PCR problem finally acknowledged

Looks like the positive LFT negative PCR problem has finally been acknowledged. Not great for all those kids who went back to school having received a negative result after a positive LFT.

"If you took a PCR test between 3 and 12 October which was negative, we strongly recommend a retest for you and for any close contacts."

It's about time they acknowledged there's an issue. But it's too little too late for all those who had to go back to work / school as they recieved a negative result.

I wonder what additional details will be released today.

Is there any point in those taken early on testing ? I’m not sure how soon you’d become negative.
And how many people are going to want to isolate now.

Barwell76 · 15/10/2021 07:31

This is my local test centre. Cases in my dcs secondary school have rocketed in the last few days, maybe this is why.

According to the Fail -
The false negatives were reportedly caused by one lab - rather than the site - and are now fixed.

'The DHSC has now confirmed that a number of sites nationally may have been affected by this issue, including the one at Newbury Showground.'

I wonder how many test sites send their samples to that lab? The amount of people recieving false nagatives could be enormous.

negatives

Goodness me i'd love an edit button Grin

TroubleInSnowland · 15/10/2021 08:09

They’ve also failed to acknowledge that this was happening in September. We went against 119 advice and kept our LFT positive child home from school but I know many others who sent them back. At the time there was a handful of similar cases and just on 1 year group. Now the whole school is affected with numbers rocketing.

Louiselady500 · 15/10/2021 08:14

I know of so many people here in South West that had positive lateral flow but negative PCR and have gone back to work/school. The numbers are going to be huge.

RedRiverShore · 15/10/2021 08:21

How big are these labs and how many people do they serve

Don’t tell the data threads. There were smug cries on anecdotal and don’t be surprised when they find nothing is wrong. Hmm

Its the flu rebounding and the super cold

🙄

It's highly dodgy and totally predictable that they denied and denied until the problem became so big it was impossible to ignore. That's been this government's approach to covid all along.

And yesterday on the way in to pick up DD1 from school in the car there was a news reports on how overwhelmed A&Es are up and down the country with waiting times over 4 hours for the majority and then huge waits for a bed even once admitted. Chris Whitty's said we're in for a hard winter. But somehow everyone's ignoring this and just not bothering with basic measures to prevent spread of diseases. It must be utterly miserable to work in the NHS right now.

I'm sure all these people merrily spreading covid because they got a false negative PCR won't have helped the pressure on the NHS. No-one will take responsibility though.

That's why I don't read the data threads any more.

When the likes of Prof Pagel and Dr Yates are saying they think there might be something wrong.....

theemperorhasnoclothes · 15/10/2021 09:44

I hope this isn't deliberate, but I worry it might be. I think given how awful our numbers are relative to similar countries (because we have no measures and even the vaccination of 12-15s is going very poorly) there might be a Trumpian push to just not have any numbers.......

But what everyone seems to be missing is that while it's not going to be as bad in terms of covid, the combination of other pressures and high covid numbers could still overwhelm the NHS. It sounds perilously close to collapse as it is. You can't pretend there aren't a huge line of ambulances waiting outside A&E (unless you get rid of the ambulances....oh wait....)

HereticFanjo · 15/10/2021 09:46

I'm actually surprised they admitted it rather than trying to cover it up. It was obvious a fuck up had happened, on another thread people were saying medical staff were telling people to go by the LFT result not the PCR one but the problem was people couldn't self-isolate from work with the LFT result.

I wonder how many 'super cold' victims had covid. If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck...
