Teen DS still struggling post covid

Anyone else with a similar situation?

DS is 16, has always been very fit and active. Competing at regional level in sport but mildly asthmatic. Just for context. Has had vaccine.

Tested positive about a month ago, he was tired, had headaches and a sore throat. Still went to the lessons online that school provided and worked well- his grades for the first part of his A Level courses back this up, as did his parent's evening.

However, he is often in bed by 8.30-9pm and sleeps until 7 am. Sometimes needs a nap after school in order to then do his homework. Sport has been dropped as he simply cannot cope with the training. He can do longer walks now (half an hour maybe, but the 45 minutes home from school would be a problem).

His friends are massively supportive and they are doing things like cinema nights and takeaways at home rather than the outdoor activities and late night gaming that they usually enjoy. (Teen boys can be way more lovely than I had ever given them credit for before I had one myself.)

At what point do we stop with the "you've been quite unwell, you need to give yourself time to recover" and suggest that he may need to see a GP? I think the last time he saw a GP was July 2019!

Oh poor lamb. Yes, take him to the gp, you've nothing to lose.

KittyMcKitty · 21/10/2021 07:38

I would take him to the doctor and get his bloods etc checked.

As a side note tge start of year 12 is absolutely exhausting- I have a child who has just started A levels - her and her friends are absolutely shattered - my older child said they found year 12 the same.

Take him to the gp. They may get the ball rolling with a long Covid clinic. Which hopefully he won't need but takes a long time. By the time my appointment came through I was pretty much better but it was nice to get all the tests.

How is he? Did you talk to GP? I suspect GP will be at a bit of a loss.
Quite similar to my daughter, 13. Also high level sport (tennis) - dizzy when plays now and exhausted after any practice. She going to have to quit it I think. So pale and wan. She’s about 4 weeks post mild covid and all her symptoms are getting worse. Too early to call long covid but it’s worrying me.

At one month after covid with no sign of improvement, I'd definitely take him to the GP to investigate.

Seems like long covid, although I believe symptoms have to go on for 12 weeks for it to be classed as that.

HumunaHey · 24/10/2021 07:10

Also, did he have a period rest when he got covid? From what I've read, not resting can make it last longer.

Thank you all for the responses, he’s agreed to make a GP appointment this week as it’s half term. He had a couple of extra days off school after the 10 days as our GP told us to wait until we had all finished isolating and my DH was the last one to do that.

I’m concerned about long covid as I believe that can be an issue for teens, even those who don’t seem that unwell. He was less unwell than DH and I at the time, but even though I’m tired, I would say I’m more back to where I was pre-Covid than he is.

Yes mine- similar situation, y12, seems to have been ill since starting! Tired and colds, the tested positive with covid 2 weeks ago after a new bout of coughing started before that. He’s still got a terrible cough, going to bed early, started sneezing again today, red eyes, bad skin etc. Seems unending. He also does dance a few times a week.

Adelie0404 · 24/10/2021 09:14

It’s awful isn’t it? Wanting to help and wanting them to get help. Hopefully your son and other children will get better with time…
