My 11 year old tested positive almost 2 weeks ago. The first 2 days were bad with headaches, then she had cold symptoms on days 3-5 then seemed a bit better for a couple of days before going downhill again and wanting to sleep a lot. She lost her sense of taste and smell at some point after day 5.

She's eating very little and was only awake for about 3.5 hours yesterday, 4.30pm until 8ish, she was up for that time but the next thing we knew, she was back in bed sound asleep and she's still sleeping now, 2.45pm. We woke her a couple of hours ago to get her to drink some water.

I'm starting to worry but I don't know if it's worrying or not. She's not had the cough or fever at all but she really wants to do nothing but sleep and sleep. Has anyone else been like this?

I'd get advice on that to be honest.

And fluids into her. Food if possible.

How's her output? Is she using the toilet as often as normal?

Glitterblue · 30/10/2021 15:59

Yes she's been up for the toilet and we keep waking her up every so often to get some water into her. That was something I was worried about. She's had a little bit of dinner every night but not all that much and she's not wanting to eat the rest of the day. She was better in the middle of it, she had a few days of being awake from about lunchtime but since Thursday she's been so exhausted. Yesterday the headache was back as well.

I'd be concerned at an 11 year old still poorly after 2 weeks.
I would definitely seek advice now.

My DD (14) had it like this, just slept and slept. She was the only one in her outbreak at school not to bounce back after a few days. GP was reassuring but got her in for bloods and turned out she had underlying low iron so maybe that was contributing to it. She recovered in the third week but had to ease back into school. Hope your DD feels better soon.

You need to ring for advice.

Kitcat122 · 30/10/2021 18:36

I would get advice just to reassure. My daughter 15 at the time was very, very poorly when she had Covid. Not hospital ill but the illest I remember her being. She was very ill for a good 2 weeks then took about 6-8 weeks to get fully back to her sporty self. Doc recommended 800ug vit d for 6 months after.

Bagelsandbrie · 30/10/2021 18:38

I’d ring 111. I think she needs checking over.

Bobholll · 30/10/2021 19:03

I’d be pretty concerned if my child had been asleep from 8pm to 2.45pm 😱 and only staying awake 3.5 hours. It’s probably nothing but I’d 100% get her checked over. Or at least call for some advice.

Is she poorly in any other way? Cough? Cold? Nausea? Etc?

I was exhausted with covid recently but I could stay awake for the majority of the day. I napped maybe a couple hours in the afternoon.

I would want to get her checked out if she was mine lovely.

You're doing the right thing trying to keep her hydrated, but she's sleeping a lot for two weeks in.

Glitterblue · 30/10/2021 20:35

Thank you everyone, she woke up of her own accord at 4.30 and has been up since then, ate some dinner and is still up and feeling much better since her sleep. We were getting worried but every time we woke her for water, she was chatting to us and saying she felt absolutely fine in every other way, just really really tired.

She's saying she feels a lot better after all the sleeping. She seems like her normal self now, just a tiny bit pale.

I did actually try to get through on 111 and was on hold for a long time, during which she appeared saying she was feeling much better, so I gave up. The only symptoms she's had at all with it have been headaches, a bit of light-headedness at the start and cold symptoms for a few days, then lost her sense of smell and taste, and the sleeping. She never had a cough or a fever.

If she’s still the same on Monday I’d be ringing the GP, just to be sure

Mindymomo · 31/10/2021 07:16

Glad she’s feeling a bit better, it’s so worrying when there’s nothing we can do as parents, but to help them get through it. It does seem that for most people getting covid at the moment, that all they do is sleep, which we know is the bodies way of trying to cope and to fight the virus.

Friend of a friend's son (also 11) i know of was still sleeping 'constantly' 2+ weeks in. Some days he wasn't getting up at all. That was a week ago, not heard anything since.
