Wearing a mask when you’ve had covid

I’ve a couple of friends who are still stoically wearing a mask in shops etc despite having had covid in the last couple of months. Is there actually any point in doing this considering how unlikely it is they’re going to catch COVID again for a good while.

Don't know, interested to hear responses. I suppose there is the benefit of not catching/spreading other viruses. It's also a social norm isnt it.

Geamhradh · 16/10/2021 11:48

Well, the juries are still out as to:

Are you immune after infection? (Nobody knows
If so, for how long
Can you still catch Covid if you've had it
Can you still spread it
Can you catch it again
If so how soon

So yes. You should still be wearing one

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/10/2021 11:48

If they want to still masks, why not.

vodkaredbullgirl · 16/10/2021 11:49

mean't to add wear.

thedevilinablackdress · 16/10/2021 11:49

It helps everyone else around them to feel comfortable. Masks are about protecting other people as well as yourself. And no-one knows who has got or has had Covid.

TheQueef · 16/10/2021 11:51

Why not wear one, there's no argument against wearing one and many for wearing a mask after a serious respiratory illness (avoiding other bugs) so imo it's sensible.

Obakarama · 16/10/2021 18:06

I am in France. Rates here are really low. Everyone, I mean everyone, is wearing masks. Maybe there is a connection. But specifically, why do the English keep being selfish? You cannot be 100percent certain you are not transmitting.

RedMarauder · 16/10/2021 18:09

I know 2 people who have had Covid twice.

So yes there is a point in wearing one especially as most masks protect other people rather than yourself.

Also wearing a mask helps protects from coughs and colds.

AliceinBorderland · 16/10/2021 18:12

Infection rates are really high in Scotland where masks are still mandatory.

It's about passing it on, rather than getting it again.
From what I understand, you can possibly pick it up again during the 'safer' period after having covid, and because you've got high antibodies then they battle it quickly and it doesn't get established. But perhaps during those few hours or a day or whatever you might be able to spread it?

I don't know but our family are still wearing masks just in case, even though we're double jabbed, and the unvaccinated children had covid a few weeks ago now. It feels the right thing to do if we're not sure. For the sake of putting a mask on in a shop, it's peace of mind that you know you're extremely unlikely to give anything to anyone else, you'll probably then get fewer coughs and colds yourself, which aren't fun.
I honestly don't get why more people aren't wearing them here. I went into a shop the other day with free surgical-type masks at the doorway, and still people just sailed past them without putting them on.
If someone has a mask on then you know that they're being careful and that they care. And if they don't, you don't know if they've had covid recently and feel they won't spread it, or if they're some antivaxxer who might not be careful or who might have it.

Yes, but according to the ONS, yesterday 1 in 60 people in England had it, and just 1 in 80 in Scotland. 1 in 80's not great, but every few extra cases avoided means fewer serious illnesses and fewer deaths.

I wàs at a gathering yesterday of a group of us who have been meeting outdoors. For the first time it is arranged that we meet inside at a pub/restaurant. I wore a mask. Not a single other one of them did - I don't know what's the matter with them!

RuggerHug · 16/10/2021 18:26

Look at where you are and look at everywhere that has people wearing masks.
