Halloween with positive case

So DD (7) just had positive lft and we're all getting pcrs later today. Me and DS (10) tested negative on lfts, DH not tested yet. I think in theory if DS is negative then he doesn't have to isolate (and nor do I or DH as double vaxxed) but in reality it seems odd that DS could still go swimming and to the cinema over the weekend with a negative-testing parent as we'd planned.

My specific question though is about trick or treating – had planned to go out round the estate but obviously DD can't now. Seems wrong to let DS do it really as he is from a house that definitely has Covid?! Although allowed in guidelines. And also what about having other trick or treaters come to our door? Should we just put up a sign saying sorry but we can't do it this year? Doesn't seem right to even put out sweets when we know there's Covid in the house.

Put the lights off and don't go out.

xmasdealhunter · 28/10/2021 12:27

I would let ds go, as it's allowed within the guidelines, but I wouldn't put sweets outside. I think I would also have him put a mask on/pull it up as he went to each door.

PlugUgly1980 · 28/10/2021 12:28

Same here, we're having a Halloween party tea of our own (ordered Halloween decs off Amazon and I'm making some party bags/trick or treat bags for our two as a surprise as they're bitterly disappointed. Wouldn't usually bother with anything other than pumpkin carving but their half term has been a right off so trying to make it fun. Then a sign on the door saying sorry we can't partake, please don't knock we have covid.

Angel2702 · 28/10/2021 12:29

We have similar DD positive everyone else negative. Her brothers have been going out to park etc but won’t be going trick or treating. DD isolation ends Saturday. Going to get a relative to buy some sweets and put out at top of driveway for Sunday so they won’t have been inside our house at all.

Dress up as a plague doctor?

Actually, if we got anyone in the house with covid, we'd stay in, watch Strictly, eat supermarket Halloween specials, drink spooky themed Halloween cocktails and mocktails and have quite a nice time anyway.

Also we will try out listening to this

Just have an internal Halloween this year within your household.

The kids can still have chocolate. Maybe do a treasure hunt in the house instead to make it fun

What is a Halloween theme cocktail. Sounds interesting.

BunsyGirl · 28/10/2021 12:39

I have the same issue. Luckily I live in a very quiet rural area so I am going to tell my neighbours (as I know them all) why we won’t be answering the door.

Ha ha, oddly enough DS was going to wear a raven costume which he said looked like a plague doctor – it was obviously fate!

Yes, will definitely try and have our own little party if we can get some nice things delivered – sounds great to be honest. Hopefully if we don't decorate outside and keep the outside light switched off we won't get any knockers.

Will have to send DS into school next week though, while DD goes rapidly stir crazy at home RIP my deadlines

One of the reasons we won't be answering the door this year. You don't know which households could be infected and spending covid door to door.

IsabelleSE19 · 28/10/2021 13:14

Thanks herecomesthsun – some lovely ideas there

Same as us. Such a shame as I love decorating the house normally, but no decorations equals no knockers here.
toffeeshock · 28/10/2021 13:54

We’ll put a bowl of sweets outside the house to stop people knocking and when we go out we won’t be knocking on doors; we’ll do what we did last year which is whenever the DC spot a pumpkin/ decorated house we put sweets that we’ve bought into their buckets. They loved it last year and enjoyed it just as much, especially as people in the area really made an effort with decorations.

BogRollBOGOF · 28/10/2021 18:01

Trick or treating is pretty low-risk. The child stays outside and it's fleeting contact anyway.

Our area generally does the visit decorated houses only so most vulnerable older people don't and don't get visitors. If you decorate, put a sign up wishing people a happy halloween but please don't knock. Last year I put up my sock hanger loaded with packs of haribo onto a tree so no door knocking was required, but there was still some fun to be shared.

Artie30 · 28/10/2021 19:07

Let your kids eat the sweets you would have given oth. Technically your son can do it but personally I wouldn't and I wouldn't hand out sweets either. My kids had a fab Halloween last year without trick or treating!

OnceuponaRainbow18 · 28/10/2021 19:17

Let the one without covid go T&Ting! It’s outdoors, they don’t have symptoms and on Monday can go to school inside without any social distancing

mumandbambinos · 28/10/2021 19:33

I have 2 kids with Covid in the house, including myself. My older kid and me come out of isolation tomorrow but the younger child (DS) doesn't come out of isolation until next Wednesday so misses first 2 days of school. Even if DS doesn't come to the door, I don't feel it is the done thing to hand out sweets and DH is annoyed and is making out that I have spoilt Halloween as I have changed my mind about letting people knock and now we have to take decorations down. 80% of the kids knocking will be from our local school and three kids in DS' class live on our road! DH thinks I am being paranoid and said that people don't care about Covid. I will be taking the older child trick and treating and she can share her sweets with DS and obviously they can have the sweets that I bought.
