3rd dose is not the booster?

yaboreme · 22/10/2021 07:24

Has anyone heard this?

Family member was contacted to book in for the booster, when they got there they were advised that the 3rd vaccine is a top up and not the actual booster which will be given in due course?

They are classed as vulnerable so I understand the reasons for it.

I just hadn't heard anything about a 3rd dose then followed by a booster?

Any advice would be welcome as I'm trying to put their mind at rest.

Thank you

Its the third primary dose for those who may be severely immunocompromised. You don't have to wait 6 months after your second dose. It's probable that a booster dose will be offered 6 months after the 3rd dose.

dementedpixie · 22/10/2021 07:30

I've seen it on other posts on here
Something about a 3rd primary vaccine and then a booster. Dont know what the difference is tbh

dreamingofsun · 22/10/2021 07:51

does anyone know what is happening about third doses? My 6 month deadline was up a few days ago, as was my husbands. Nothing seems to be happening in southern england where we live. Doctors referred me to 119, which has a taped message saying you cant book boosters. The local NHS website says you cant book unless you have already been contacted, or you need to be an NHS worker, which we arent. It all seems to have gone very quiet, with no stats reported on TV either.

dementedpixie · 22/10/2021 07:54

@dreamingofsun have you been told you are getting a 3rd dose rather than a booster?

dementedpixie · 22/10/2021 07:56

I'm in Scotland and my 78 year old mum only just got her booster this week so they aren't very far through the list so far

Chickydoo · 22/10/2021 07:59

My friend had a third dose of vaccine/booster 3 weeks ago (works in a hospital) This morning she tested positive & feels awful. she is in her 30's no underlying conditions but is really poorly. Crossing fingers this is not how the winter is going to pan out

dreamingofsun · 22/10/2021 08:00

Demented - I've not personally been told I'm getting anything. But i thought the protection from the first 2 jabs waned after 6 months and so we were supposed to get another dose. And Javed was telling people to reach out and get theirs.

jab programme was really impressive the first time round, but seems very quiet now. Almost like the NHS has moved onto other things....

dreamingofsun · 22/10/2021 08:03

demented - mine is the booster....sorry ready your link now.

PeterPomegranate · 22/10/2021 08:04

My understanding:

Third dose after a gap of no less than 8 weeks (?) for extremely clinically vulnerable. Whatever vaccine you had for your first two doses. But my friend in this category has only just been offered her third dose.

Boosters after 6 months only for over 50s as well as some occupational and vulnerable groups. Always Pfizer.

dementedpixie · 22/10/2021 08:31

Pfizer or moderna I've read for booster dose

nether · 22/10/2021 08:33

@dementedpixie

Pfizer or moderna I've read for booster dose
For third primary, it is single shot of Pfizer, or single full shot of Moderna

For booster (whether that is your third or fourth dose) it is single shot of Pfizer or a half dose of Moderna.

ChateauMargaux · 22/10/2021 08:39

It's the same vaccine, just recorded as something else on your records. The vaccine is not performing as it was expected to so they are repeating the vaccine to see if it improves outcomes. It's not very reassuring is it?

Not all ECV will be offered 3rd primary ( and then later booster) only those indicated as severely immunocompromised at the time of first 2 boosters.
PeterPomegranate · 22/10/2021 08:51

Ah ok. That certainly applies to my friend.

It doesn't perform as well in immunocompromised people because the body cannot form an adequate immune response to the vaccine. I think it's very reassuring that those in such a position are being offered a third primary dose and a booster six months later.

Not that I'm having any luck arranging mine due to the shambolic way it's been rolled out, but that's another story!

khaleesi71 · 22/10/2021 09:37

I am recently ECV after a lymphoma diagnosis. I have now had a 3rd primary (Pfizer) and will then get a booster. Nurse told me that in the trust they are using Pfizer and that it being different to my first two doses (AZ) is seen as a good thing. I will also then have a booster - the aim is to ensure covid antibodies remain sufficiently high during treatment. It may not stop me getting Covid but it should prevent an overwhelming infection.

If it's the post six months jab you're talking about, I assume you're referring to a booster as opposed to a third primary dose. They're different things. As I understand it you can book your booster online six months and one week after your second primary dose, whether you've been contacted or not.
Mindymomo · 22/10/2021 09:57

Our local facebook page is asking for volunteers to open up vaccine centres that have been closed a couple of months. Many volunteers have gone back to work, so they are very short. For everyone over their 6 months getting a booster, they are going to have to open up a lot more centres to get them done. My DH will be due this Sunday, if he cannot get an appointment, there is only one walk in doing boosters, so he will be going there with ID and proof of last vaccine dates next week.

yaboreme · 22/10/2021 10:45

Thank you everyone, I'm glad it's been done for her she was just feeling anxious as there's nothing in the NHS website. It's reassuring that other people seem to know.

@khaleesi71 thank you, this is exactly the situation, diagnosed with lymphoma in February so as she is vulnerable I'm guessing the 3rd shot is to keep antibodies high until the booster. Also as you are in the same situation have you been advised to have a flu vaccination?

I'm feeling extremely worried about the winter ahead, things seem to be worse now. Feel sad that everyone is in this situation still after all the time. Who knows what's going to happen but hopefully boosters will start to become more available for everyone

vampire - i'll see next week then. at the moment the health authority here is saying you cant book unless you have been approached first by the nhs. it all seems very muddled and not very joined up at the moment, but maybe i'll hear something over the next few days.

khaleesi71 · 22/10/2021 10:50

@yaboreme - yes also he a flu vaccine done. You can have both at the same time. Neither have an effect on each other and are safe for ECV and highly desirable given the current situation.

yaboreme · 22/10/2021 15:32

@khaleesi71 thank you, I'll tell her to get the flu jab too
