Two years is 24 months?

It seems for weeks now some posters refer to restrictions first brought in in March last year as going on for two years. Even now, that's almost half a year out. I don't think I've seen this the other way round (i.e. restrictions first brought in a year ago).

Restrictions were brought in 18 months ago (okay 20, but nobody says ‘20 months’).

I do say Covid started almost 2 years ago or ‘we’ve been in this for 2 years’. It kicked off end of December, reached Europe in January. It took a couple of months to develop but we’re 22 months off the start line so it’s not unreasonable for people to use the term 2 years already.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 25/10/2021 12:32

People use it in relation to UK restrictions which were 19 months ago.

Yeah that’s a bit out. But give it another month and it will be closer to 2 years than to 1 year. ‘One year and a half’ can be a bit of a mouthful.

Although people might be thinking in calendar years as well. By which we’ve been in restrictions for the most part of 2 years.

March-December 2020, that’s almost 10 months out of 12.
January-now 2021, which again is 10 months out of 12 and counting.

SickAndTiredAgain · 25/10/2021 12:40

People are either just rounding up from 19 months, or they’re thinking “it was almost all of 2020, and we’re now almost through 2021, so 2 years.”

Does it matter?

thewhatsit · 25/10/2021 12:42

Ha that always bugs me too.

As well as when people talk about not having gone to a restaurants etc in two years when restrictions have prohibited this for what, 9 months total?

littlepeas · 25/10/2021 12:54

I can see why people feel that it's been 2 years. Nearly the whole of 2020 affected and now nearly the whole of 2021 affected too.

MarcelineMissouri · 25/10/2021 12:58

It feels like it’s been going on FOREVER so actually it seems perfectly normal to me that people are rounding up. I am often surprised if I stop and think that at the start of last year life was still normal, or that so far only one Christmas has been impacted. It really feels like much longer.

It's been bugging me, too. It's not 'the better part of two years' as I've read, and other weird claims. I was counting the months on my fingers last night when I couldn't sleep as it just didn't make any sense. Covid might well have been rumbling around for a few months beforehand, but March 2020 was when most governments worldwide began bringing in restrictions.
TheDuchessOfMN · 25/10/2021 13:00

I usually say/think 2 years.
Covid-19 = 2019
It’s almost the end of 2021 now 🤷‍♀️

Artie30 · 25/10/2021 13:13

It is nearly 2 years. We weren't restricted until March 2020 but covid came about at the end of December 2019 I believe. I remember Dp watching the news around New Year's Eve and saying how serious this could - I just laughed it off - I now look back and think wtaf!

I personally think it was spreading earlier than what's been documented in the U.K. I was very ill December 2019. My children were very ill jan 2020! One of their classmates had traveled to a problem country in late 2019. When my kids were ill I remember saying I had never experienced anything like this as a parent before!

milkyaqua · 25/10/2021 13:14

It wasn't declared a global pandemic until March 11, 2020.

RobinPenguins · 25/10/2021 13:15

If someone on here describes their child as 20 months old they get “omg just say 2”. Most people I’ve seen say “nearly 2 years”. Because it’s been nearly 2 years.

You know that just because politicians say you can do this, doesn't mean it's that good an idea?

milkyaqua · 25/10/2021 13:19

It will be two years in March 2021.

milkyaqua · 25/10/2021 13:19

Shit, 2022! March 2022.

I agree. It's been on my radar since Jan 2020, and it's November next week. Aka almost 2 years.
milkyaqua · 25/10/2021 13:23

Two years is 24 months. Not what feels like two years, or what is only vaguely 'close' to two years, as in further away from one year.

The first lockdown in China was Jan 2020. This is almost 2 years ago. Some people think more globally than others.

24 months is indeed two years tho, so have a point 🤷🏻‍♀️

milkyaqua · 25/10/2021 13:25

We are still a fair way from January, if you were to go by that measure.

IsabellesMissingSock · 25/10/2021 13:26

Yes, just a few short weeks.
milkyaqua · 25/10/2021 13:31

Fuck me! January is 10 weeks away, and Wuhan didn't lock down until the 23rd January.

IsabellesMissingSock · 25/10/2021 13:33

Correct.
ComDummings · 25/10/2021 13:38

Well 2 full calendar years have been fucked, 2020 was a write off basically, February was when things were getting shite (globally) and 2021 has had this cloud of dread hanging over it and we are near the end of it now. “Will there be another lockdown, will Christmas be cancelled” etc. So I totally get why people say 2 years.

x2boys · 25/10/2021 13:50

Well it is nearly two ,years ,it started in Wuhan in 2019 hence COVID-19 ,I started hearing about it in the January and February of 2020 ,it may have been in the UK longer who knows ?
It feels a lot longer than two years tbh.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 25/10/2021 13:52

It does feel like longer than 19 months, but in July (freedom day) some people were saying restrictions have been in place almost 2 years. I've just never seen it rounded down.
