Are autistic 12-15 year old children put into the vulnerable category?

My 12 year old daughter got a letter today to say that she’ll need 2 vaccine doses because she’s considered vulnerable. She’s had the first one already. I’m just wondering if her autism could be the reason?

We are going today. They missed their school slot due to being off ill/ waiting for PCR results. And then we find out that they are clinically vulnerable.. one would have thought we would be told.

We got the same letter yesterday. 2 doses recommended

Where I live, no schools have even started the programme so it's easier to use the vaccination centres.

DS1 is Yr11 16, ASD anxiety, nothing about 2 vaccines. In fact was a real saga to get even 1 done as he was too old to have it in school as already 16 (Sept birthday), but he couldn't be booked online either. Had a standard letter arrive which has him in the 12-15 category, so presumably that's why I couldn't book before.

Has anyone in Scotland received notification about their autistic child being offered a 2nd dose yet?

Apparently you can ring 119 about this sort of thing I think. See, there is no guidance on when the second vaccines should be given either. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I read the information about Pfizer at the vaccine centre which says second dose should be after 21 days at least.

So I assume when they were doing the initial roll out & we had to wait 12 weeks that's the maximum time because at that time they didn't have as much available?

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 28/10/2021 17:43

Despite dd being eligible and due for her 2nd jab I can't book it. She's eligible because of me but if she's now eligible because of autism we haven't heard that.
This system has been so difficult to manage for the vulnerable people.

BlackeyedSusan · 28/10/2021 18:51

@PastMyBestBeforeDate You have to book the second 12-15 dose through your GP according to the letter advising that you are eligible.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 28/10/2021 19:00

Yeah, the text from the GP links me to a site which can't do booking for paediatric cases. The phone number linked to a very confused person and 119 can't do it. I've been waiting all week for a call back.

mumwon · 28/10/2021 19:37

dd an adult lives in (un) supported accommodation - as she had seen doctor about hoarding he put her down as LD
Thank goodness

gogohm · 28/10/2021 19:41

Asd was enough to get dd early vaccination in March (she's over 18) and me as her carer. Also got offered a booster

BlackeyedSusan · 29/10/2021 00:56

Apparently arrange second vaccination with GP 8 weeks after the first. Yippee sometime between Christmas and New Year! That's going to be convenient Hmm

I agree

Itsnotover · 29/10/2021 14:59

Ugh. Honestly the whole system is a mess.

I phoned up our GP to ask about dd3’s second jab and was told that they no longer offer covid jabs at all! The person told me she would have to write to the lead nurse and ask if a vaccine could be obtained just for her 🤷🏻‍♀️

BlackeyedSusan · 29/10/2021 15:23

Bloody hell. Can they not offer you an appointment elsewhere?

imip · 29/10/2021 15:49

Yes, I had a double jab letter also. Dd is 13 and ASC diagnosis. Very healthy, no other health complications!

Iheartbaby · 29/10/2021 16:54

Why would this be the case that your more at risk, I’m worried now, I never new this,

Itsnotover · 29/10/2021 17:49

It will just be that data has been examined and autistic people will be considered more likely to get seriously ill with covid based on hospital admissions etc.

PastMyBestBeforeDate · 29/10/2021 22:42

We got it sorted. Finally found someone at the vaccination company who was able to agree they weren't going to be able to vaccinate her within 12 weeks and give me an alternative contact. That contact worked a minor miracle and after escalating it, called her in this afternoon Grin
