My friend said that it's not actually law that you have to isolate if you've got covid... Is this true?

Not true. If you have a positive covid test definitely a legal obligation to self isolate .

purpleme12 · 12/10/2021 01:49

That's what I thought
Apparently they've done their research and was telling the track and trace person it's not actually illegal to not isolate

Just wondered where they got this from

Someone on the internet probably

Barkingdog · 12/10/2021 02:18

It is a criminal offence not to self isolate if you are required to. You can be fined £1000 for your first offence.

purpleme12 · 12/10/2021 02:22

I think his wife believes he might be right too, although she doesn't question like he does
I just thought there must be some kind of credible source out there if he's convinced of it
I don't believe everything like this but I'm not very good at backing up my points with things like this

It’s definitely law, it says on gov.uk/coronavirus website, tell your friend to look there. Also I’m sure Test and Trace told them the same and they would have received texts and emails stating this.

purpleme12 · 12/10/2021 07:22

Yes they did on the phone
But they told them they're wrong

Always a man who has “done his research” isn’t it Hmm

toomuchlaundry · 12/10/2021 07:28

Are they vaccinated? Do they believe in COVID?

StealthPolarBear · 12/10/2021 07:29

The app pinging you doesnt legally oblige you. I wonder if he's got muddled up.

purpleme12 · 12/10/2021 07:29

No they're not. But he does believe in it
I don't get it all. But I think because he says all this, his wife kind of believes it too although she's vaccinated

Well given that they've basically now told Test and Trace they're not isolating, I do hope they send someone round to check 😁

IsabellesMissingSock · 12/10/2021 07:36

Whilst you do have to isolate when you have it, I have a feeling that it's technically only an offence if you break isolation when you have a reason to believe you will have close contact with someone, and then go on to have said close contact. I think I read that in the relevant legislation when I had covid over the summer. I'll see if I can find the section.
Perhaps that's what this person is referring to.

IsabellesMissingSock · 12/10/2021 07:45

www.cps.gov.uk/legal-guidance/coronavirus-self-isolation-regulations

Regulation 11. I guess someone seeking to avoid being fined for breaking isolation would seek to interpret "reasonable excuse" broadly.

purpleme12 · 12/10/2021 08:05

I guess more than anything it concerns me that I know it's influencing his wife a bit who I don't believe would ever have thought any of these thoughts if it weren't for him

OP posts:
Sleepyblueocean · 12/10/2021 08:26

It is unlawful not to but there are situations where it would be considered reasonable not to
The fines I know about are people who are positive but have gone socialising in public places.

purpleme12 · 12/10/2021 08:28

Mmm somehow I don't think that's what he's thinking of
Oh well just wondered
