptom list.

He did vomit once yesterday morning, but nothing since.

He also has a cough and very snotty, which I can’t see as symptoms of Pims.

Maybe I will call 111 for some advice.

I'm not sure if this 90 days thing is true. My kids had confirmed covid in September and son had lingering cough . I tried booking him a pcr just out of interest as thought school might say something about the cough and although I didn't confirm the booking the gov Website let me go through all the stages of booking a new tesr and the official advice is to test if new symptoms even if recently had covid . I very much doubt your child would gave it so soon though

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 09:09

@Thirtyrock39

I don’t think he would either. He was only out of isolation last Wednesday.

He went to nursery last Thursday then again Mon -Wed this week.

He was off nursery for nearly 3 weeks and didn’t have a cough, cold or temp.
He’s been back a week and he’s ill again :(

fadingfast · 31/10/2021 09:19

If he vomited yesterday you shouldn’t be sending him in tomorrow anyway.

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 10:23

@fadingfast

He vomited once straight after breakfast.
It was such a small amount. More like a bit of baby milk sick than vomit.

He hasn’t been eating but he had a little peanut butter and a yogurt (not a normal breakfast choice but i wanted him to eat something) and he’d had milk.
He’d also had calpol when he got up.

I think it was more likely to have been caused my a mixture in his tummy than a bug.

Yea great send in your kid who’s been sick, is coughing and has a high temp… great for them as well!

Tailendofsummer · 31/10/2021 11:00

Is he old enough to say "I vomited" (or words to that effect) as if he does the nursery will not be pleased at all. If he passes on this illness then all the children who get it and haven't had Covid will have to be off to test etc, parents home from work. Not sure if it's easy for you to keep him off but a few days at home and his could be passed.

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 11:46

He was sick once yesterday morning at around 7.30 ish (he had breakfast at 7ish and it was roughly 20 minutes or so after)

He hasn’t been sick at all today, if (IF) he goes to nursery tomorrow, he doesn’t go until 8.30.
That will be 48hrs since he was last sick.

I’m not going to send him if he’s unwell.
So far his temp is down, he’s just snotty and coughing.

OP posts:
Dandy008 · 31/10/2021 12:17

Ignore posters who say to keep him at home! Send him to nursery, unless he has a temp.

I posted a few days ago about people taking their kids out when they were coughing or full of cold.

Most posters told me I was being ridiculous and people shouldn’t have to stay at home if they’re Covid negative but have other illnesses.

So going by the responses on my thread, then most people here won’t be telling you not to send him to nursery.

HamCob · 31/10/2021 13:09

Honestly, based on your OP I would be making alternative arrangements for him tomorrow regardless of the whole PCR thing.
He doesn't sound as though he will be well enough to go and let's face it if he does he will probably be sent home before lunch!

Dandy008 · 31/10/2021 13:38

@HamCob

I think that’s for OP to decide if he’s well enough or not.

Plenty of people on my thread, when I suggested people didn’t sound / appear well enough to
go out, told me I’m not a Dr and it wasn’t my assumption to make!

Agreed - hopefully he will wake up tomorrow as right as rain Smile
In my experience, it's always best to assume the worst though and plan accordingly so there isn't the temptation to send them in when you've got no choice because it's 7am and you need to make a decision based on having spent about 20mins with them.
I've worked as a nursery nurse and used to get no end of poorly children turn up who we would then inevitably have send home...once they'd had a couple of hours to spread their germs to everyone else!

Iwannabelikeyouohh · 31/10/2021 16:15

His temp has been okay this afternoon, he only had calpol this morning.

He’s just so snotty and coughing.😔
