COVID vaccination and flu nasal spray at same time?

vaxquestion101 · 19/10/2021 21:21

My DD has been offered the COVID vaccination and flu nasal spray at school on the same day. I have no problem with her having either, but have found no study that looks at the efficacy of these two vaccines when adminstered together (there is a bit of evidence on the flu vaccine, but can't find anything on the nasal spray) or whether side effects are likely to be greater. Does anyone know anything about this, and is ti common to give both together? Thanks.

They certainly gave them together at our school. (Or the flu jab if you're halal.)

I'm sure the experts and the scientists have done the research so you don't have to

I personally prefer separate but I know lots having combined including helath staff so assume they think its safe.

Hi. Thanks for your responses. There seems to be evidence it’s ok to have flu injection and covid vaccination together but absolutely no mention anywhere of nasal spray which is quite different. Just seems strange no-one has raised this?

I’m just really surprised they don’t even mention it in any of the blurb we’ve been sent. They’ve bee treated as two separate events with no acknowledgement they’re happening on the same day. I’m keen for her to get the covid vax ASAP as cases so high but does anyone know if she can have the flu nasal spray at the Gp at a later date?

You’d have to ask your GP that question, it depends if they will spare an appointment for something that could have been done in school, and if they’ve got enough. The GP’s only tend to order enough for the 2-4’s.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 20/10/2021 07:40

My DD had both on the same day no issues. If you want you can pay for her to have a private flu vaccine but it will be a jab not a nasal spray. They tend to cost between £8-15 so not hugely expensive.

We had a letter from school yesterday confirming that it is perfectly fine to give nasal spray and covid jab on the same day.

vaxquestion101 · 20/10/2021 07:53

Good point Ceecee - thanks. Don’t mind paying ( but not sure she’ll be thrilled to have the jab rather than the spray!).

I took my DS’s to boots for flu vaccine, admittedly it was the injection not the nasal spray rather than them having both at school, but didn’t have to pay

vaxquestion101 · 20/10/2021 07:56

Thanks Milk - did it mention vaccine efficacy or link to and research? We had nothing other than a “nothing to do with us” disclaimer from the school.

Was there a contact number on the school letter for the Immunisation team that will be giving the vaccines? Give them a call. They will be more than happy to discuss it with you.

Seriously79 · 20/10/2021 08:17

My DS had both at the same time about 3 weeks ago, and he's been absolutely fine.

vaxquestion101 · 20/10/2021 10:38

Thanks - I'm more worried about any impact on vaccine efficacy of them both together than any particular side effects (there are certainly instances when concurrent administration of vaccines has had an impact on efficacy).
