Could my child have very mild covid!

Ds woke up around 6.30.am a bit bunged up, complained off a sore throat and coughed once after waking (like literally one cough). He also coughed a couple times in the night but minimal a couple seconds each type thing. Night time coughing isn't unusual for him. Rang the school at 8.30am to say he won't be in as keeping an eye on his symptoms. Family member he has had contact with has typical cold symptoms.

It's now nearly half 1. He's no longer bunged up, he hasn't had any Calpol whatsoever but his sore throat has subsided. He hasn't coughed since this morning. He's ate like a total pig 😅 he has been his normal energetic self.

He's 10. He has been known to try and fake illness but he couldn't have faked a bunged up nose!

My plan was to keep an eye on his symptoms and get a test tomorrow if it progressed into anything - thinking it could be the start of something but clearly not!

I know mornings are worse with a cold but it's just miraculously disappeared.

Feel like an idiot keeping him off school but didn't want to risk it.

He could have covid or it could be a cold.

orangina01 · 08/10/2021 13:37

Just do a lateral flow and see. My child had cold symptoms and came up positive straight away. Other child had the same symptoms and has been negative. We confirmed all results on PCR.

AlexaShutUp · 08/10/2021 13:37

You did the right thing keeping him off. I'd get him tested ASAP so that, if it isn't covid, he can go back to school as soon as he's well enough. Otherwise you'll have to keep him off while you're waiting for results(

Fallagain · 08/10/2021 13:37

It’s worth remembering LFT only pick up 60% of positive cases.

But don't assume it isn't covid if you get a negative LTF. You still need a pcr anyway.

I'm very aware of that. I have lft tests and wouldn't even bother wasting my time using them on him. They are rubbish.

The problem his symptoms have lasted about an hour! 😅 he always does this to me. He woke up coughing one morning a while ago... Took him for a pcr, by the time we get there cough has gone. Test was negative also! I'm so done with all this!

It's more than likely just a simple cold, lots going around at the moment. However as you've school about symptoms you'll more than likely need a negative PCR test before you can send him back, even if he is well.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/10/2021 13:44

My DDs confirmed Covid symptoms only lasted a few hours. (Sent home school at 10am, perfectly well by 2pm, then at home for 10 days...)

BlackInk · 08/10/2021 13:45

As you've got him at home anyway I would take him for a PCR test on the basis of him having a cough, albeit a mild one. Both children and adults can get Covid with mild or even no symptoms.

Now that you've alerted the school to him having some possibly Covidy symptoms you would feel awful if you didn't test, sent him back in and he went on to develop more symptoms and test positive.

I would book a PCR and do an LFT whilst waiting. Results should be back within 24 hours or so and if he's well in himself he can do schoolwork remotely.

The school are pretty relaxed (not really a good thing) never even mentioned a test and said they would see him Monday hence why I'm a bit confused! They allow kids in with cold symptoms too - I am not just talking a sniffle either - seen kids coughing they guts up on the school run this week. Dd has gone in with a snotty recently as I was told to send her in. But thankfully they've only had 1 confirmed case so far throughout the whole thing! Maybe if they had more they would be a bit stricter!

Don't waste the day, book and take a PCR test asap today, you'll get the results back sooner than if you wait till tmrw...

MindyStClaire · 08/10/2021 13:49

I'm all over PCR testing, my two get dragged to the test centre at the first hint of a fever or cough. I wouldn't be testing for this.

I am disregarding the night time cough as he always coughs at night when it turns colder but it was literally one cough this morning so it's not really a cough as such. The school haven't even mentioned a test! They are pretty chilled about it all 🤨

I can't test him today as I have a v important package arriving (literally cannot afford for it to be left on my step or chucked over my fence) so we'll wait it out til tomorrow x

My son is currently confined to his room after a positive lateral flow test and a follow up PCR, he has a very slight tickly cough Saturday evening and nothing since. Had we not have done the tests we wouldn't have a clue and he would be in school spreading it about.
Better to be safe and book on for the test

peboh · 08/10/2021 14:29

@Klac30 I find it astounding that a school wouldn't require a negative result if a child has symptoms. I thought it was standard now? Considering how many schools are having outbreaks due to parents sending children in with mild symptoms and it turning into covid.

I'm not sure. I guess it's because he doesn't have one of the main symptoms that you are required to test for - although he's coughed it's not a cough. He hasn't coughed since the one time this morning. I know that delta often presents as a cold but technically we aren't required to test for cold symptoms if it's not one of the 'three main symptoms'.

It is odd. But we live in an area with fairly high cases. School have never requested tests or isolation for colds and we've seen only had 1 confirmed case - in a teacher - no kids got it. we are very lucky that there hasn't been an outbreak!
