How likely is it that DD doesn't have Covid

DD is 16. On Sat she went out with a group of 9 friends to celebrate a birthday. It was an outdoor activity type thing. She got a lift with friends there and they all caught the train home.

All 9 of the friends have now tested positive. All of them. We assumed DD would also have it but...nothing. She did 2 tests on Tuesday (morning and evening) when the first positive case (her boyfriend!!!) was known. 2 tests on Wed when everyone else including her best friend tested positive. I made her do one this morning right before school. Still negative. We were late for school due to me making her test so I emailed her form tutor explaining why. He was a bit concerned and so asked if she'd mind having a test done by the school nurse. STILL NEGATIVE.
Shes in year 11 coming up to half term. I'd feel terrible if I'm sending her in and she has it as it could ruin people's half term, but I don't want her missing 10 days of GCSE schooling (when she's missed so much already) if she doesn't have it.

6 negative tests. How long does it take to incubate?

Have you done an actual pcr test in that time or all lvt ?

SheWoreYellow · 14/10/2021 09:52

Up to ten days, hence the previous ten days for isolation.
Most people test positive from day five.

BunnytheFriendlyDragon · 14/10/2021 09:53

Has she done a PCR test?

worriedatthemoment · 14/10/2021 09:53

Although my son was with a case a couple weeks ago and he never got it
On saying that though today we have a positive lvt test, taking him for a pcr to confirm. But likey not from the case he was with as that was 16 days ago . Unless other tests have missed it as he has no tests

BlueFlavour · 14/10/2021 09:53

I’d do a pcr tbh. Dd took TEN lateral flow tests, all negative. She did have covid.

dementedpixie · 14/10/2021 09:55

She should do a PCR. LFT have a high false negative rate especially in the absence of symptoms

Just LFT. I thought you had to have symptoms to get a pcr but I've just read that you can have it if you've been in contact with a positive person so I've ordered a test (no slots available)

Maybe she had covid already (asymptomatic).

5 days - that's interesting. She's the only one who goes to a different school so looking at the timeline for her boyfriend it's likely they all caught it at school not on Sat. However it's now 5 days Coe her since exposure so I think a pcr test is warranted.

Typically 4-6 days, range 2-14. Very, very few outliers beyind that

TEN! I was assuming a 10-20% margin of error but obviously not. She has no symptoms.

Yes 10!!
She didn’t have symptoms when she took them.
Book in a pcr and good luck.

BlueFlavour · 14/10/2021 10:04

She’s 19 btw

I think that is a really good point. It's been utterly rife in her school. Her form class is 16 and 7 of them had it a few weeks ago. However we tested daily and nothing so the school told her to keep coming in. It sort of made sense as this was just her form class and she was often with different children during lessons, and none of her close friends got it. However I'm certain that she'll have been extremely close to her boyfriend (!) so unless she's already had it it makes no sense.

You can request a PCR as a contact of a positive case.

Kb2942 · 14/10/2021 11:57

I assume you are using lateral flows. Get a pcr test please as that is recommended for close contacts!

Frazzled2207 · 14/10/2021 14:37

Id get the PCR sorted. But it is totally possible to live with someone and not distance yourself and not get it. So I could believe that she was the lucky one that got away.

Although for most teenagers I imagine at this point it's possibly preferable to just get it then you worry less about getting it when it's exam time.

BoofTheFloof · 16/10/2021 15:48

So... her PCR is negative as well. I can only assume that having spent a whole Sat draped over her covid positive boyfriend that she must have immunity, possibly because she's had it asymptotically recently.

However, me, her dad and brother have just all just tested positive (none of us have any symptoms and I only tested because we'd been in close proximity to DD).

My DH has just suggested (half jokingly) that DD is some kind of Typhoid Mary. I've ordered another PCR test for her which should come on Monday.

Typhoid Mary Grin poor love! Bless her she's a medical wonder. Like you say she probably had it asympomatically recently.

Hope you all recover swiftly. I spent yesterday eve/night in A&E Covid resus, not great. I have the 'other' flu virus going around and was having breathing issues.

QueenofLouisiana · 16/10/2021 17:14

If she’d had it recently she’d still test positive on a PCR so possibly had it several months ago (you are likely to test PCR positive for a few months- hence the Covid recovery pass).
DS (negative on all LFTs, positive on PCR after I tested positive) only passed it onto his girlfriend. He’d spent hours in mates’ rooms as they did homework etc.
Hope you all recovery swiftly.
