How to protect myself when driving a potentially Covid positive person for a PCR

I’m single jabbed - is there any safety precautions I can take when driving? I’ll double mask and open the windows- anything else?

Is it safe for both of us to sit in the front? Or the passenger to sit at the back?

Both of you double mask, windows all open. Passanger in back behind passenger seat

middleager · 02/10/2021 17:20

My DH drove both me and DS for (positive) tests two weeks ago, separate days.
He didn't catch Covid.

Last year he drove DS2 for a (positive) test and avoided it too.

All times it was masks, window and passenger in back, opposite side to driver to give most distance possible. These were 15 min journeys.

Confused10101 · 02/10/2021 17:21

@Covidworries I didn’t realise the bit about behind the driver seat..I assume that’s what you meant?

Cannot get them to mask- due to claustrophobia, but I’ll double mask.

@middleager thank you that helps!

Yes mine will be 15-20 one way journey as well…

If they won't wear a mask I'd order a postal test rather than go for drive through test

Yep if they refuse a mask ask them to call a taxi or use a postal test

That seems unfair to the taxi driver!

Oh the taxi driver will LOVE that. Hmm If the person thinks they are positive, I think that would be illegal or very immoral!
Aroundtheworldin80moves · 02/10/2021 17:42

Do you live with them? Wouldn't this make you a close contact and need to isolate?

Confused10101 · 02/10/2021 17:51

No I don’t live with them

I don’t want to put a taxi driver at risk

It would be better if they wear a mask but I struggle with anxiety and claustrophobia so I understand how difficult it is to manage

I’m trying to do a drive through so that the test is done properly as supposed to someone who is very nervous trying to do the test and getting it wrong..

OP posts:
BluebellsGreenbells · 02/10/2021 17:52

Why? That’s what they do here! Taxi drivers are allowed to take them - some cabs are enclosed anyway.

It’s up to the taxi driver if they chose to take them

No different to collecting people from the airport - or serving in retail or working in a school.

You are all welcome to work there

You know at a drive through you still do the test yourself ? It's the same as a postal one - no one does it for you .
Confused10101 · 02/10/2021 17:59

I know but atleast it’s better than them struggling alone at home…

They are a relative and I don’t want to just ‘leave them to it’

Coming back to the topic..I’m just looking at ways to make this as safe as possible 😊

The question on the booking site is 'do you or someone you live with' have a car etc. So I'm not sure that it's within the isolating rules for you to be in a car with them.
Obviously if you aren't bothered by that then that's fine, but thought I'd mention it.

If you're happy to be in a car with them, while they're unmasked and with the windows shut (as the test centre won't allow you to have the windows open while you're there) then you may as well order a postal test and go in their house while they do it. At least then you can have the windows open, or even be outside looking through the window while they do it inside if you think just having company will be all they need?

Remember your mask protects them, their's protects you, so even if you mask up you'll only get very limited protection.

Whichjab · 02/10/2021 19:50

Get a postal and sit in the garden with them whilst they do it?

I'm not sure what answer you are looking for.

duffeldaisy · 02/10/2021 19:59

"Get a postal and sit in the garden with them whilst they do it?"

That's a good idea.
Or if they prefer, there are videos on how to take a lateral flow, so they could just follow the instructions visually, which is clearer for some people than reading them
This guy is very reassuring and it's really clear what to do

If they are positive and you are only single jabbed you'll be classed as a close contact and have to isolate for 10 days.

It really should be someone they live with driving them, have you looked to see if there's any walk through test centres near you they could go to?
Safest and best option in this situation is they get a home test.
