Did you know the Coronavirus Act 2020 got extended yesterday?

As the newspapers don't want to report it, I feel the need to.

Last night the Coronavirus Act of 2020 was extended by 6 months in parliament and they didn't even vote on it. In the words of Madam Deputy Speaker:

I am afraid I fear the mood of the House is not to have a vote. The right hon. Gentleman would have to rustle up a few more people to really get the sense that we required a vote—

Seems sensible in the current circumstances.

Sirzy · 20/10/2021 09:06

Would have been daft to do anything else at this point.

underneaththeash · 20/10/2021 09:08

No point in having a vote.

MotherOfDragons27 · 20/10/2021 09:08

What's the problem?

EnjoyingTheArmoire · 20/10/2021 09:10

We are still in the midst of the pandemic so this seems sensible.

meditrina · 20/10/2021 09:13

Yes, this has been approved by Parliament in the nod at every renewal point, and I think the only time it had even the most cursory attention was the first time.

The sunset clause is in six months time, and that's when I expect there will be more debate.

Nothing really it's just Christmas is highly likely to be cancelled again.

If people are vaguely sensible now then nothing will be cancelled.

Nothing will be cancelled anyway. At worst people may be asked to restrict the amount of mixing but that’s not cancelling.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 20/10/2021 09:17

I very much doubt Christmas will be cancelled in any way.

They actually voted on it in March of this year but couldn't be bothered this time. There was a 90 minute debate yesterday but the press can't be bothered to report it either.

Here is the Hansard transcript if anyone is interested to see what just happened to their human rights.

Made a big leap there. Bit scaremongery.

meditrina · 20/10/2021 09:23

I don't think you can read anything in to this.

They've not voted to 'extend' - they've decided not to curtail (Parliament has the right to review every six months) and there was insufficient support for a debate, let alone a vote.

Just out of curiosity, if you don't agree with Parliament's action at this set review point, which of the powers under the Act, that are currently active, do you want to see changed? And which of those, for which there is still legal provision but which are in abeyance, do you think should be ended before they sunset?

Nothing just happened to our human rights.

The Act includes periodic Parliamentary review. That has happened.

If you don't like how Parliament reviewed it, then you need to make your views known to your MP and Ministers (and shadows?) and any relevant House committees.

So how would you like the government to handle things? What would have been gained by voting when it was agreed in parliament that there was no point wasting time voting?

Yesterdays decision has no impact at all on what may or may not happen at Christmas. Although if all measures had been removed it wokld have probably increased the likelihood of emergency measures needing to be reintroduced.

Twounderfive83 · 20/10/2021 09:44

A lot of the powers in this Act were removed in September, including the Government's powers to close schools, pubs, restaurants etc. If they were to reinstate these, MPs WOULD have to vote.

So, don't quite see the problem?

ferneytorro · 20/10/2021 09:50

Yes I know, the bbc reported it yesterday.

frazzledali · 20/10/2021 09:54

yes. I knew. Because... it was reported on. In the media. So you're just a stirring dipshit, aren't you?

Luckytattie · 20/10/2021 09:56

Yes I knew.

Christmas won't be cancelled and last Christmas was pretty normal anyway 🤷

wonkylegs · 20/10/2021 10:00

Yes I knew as it's been fairly widely reported, there's been loads of conspiracy theories circulating on the subject and it's not much of a surprise in the current circumstances.
I know we are all bored of CV19 but that doesn't mean it's gone away or is at a manageable level - unfortunately that's not how these things work as much as we'd like them to.

Tippexy · 29/12/2021 21:27

Nothing really it's just Christmas is highly likely to be cancelled again.

Guess that didn't happen Smile

Not suprised in slightest it will be extended ad infinitum until we say ENOUGH
