What a confusing mess and why?
Is it because 1 jab has not been effective enough in college and 6th form cases?

Where does that leave my 15 year old whos had 1 jab last week can she only have 2nd when she turns 16 in the new year?

Considering the rest of Europe and most of the world approved this in May, and had over 12s fully vaccinated as early as June, I wouldn’t say it’s a confusing mess. It’s a delayed mess, the UK are 5-6 months behind with this decision.

A mess after all, I agree with that.

I have friends with 16ys. They had their first jab at the start of September and two were called for a second jab to have over half term. I think the plan was always for that age to have both doses, and only 12-15y so far being offered one - I suspect that's likely to be two in the end as they aren't classed as fully vaccinated for lots of purposes, especially for overseas travel.

I agree. I always thought this as well.

Why they couldn’t be honest about this is anyone’s guess.

My 16 year old had her 1st jab a while ago.

I kept getting texts asking me to book her second jab, which I did, but they phoned to cancel it the day before as 16/17 year olds weren’t supposed to be getting the 2nd one

worriedatthemoment · 22/10/2021 22:01

No the plan for 16 year old was one jab to start with , then they would decide the time frame for a second or if needed as worried about reaction second jab
My 16 year old had wnd august not been called for a second and can't book a second yet

worriedatthemoment · 22/10/2021 22:04

@EileenGC but its a decision the uk made due to risks of jab compared to risk of covid , cev children etc were done
Like when europe halted for a bit when az news cane out

EileenGC · 22/10/2021 22:08

Europe didn't halt, they reallocated AZ to different age and priority groups.

The UK were the only ones taking this decision, months after teens in other countries had already been fully jabbed. Now, I'm not a vaccine expert and I can't say for a fact which of the decisions was the correct one.

But to me it seems madness that they actively chose to not vaccinate this particular group, whilst reopening schools with NO precautionary measures in them. Other countries had 3+ months' experience with the vaccines in teens, and had assessed the risk of Covid was still higher, so took appropriate measures on top.

AlexaShutUp · 22/10/2021 22:09

I'm glad that this decision has been made as dd wants her second jab. However, she has had covid since getting her first jab, so does that mean that the second dose will have to be delayed? How long do you have to wait after infection?

dancinfeet · 22/10/2021 22:12

@AlexaShutUp it’s 28 days after a positive PCR. My dd had to delay her first jab due to having Covid

Ah, OK, thanks. That's will probably only push it back by a couple of weeks then.

Wakemeuuuup · 22/10/2021 23:09

I hope it's true. My16 year old had his in August and is now 10 weeks post jab. He needs his 2nd soon

worriedatthemoment · 02/11/2021 08:07

@EileenGC thats because they were waiting for the advise , they waited and got the more at risk done nothing wrong woth that

The conclusion from the JCVI (not all of whom are a) medics/scientists b) transparent with their agenda, though hopefully now that the anti-vax retweeter has gone that problem has been solved) was NOT that the risks outweighed the benefits, but that the benefits were not AT THAT TIME believed to be that significant.
The CMOs who ARE all medical experts overruled that finding.
The confusion among the great British public seems to have been that many people believe the JCVI to be the ne plus ultra of vaccination recommendations, when it's been proved to be a complete and utter failure on this issue. Quite an important issue.

Wakemeuuuup · 02/11/2021 11:24

Are 16-17 yr olds actually getting the 2nd jab? I haven't seen it reported anywhere

Incognito22333 · 02/11/2021 14:52

Our Nhs leaflet states that “the timing of a second for 12-17 year olds will be confirmed later”. So clearly now they have confirmed 16-17 year olds and younger is expected to be confirmed “later”.
