Looking for some positive stories about Covid recovery.

I'm on about day 10 of Covid. I've been very unwell, but I'm now beginning to feel better. However, I've been left tired, anxious and generally depleted. I'm also really missing my sense of smell. I'd love to hear some positive stories of people who were unwell and then got better, as I'm thinking it could cheer me and other sufferers up. In particular, when did your smell return? What helped you? What was a realistic recovery timeline? Thank you.

Me!
I was very ill with covid in August, spent a week in hospital and was still pretty unwell 4 weeks later. Took 8 weeks but I am fully recovered and very, very grateful.

quirkychick · 14/10/2021 12:22

Following too, as I'm also on day 10. I feel very tired, mostly, but have had cold symptoms otherwise and have an occasional cough (watching that carefully, as I'm asthmatic).

Endeavormorse · 14/10/2021 12:41

I tested positive 3 weeks ago and was quite ill until last weekend. My energy has almost fully returned, smell and taste took about 2 weeks to come back. My nose is still blocked, I’m using vicks sinex to clear it.
I’d say I’m 90% recovered.
You just need to give it time but also you need to move about a bit. Try for a short walk to build up your strength.
I’m 50 and was double vaccinated.

PuzzledObserver · 14/10/2021 12:47

I didn’t lose taste or smell, just had cough, fatigue and a bit of diarrhoea for a few days.

The main issue for me was the fatigue. It continued unchanged for 2 weeks, then it was as if someone flicked a switch and I went into “getting better mode.” Thereafter, I had a bit more energy each day. Took another 3 weeks till I felt fully recovered.

TinaYouFatLard · 14/10/2021 12:49

Me!
Wasn’t well. Got better. There are millions and million and millions of us.
HTH.

Great thread. I'm on Day 9 so following with interest. Feeling much better overall but still have no smell and I'm exhausted!

MareofBeasttown · 14/10/2021 12:55

My sister's 82 yr old inlaws recovered just fine. As did my 95 yr old gran last year. Sense of smell gradually returns after a while.

If you can, do walk abt a bit, preferably in some sunshine.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 14/10/2021 14:43

I felt dreadful for about 2 weeks with nausea, headache and dizziness and then as a pp said it was as if a switch was flicked and I just started feeling better every day. My sense of smell is only coming back slowly and I'm still a little dizzy when I stand up suddenly but taste is now fine and the awful cough only lasted about 5 days. I'd say 4 weeks after the first symptoms I feel 95% back to normal.

Lynne1Cat · 14/10/2021 14:55

I got Covid in July, was on a ventilator for 2 weeks (I got Pneumonia at the same time, then had a stroke, all whilst unconscious. I was in hospital for 6 weeks in total, had to learn to sit, walk, dress myself, everything. Been home 7 weeks now, and today managed to walk a mile into town, for the first time.

WorryMcGee · 14/10/2021 15:22

I had it last year - sense of smell/taste came back in full after about a month, I was back out running a fortnight after first feeling rotten (albeit slower than usual for a bit due to lingering cough) and I’m totally fine now. Even ran the London Marathon in a half decent time while 10 and a bit weeks pregnant! Get well soon and try not to worry to much (says the woman with worry in her username Wink )

Crikey @Lynne1Cat - sending best wishes - glad you are on the mend. What a shocking experience this must have been for you.
quirkychick · 14/10/2021 16:34

@Lynne1Cat Flowers for you, I'm glad you're starting to feel better. Our neighbour was hospitalised with pneumonia, too.

Blimey, reading a few of these replies I'm not sure some people understand the meaning of 'positive recovery story'.

OP if you were hoping just to be told you'd be feeling much better soon I think you've come to the wrong place !!

Doremisofarsogood · 14/10/2021 18:26

DH and I had it back in March, both fully recovered although my sense of smell is still a but skewed. You do feel like you'll never be well again, bur you slowly get there. Move around as much as you can, eat and drink well. Wine helped me, well it did till I went off it!

ConadSmith · 14/10/2021 18:36

@PingusLittleSister I don’t know, last year it was seen like plague, if you touched a footpath gate you were going to kill someone. Everyone on here is basically saying they are much better if not fully recovered.

To be fair though, no one can tll another person they'll be better soon

I'm sure the OP knows that, I heard today that the deaths are now over 130000 I'm sure some of them were told they'd be fine

Clearly the overwhelming statistics show that nearly everyone fully recovers, there's a fact to cheer you up Smile

Bookridden · 14/10/2021 19:15

These stories are really helpful. I can't wait till that "switch" is flicked for me too. I've been feverish for over a week, unable to eat for about a week, and the exhaustion is something else. Not surprisingly, mood is much affected. It's wonderful to hear those of you who've been very ill or in hospital and yet a month later are well in the road to recovery.

@CatAlice - I'm so pleased you are feeling better. Do you mind me asking what treatment you had? Also, how have you coped mentally ith the trauma of being so ill? This is a big problem for me.

@Endeavormorse and @TinaYouFatLard thank you! I need this sort of optimism to help my recovery.

@Lynne1Cat you sound like a real survivor. Flowers So good to hear you are on the road to recovery. Do you anticipate making a full recovery?

I was very ill in hospital for 10 nights with covid and pneumonia in August. I was on oxygen for most of the time and thankfully didn't need to go to ICU. Taste is pretty much back to normal now but although i can smell most things I can also smell smoke alot of the time, weird! I survived and thankful to be here

Onegingerhead · 14/10/2021 22:01

Had COVID in August, wasn’t particularly ill with it. Sore throat, blocked nose, bit of diarrhoea and lost my sense of smell for 5 days. No fever, no cough, no tight chest and breathlessness.
Had some pins and needles for another 10 days and that was it.

Lynne1Cat · 14/10/2021 22:57

Bookridden. Thank you. Yes, I've pushed myself to get back to normal. I'd say I'm probably 90 % back to how I was. The stroke I had was quite rare, apparently, called a bilateral stroke (affects both sides of the brain) so luckily I haven't got the more-often seen dragging/weakness of one arm and leg.

I WILL make a full recovery, I'm determined. The ONLY thing I can't yet do (Physiotherapist advised against) is drive, but only because my attention isn't so good. I've got to pass an assessment (driving test)in November - then I'll look for work.

Lynne1Cat · 14/10/2021 22:59

CloudPop and QuirkyChick - thank you. Yes, it was terrifying but I'm almost back to normal. I've been determined and I've struggled to push myself a bit more each day and week.

FakeFruitShoot · 14/10/2021 23:01

I tested positive on 19th September. I am still tired but managing about 17000 steps a day since last week. I was not very ill, but was surprised by the tiredness and the brain fog. Like PP says, it was suddenly like a switch flicked and I started feeling better day by day - almost hour by hour tbh. I would say I'm about 80% recovered and I am at a level of wellness that my day to day life would deal with easily.
