Anyone caught COVID again within one month

Ds had covid from 9-19th sept. He was fairly floored and still a bit lethargic after school/ falling asleep 6 pm etc. We’ve just been away and we were out yesterday and he said he wasn’t feeling well again . Said he felt foggy and sore ears. Thought he was faking but he had a temperature again last night. Obviously less than 3 months since last PCR. Do you think this could be something else or Covid again?

The only way to know is to test, of course.

I hope he feels better soon.

Except that the PCR could still show a positive result from the first infection, which is why it's not recommended to do another within 90 days.
HesterShaw1 · 17/10/2021 11:38

The fatigue can last longer than that.

It will show up as positive from the initial illness.

Other viruses are available

WhatMattersMost · 17/10/2021 12:11

True, @Faircastle. Then it's probably impossible to know, but highly unlikely, imo.

TimeForLunch · 17/10/2021 12:23

Can you do a lateral flow test? DD was had mild symptoms and tested very strongly positive on LFTs (confirmed by PCR) and then was negative on LFT a few days later.

DILevil · 17/10/2021 12:25

Long covid affects children as well sadly, and can course long term temperature changes/fatigue/so many awful complications. More likely to occur in the unvaccinated (aka children).

Do a test, you’ve got nothing to lose. There are lots of long covid children groups sadly.

pullingmyhairout2 · 17/10/2021 12:31

I would definitely do a lateral flow. Both my children tested negative after 9 days after having covid on a lateral flow. And my son had a PCR less than 90 days after he had it as his sister tested positive and that was negative. I know lots of people think they are unreliable but they have picked up both my children's covid very early on.

Tinysnickers · 17/10/2021 12:52

You could do a LF. That won't show positive from a previous infection.

Mindymomo · 17/10/2021 12:52

There is really no point to get tested as he’s still within 90 days of his original positive test, so he won’t be eligible for a PCR test. It’s possible that it’s something viral he’s picked up as his immunity is probably quite low. Or could be ear infection if he has a temperature. GP should see him if you are worried.

Warhertisuff · 17/10/2021 13:19

Highly unlikely... It you are positive it is almost certainly the infection you contracted a month ago

pommedeterre · 17/10/2021 13:24

You shouldn't be testing him again that soon according to the guidelines.

SusannahHolmes · 17/10/2021 13:25

My DD had random temperatures for 24-48 hours at 2 weeks and 6 weeks after covid. Been okay since (touch wood).

Coronado2 · 17/10/2021 13:26

Isn't it don't do another test within 90 days UNLESS you get new symptoms?

Coronado2 · 17/10/2021 13:27

Obviously there are loads of things that make you feel rubbish and give you a high temperature though

Kb2942 · 17/10/2021 13:49

The problem is if you test and it's positive it could be just positive after last infection. It's unlikely to be covid twice in a month I believe. There is so many other things going around and covid may have made his immune system temporarily weaker and more likely to catch something else.

I believe my children had covid last year (just before lockdown 2020 and before tests were readily available!). After they got over the period in what I think is covid, within a month they also caught a sickness bug and a nasty cold, just kept getting ill over and over (they are generally pretty healthy kids). They literally were off school on and off for a month! I remember ringing the school saying it's like their immune system is weak after the first period of illness (they were very unwell). Anyway, they quickly bounced back and have been totally fine since then! It didn't last long!

Plus there is all sorts of other viruses going around now after 18 months of reduced socialising, masks, sanitising etc.

Faircastle · 17/10/2021 13:51

There's no point in him doing a lateral flow test: (a) they are intended for those without symptoms and (b) you aren't supposed to take a LFT for 90 days after confirmed Covid.

The NHS domestic Covid pass has an option for natural immunity which is valid for 6 months after confirmed Covid infection. His new symptoms are almost certainly from a different virus.

Covidworries · 17/10/2021 14:04

Keep an eye on his ears. There has been an increase of sudden ear problems after covid. Tinitus, vertigo, sudden hearing loss.

If he loses his hearing get him check out as this can need steriods to reduce the risk loss being permanent

Mossstitch · 17/10/2021 16:37

I had long covid for most of last year, if I exerted myself symptoms returned just as if I was starting again. One of my sons also had recurring symptoms like that (but much milder) just sore throat, temp and fatigue with him. Had to stop off work twice in couple of months post original infection (when he had been off sick for three weeks). Maybe he is just over tired from going away, let him rest for a couple of days and see if he feels better.
