Why are people protesting against lockdown when we’re not in lockdown?

Michael Gove threatened by anti-lockdown protestors

I just don’t understand. There are no restrictions now on where you can travel within England (other home nations may be different, haven’t followed), how many people can gather etc. We are not in lockdown. So why are people protesting against lockdown?

They have the same mentality as the protesters that protest against a vaccine, which nobody is forcing them to take in the first place I guess 🤔

beentoldcomputersaysno · 19/10/2021 17:24

No idea! Could it be something to do with extending the timescales of coronavirus act? Thought lockdowns sat outside of that act though?

Topseyt · 19/10/2021 17:25

They are just arses, and not very bright.

wonkylegs · 19/10/2021 17:36

The person I know who has been protesting I think just likes to protest and hates to be told what to do (even when nobody is actually doing that). I've come to the conclusion she just likes to be contrary and different, and is determined that nobody but she knows what's going on in the world - this predated Covid but has got worse. DH just thinks she's an arse.

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 19/10/2021 17:39

Probably just wanted a day out.

Geamhradh · 19/10/2021 17:43

Because they're loons b

TheKeatingFive · 19/10/2021 17:45

I remember people protesting against the vaccines before any had been authorised 😆

confuseddotcom090 · 19/10/2021 17:49

Maybe they're worried about another lockdown? That seems a legit worry to me, if you cannot work as a result

Yep, this.

And maybe wanting the government to be held to account for the damage lockdowns caused.

But yeah, just call them idiots etc because they disagree with something.

lydia2577 · 19/10/2021 17:57

@XenoBitch......exactly that 👏

confuseddotcom090 · 19/10/2021 18:00

The inability to empathise with others exhibited on this site fills me with despair for our society

Invasionofthegutsnatchers · 19/10/2021 18:03

I think another lockdown is very unlikely. We will all get covid eventually. If people choose not to get vaccinated that's their choice. Hope they don't complain if they get really ill though

I do understand that a small minority can't have the vaccine and I sympathise with them.

herecomesthsun · 19/10/2021 18:04

Are we supposed to be sympathetic towards " [a large] crowd gathered, chanting and shouting at the minister.

... just days after the home secretary promised to review MPs' security in the wake of the fatal stabbing of Sir David Amess."

Or are we supposed to sympathise with Michael Gove?

Confused
User135644 · 19/10/2021 18:13

The most vocal anti-lockdown brigade are typically anti-vax and it's the anti-vax sentiment that will have us back in lockdown (just look at the take up with teenagers).

Only if we allow it to spread needlessly.

It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.

InFrontBy · 19/10/2021 18:17

I'd say they were twats. But admittedly, my tolerance for ''protesters' of whatever persuasion is rapidly running short.

lydia2577 · 19/10/2021 18:33

@confuseddotcom090 agreed!! I'm not anti-vax, anti-mask or even anti anything really but the affect these lockdowns have had on people's mental health has been devastating. Sad truth is I know more people that have taken their own lives due to the lockdowns and the lack of help and support available than I do that have died of Covid, including my best friends 17 year old son. Sorry if there are people on this thread that have sadly lost people due to covid, this is just my own experience, and I have seen first hand, in more ways than one, how devastating the lack of help and support has been for alot of people, myself included.

Geamhradh · 19/10/2021 19:03

I don't disagree about the MH issues. It's ku now that my DD is back full time in school (not UK) after almost 18 solid months of online lessons that I now recognise her again. I teach 300 kids and they knuckled down, did what we asked them to do and didn't complain. But it broke them.

I guess they couldn't protest during a lockdown? But they don't want another one.

I was going to type "maladaptive coping strategies" but yours is better.

I thought the isse with vaccinating teens was to do with practicalities rather than them being ant vax. Is that what you're referring to? Is there research on their attitudes to the jab?
lydia2577 · 19/10/2021 19:56

@Geamhradh wow, that sounds tough....but I hear you. My DD has autism and will pretty much only willingly leave the house to go to school and in all honesty, I'm still very much seeing the affects the lockdown has had on her, both physically and mentally 😔
