Third dose after 2 x AZ

Senso21 · 26/10/2021 10:47

I’m booked in this Friday for third dose as CEV
Feeling v apprehensive and unsure. Had AZ for first 2 jabs, unwell with the first and fine with second. I understand the third will be Pfizer and I just don’t feel comfy with have all these jabs and them being mixed.
Just looking for a bit of a hand hold or any experiences with having your third doseConfused
Have so much on with work and home next couple of weeks and just really can’t afford to be ill from vaccine, but equally the same goes for Covid too!

Had mine with my flu jab at the weekend, 3rd vaccine and I had 2 x AZ previously
Bit of a sore arm (flu arm was worse!) and a v v slight headache but that could have been lack of caffeine!

NotMyCat · 26/10/2021 10:49

Oh and I was unwell with 1st AZ and fine with 2nd

SpindelWhorl · 26/10/2021 10:54

Hi OP. I've had two AZ, and had my third jab last week which was Pfizer. I'm feeling absolutely fine, honestly.

My nonsensical output on MN has continued unabated Grin

And I was very glad to get the extra protection.

Upsky · 26/10/2021 10:57

DH had two AZ and booster pfizer. Zero reactions.
I also had AZ and have my pfizer tomorrow.
I'm delighted to get pfizer because all the evidence points to this mix giving much stronger immunity.

BillyAndTheSillies · 26/10/2021 10:59

I had 2 AZ and my 3rd dose was Pfizer. Similarly I was nervous and I did have some side effects but I also had them with my first AZ. Pfizer seemed to last longer though, I had muscle aches like I was coming down with the flu for a fortnight afterwards but nothing that didn't stop me carrying on as normal. Thank

I was unwell with the first AZ and apart from a very slight headache I was fine after the second. I had Pfizer as a booster on Sunday, shivered throughout the night on Sunday into Monday and was really sleepy and achy yesterday. I feel a bit more human today.

PurpleDaisies · 26/10/2021 11:08

The point of mixing is to produce better immunity. I’m hoping for Modena for my third (if I get one) because Ive had Pfizer before. There have been studies showing it’s both safe and effective to use different vaccines. It’s not a new thing just for Covid.

I’ve had Pfizer for my two doses. The first one I just had a sore arm. The second I felt a bit grotty for a day but that was it. It’s definitely worth it.

Tigerblue · 26/10/2021 11:23

I had AZx2 and Pfizer as my booster 12 days ago. I had a very slight headache the following morning, which had cleared after I had my breakfast without taking painkillers. My arm was sore for a couple of days, but I think pharmacist jabbed me higher, as she was about to do and could see I'd recently had something in my arm (flu vaccine 10 ten before). Work was no problem.

I'm in one of the areas affected by the testing debacle. Our cases are the highest they've ever been recorded, lots are wearing masks locally now and back to stepping out into road for distancing, but there's a fair few out coughing a lot, so I'm relieved and feel lucky to have had a booster.

Thanks so much everyone, really helpful and feeling more confident about having it!

The reason for the third dose being Pfizer is that AZ uses a chimp virus (adenovirus) to "deliver" the vaccine to where it needs to go in your body.

AZ used a chimp virus as humans would not have encountered it before so would have no prior immunity to it and their body would not mount an immune response to it.

As you have had two of the AZ vaccines, your body will recognise the chimp virus and may mount a response to it before the vaccine can be "delivered".

So, in order to ensure you are being "boosted" Pfizer or Moderna are being used for the boosters.

I hope that this makes sense as and helps you

ifonly4 · 28/10/2021 07:57

OP, hope it goes ok for you. I had my booster after two AZ, and was absolutely fine. No tiredness or anything.

winterisaroundthecorner · 28/10/2021 08:36

I had Az and happy to get any if I was offered a booster. And it seems like mixing different vaccine produces better immunity.
It's better to be protected, than facing unknown consequences of virus, with potentially waning immunity.

Cantstopthewaves · 28/10/2021 08:40

Had 2 AZ and the Pfizer booster two weeks ago.
It was fine.
Had headaches with the AZ 1st & 2nd. Nothing at all after the booster.

maddy68 · 28/10/2021 08:48

I had az which I was unwell with and Pfizer for the other. No side effects at all

I'm due a booster (6 months post 2nd dose) but unable to book as not invited. Husband, same age, same GP, same date 2nd dose, has had text invite. GP receptionist says they can't sort it and the number she suggested for the 'vaccine gateway' has a recorded message and then cuts out.
Has any one encountered this and does the system magically cure itself and allow you to book? TIA Smile

StarCat2020 · 28/10/2021 11:09

You should be able to book on the portal after 190 days (6 months and 1 week).

Whether you can or not is a gamble it seems.

vjg13 · 28/10/2021 16:49

Thanks, managed to get the Gateway to send me an invitation so can go to walk in one tomorrow.

Senso21 · 03/11/2021 11:56

Thanks all. Had it done and not even so much as a sore arm. Just thought I’d report back incase anyone new reading was also worrying

I am so confused

I thought adenovirus was the cause of one of the 3 most common colds and therefore we have all encountered it?

And I thought I was supposed to mount an immune response to the vaccine?!

DaisyNGO · 03/11/2021 14:11

OP, thanks, I was a bit puzzled by the mixing with the 3rd one.

now I'm more concerned what the weather will be like as the temp clinic has closed and the booster queue is about 20 deep whenever I go past!
