How transmissible is it though?

I'm pretty stumped and can't be the only one.
To clarify I'm double vaccinated. Was CEV (end stage renal failure and high blood pressure, using immune suppression during pandemic) and shielded for the full advised time. Didn't visit a shop ect for over a year. Was absolutely terrified for my life. My mental health was terrible.
Eventually my children returned to school in April this year and now they have started high school in September. Both year 7. I accepted the risk so my family could carry on with life. That was important. I've still continued to be careful with my contacts though.
Covid is rife in their school and last Wednesday my son started coughing when he woke up, tested positive on an LFT and later that day on a PCR. It wasn't a surprise, he was exposed on the Wednesday a week before on the school bus to 2 children who then tested positive a day later on the Thursday. (My son wasn't at school on the Monday and Tuesday before he tested positive, as we were isolating as a full household so my other son could be admitted to hospital for an operation, it's important to note we all tested negative last weekend for this purpose)
My son is so loving and cuddly I couldn't bring myself to isolate from him over the past week regardless of him being 11, he's been under the weather and needed his mum. ❤️
However, I have to genuinely ask something.
After kissing, hugging, watching films on the sofa, sat next to him doing school work ect for the past week. Playing Lego games together on the Xbox. At one point I even forgot myself and took a swig of his drink 🤦
Why if it's so transmissible haven't my husband, other son or myself caught it? I've spent every day so far waiting for it, sure it would get us.
LFTs every day and PCR tests this gone Saturday for the rest of us have been negative. Bar myself who actually had a 'could not be read' result, so have had to take another and I'm still waiting on the results! We are on day 7 of isolation for him.
My son spent a 15 minute bus journey sat next to 2 kids and caught it. Yet I've been with him non stop 15 hours a day for 11 days and nothing.
My other son is back at school now after his operation and having a negative PCR this weekend. We are still doing LFTs for us all daily. Therefore there is a good chance my other son will catch it from other kids who are still spreading it about at school. Maybe we'll catch it then?!
I've had a sore throat for days now, no positive tests, trust me I know I'm doing them right! I've done enough of the blinking things to be an expert 🤣
It can't be just me that's been confused by this corona?

Both my DDs had it the same time. I never tested positive on a LFT or had any obvious symptoms (but did feel rough and groggy a few days before they did).

We don't know if one gave it to the other or they both got it independently at school, since there were cases in both their classes before them. DD1 never showed any symptoms, DD2 just had a headache.

It just seems random

Iggly · 12/10/2021 12:24

You’ve been double vaccinated so you’re less likely to catch it….

User5827372728 · 12/10/2021 12:24

You’re double vaccinated, all the kids on the bus aren’t

Tigerwhocameforsupper · 12/10/2021 12:26

I think viral load has a lot to do with it. You son will have been exposed to those 2 people, but also possibly another 10-20 asymptomatic people at school during the day.

Whereas you have only been exposed to him.

I’ve just tested positive. Almost certain I caught it from a class of students at school where multiple tested positive 2-3 days after I taught them.

Iggly · 12/10/2021 12:26

OP, with all due respect it sounds like you’re trying to cast doubt on just how contagious this is. It is contagious which is why we’ve got vaccines and need vaccines.

Your vaccines are doing their job.

AFuturisticalSound · 12/10/2021 12:30

I'm surprised that you are surprised tbh, surely the one thing we know for sure is that the virus isn't predictable and you can't assume anything but I don't think anyone ever said it has bubonic plague like transmission. R has been under 1 for quite a bit of the time and many studies have shown that intra household transmission is around 50%.

It is what it is, trying to apply logic or base what happens to any one individual on what happened to another is a waste of time. Take what ever precautions are right for you and get on with life

bigbluebus · 12/10/2021 12:35

I know of 2 households (one a close relative, the other a close friend) where adult children living in the household caught Covid and in both cases the parents all tested positive 12 days later. They had all isolated for 10 days (pre the rule change) and had no contact with anyone outside of the household on day 11 & 12 - having tested negative on day 9 or 10. 3 of the 4 parents were double jabbed and didn't have anywhere near as much contact with their offspring as you've had!

So I'd say there's time yet OP.

