Are there data on how unvaccinated people are reacting to the mega cold?

Bellaisoneluckywoman · 29/10/2021 11:39

For context - I am not in the anti-vaxer camp. I've had both vaccines and am booked in for my booster.

BUT....

I got the dreaded 'mega cold' thing nearly a month ago now and am still not fully well. Not is DH (who is also fully vaccinated).

A vaccine sceptic has told me 'the vaccine destroys your immune system'. Now - this may well be utter nonsense, but I have been shocked and frankly quite scared by how ill a sodding cold has made me.

So - am wondering if there are any data on how unvaccinated people have been responding to the same mega cold virus. I would find it hugely reassuring to know (rather than hope/assume) that they are responding in exactly the same way. If not - would rather suggest that the sceptics have a point.

Whether that is enough to offset the risk of dying from Covid is another question, clearly, but am trying to be entirely objective hre.

Are there any medical experts on here who might know the answer to this question? The data must be out there.

If some people are getting the mega cold and some are getting mild, regular colds, does that suggest it's an actual mutant virus, not just an immune reaction from being locked down?
Unless the regular-cold people are frontline workers who haven't been isolated?
What does the mn anecdata say about that?
I'm actually very curious.

herecomesthsun · 30/10/2021 09:00

Viruses mutate.

But I think it is not helpful to think of the cold as a "mutant virus", it is a cold.

chocolateorangeinhaler · 30/10/2021 09:22

If the vaccine destroys your immune system then everyone would have full blown AIDS by now that had had the vaccine. People would by dying from tetanus, polio, whooping cough, smallpox. The list goes on. The vaccine sceptic is an utter idiot.

REDHERO · 30/10/2021 09:29

Vaccines do not destroy the immune system.

Do not listen to idiots telling you scare stories.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/10/2021 12:53

@Sugarandtime

Those who have had this very bad cold, have you all still been wearing masks when out and about?
Yes - but not at work. Not allowed anymore. And the people I work with, all 1600 of them, don't have to wear masks anywhere because they're children. Children with heavy colds who are sent in because it's not Covid.

When everybody had to wear masks and there was distancing/bubbles, nobody had colds. Apparently, at least two weaker strains of flu appear to have disappeared/become extinct over the same period, so it makes sense that the milder cold viruses could have met the same fate, whilst the worse ones continued.

Take away distancing and masks for thousands of vectors of infection (children in particular, but also everybody else in shops/public transport even where you're still supposed to wear them, etc) and the remaining viruses have a really easy way to spread.

NotMyCat · 30/10/2021 13:06

I wish it did destroy your immune system because mine is fucked
3 vaccines and no sign of my body stopping attacking itself Grin

Skysblue · 30/10/2021 13:18

A GP told me that because we all had such great hygiene last year, plus lockdowns, our immune systems didn’t get exposed to as many germs as normal and so isn’t as good. The GP suggested getting the flu vaccine just to stimulate the immune system a bit and make it better able to fight off other threats.

Dunno if that helps.

RoseAddict · 30/10/2021 13:57

I’m unvaccinated but not anti vax and DH is vaccinated. I’ve had covid twice and we also had the mega cold. Dh had the mega cold MUCH worse than I did but he only had covid once and either the vaccine or his previous immunity or a combination of both stopped him getting it the second time despite snogging me while I was ill.

Everyone gets so defensive when you question the vaccine! Seems you not allowed to question anything against the narrative these days 🙄

When the question is “do vaccines destroy your immune system”, are you really surprised people are answering in the manner that they have been? It’s a bonkers question.

It's not a bonkers question. Vaccine induced ADE is real, it happened to animals in the SARS vaccine studies and its happened to humans with previous vaccines. Scientists managed to work out why prior to the development of the covid vaccines so hopefully it won't be an issue.

From full fact.org

The Medicines and Health product Regulatory Agency confirmed to Full Fact that antibody dependant enhancement was considered a theoretical risk at the time of initial approval, but there is no evidence that the vaccines cause ADE.

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 30/10/2021 15:11

How would I know if I've had the mega-cold but only very mildly because my immune system isn't in pieces because I haven't had the CV vaccine; or I have dodged the mega-cold and just have a minor sniffle?

ADE is not the same thing as immunosupression though. They're in fact opposites.

So no, the vaccines do not "destroy" your immune system making you more susceptible to other viruses. There is no plausible mechanism for this happening.

And no, the vaccines do not cause ADE (antibody dependent enhancement- which cause someone to become unwell when infected with the pathogen they innoculated against) despite anti-vaxxer claims that vaccinated people are getting more sick from coronavirus infection than unvaccinated.

We know this because billions of people have been vaccinated with the coronavirus vaccines.

Double jabbed. Got The Cold and was laid up for a week. OK after 8 days.

Antibody dependent enhancement, where the body produces antibodies that actually help the virus enter or replicate, the does exist but that is what clinical trials are for, to make sure that there aren't any adverse reactions to a vaccine.

Conversely, you can also get cross immunity where antibodies for one virus recognise other different viruses with similarities. You might remember news stories at the beginning of the pandemic about a trial to investigate whether the BCG gave cross immunity to COVID? The BCG has been shown to offer non-specific cross protection to other pathogens, such as Candida albicans and Staphylococcus aureus.

I had "the worst cold ever" turned out it was covid after all, despite testing negative the first time around.

Yes here is the data

"the narrative"

Oh my - which YouTube video did you get that from Grin

Sean2001 · 30/10/2021 19:14

What mega cold?

I’m not vaccinated and I’ve had no mega cold nor Covid. Same for the rest of my unvaccinated family.

It's mega cold that a lot of people have atm, not a compulsory one that everyone must have Grin

It's been in all the media so I'm sure you can find out if you are interested

Point proven above!

I had both vaccines and for me the "mega cold" lasted as long as a normal cold. I was snottier that usual for a cold, but only felt properly ill for one day. My dd also had it and she's too young for the vaccine - she got ill before me and was still ill after I was better.