Tiredmumofboys · 12/10/2021 12:40

Not trying to cast doubt at all! 🤣 Not a conspiracy theorist if that's what you are thinking. I'm a regular educated person who understands the use of vaccines. I also know the vaccine isn't designed to stop people catching the illness but to reduce the effects of it.
My husband is only single vaccinated due to the first one causing an awful reaction and flare up of his preexisting health issue.
My other son has chronic asthma and a bowel disease and isn't vaccinated.
I'm genuinely curious how it's happened that other double jabbed individuals have caught it and I haven't.
My neighbours daughter goes to school with my son and tested positive on the same morning. Her whole family has got it now and all double jabbed.

I'm on day 9 of isolating. First dd was infected, then double jabbed dh 3 days later, then me 7 days after dd so I have no doubt how transmissible it is. Luckily ds has remained negative but tbf he barely left his room. Hopefully you don't catch it op but you're not out of the woods yet

Tiredmumofboys · 12/10/2021 12:41

Wow @bigbluebus thats a mighty long period of time in between first and subsequent infections!
I'll be mindful of that thank you for your input!

thedevilinablackdress · 12/10/2021 12:42

Because not everyone reacts the same, or has the same experience as other people.

Tiredmumofboys · 12/10/2021 12:43

@MegaClutterSlut thanks for sharing your experience. It's obvious even now at day 7 I shouldn't be so sure we aren't going to get it then!

I'm double jabbed. I got covid 2 weeks ago. Dd and Dh didn't get it from me. I didn't isolate myself from them. Dd went to school every day where covid is rife.

ILookAtTheFloor · 12/10/2021 13:03

In all honesty, I think there is an awful lot that science doesn't know about transmission.

It's not as clear as exposed= you'll get infected. Much like flu. There is a theory that for every variant 15% of the population is susceptible at any one time, for one reason or another.

This is typical of the situations I’ve seen with my friends. Day 12 for first symptoms/positive tests in quite a few cases. Not much comfort to me. We’re on day 3 with ds1 and the rest of us are still testing negative.
Tiredmumofboys · 12/10/2021 13:59

@ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife fingers crossed for your household. It's an anxious time. You tell yourself what will be, will be. But in reality every throat tickle or ache sparked a dreaded feeling and I was extremely anxious.
I know as people say there isn't a pattern, but hearing other people's experiences give me a sense of guidance, even if it doesn't reflect what will happen for us.

JKDinomum · 12/10/2021 14:18

It is mysterious. My daughter and I caught it in summer. Must have been from a random encounter as nobody we know had it. And my younger two kids went to all the same places as us in the two weeks beforehand and didn't catch it. During the 10 days we were infectious, the two younger kids, and my DH were living in close proximity with us, I was cooking their food and sharing a bed with DH. None of them caught it from us (daily negative tests)!

idontlikealdi · 12/10/2021 14:52

One dt had it one dt did, DH and I both double vaccinated had it too. I'm convinced dt2 was a false negative. We were all asymptotic and in a caravan on holiday.

Sandyjag · 12/10/2021 15:06

A colleague of my brother accidentally flicked the contests of a tube that had been in a covid patients lung into their face and mouth and didn’t catch it. Individual cases are unpredictable. But on the whole it’s very contagious.

thedevilinablackdress · 12/10/2021 15:30

Don't forget that about a third of cases are asymptomatic

Theunamedcat · 12/10/2021 15:37

Its the same as chicken pox ds1 caught chicken pox from school I assumed ds2 would get it as they bathed together mostly shared a bed together swapped food and were quite frankly gross around each other so I didn't try and keep them apart thinking its just a matter of time...ds 2 didn't get it so I sent them both back to school (when ds1 was allowed back in) thinking he had missed it and nursery were confident he had missed it too around three days after they went back to school he came down with chicken pox

🤷‍♀️

I had a cough and felt crap for a couple of days @GreyhoundG1rl.
but it's the breathlessness that doesn't seem to be getting any better.

You have been exposed. Your body has fought it off before it’s been able to replicate enough to lake you ill or to show on any tests but you will have been exposed.
Combo of vaccines and your immune system being stronger than you gave it credit for
