Second jab for 16yos and 17yos

AlexaShutUp · 02/10/2021 09:45

Just wondered if the official line is still only one jab for 16yos and 17yos?

16yo dd had her first pfizer jab in August and would like to have another one. Our understanding has been that this age group are currently only eligible for one dose, but she now knows of a few people of her age who have managed to book second ones. One of those has a CEV parent, which I appreciate is different, but the others don't. Does anyone know what the official line is on this now?

Also, she is about to start a part time job working with vulnerable (elderly) people. Would this make any difference to her eligibility? Her employer knows that she has only had one jab and they haven't said anything. DD really wants the work experience but she is really anxious about putting people at risk. She is going to ask her new employer but just wondering if anyone knows anything in the meantime.

Official guidance is only 1 vaccine, unless they are CEV or lives with someone who is immuno suppressed, or they start to work in the health or care environment. Her new employer maybe able to provide her with proof of employment (like a contract, payslip or ID badge) that will enable her to have a second vaccine

I just got a text to book ds age 16 in for his second jab

toomuchlaundry · 02/10/2021 11:11

Why did you get the text @Iamaslummymummy? All medical stuff for DS(16) goes to him now.

Interesting though you have had the call for the second jab.

Iamaslummymummy · 02/10/2021 11:35

DS has Asperger's so my number is still registered for him.

Thank you, that's very helpful to know. She has a contract already, so we will try to investigate whether this will change her eligibility. Does anyone know where we could ask about this?

My DS was contacted by GP last week and booked for second dose next week. He's 17

That's interesting. Is he vulnerable in any way or do you have CEV family members? Or is he within 3 months of hitting 18?

The good news for your DD OP is that once she starts work in a care home she will become eligible for a second vaccine.
Otherwise a normal 16 or 17 year old would not - unless they have underlying conditions (but they would have been vaccinated months ago in group 6 anyway) or if they work in health or social care.
Just take proof of employment to walk-in centre for your DD.

user18954 · 02/10/2021 12:44

You can book online. It will ask if your DD works in health or social care - tick social care.
Otherwise go to a walk-in centre with contract/ID badge etc.

Some 16-17 yos being called in by GPs will be due to the GP having spare slots/vaccines and able to decide themselves who to vaccinate instead of wasting vaccines - GPs have this right to decide to vaccinate outside the normal guidelines to avoid wasting vaccines (but not less than 8 weeks between doses).

user18954 · 02/10/2021 12:46

Her employer won't tell her to get the 2nd vaccine if she is 17 because the law about care home staff having 2 vaccines only applies to over 18s.
But as health/social care staff, she is entitled to 2 vaccines as it is desirable for these staff to be fully vaccinated even if under 18.

Wellbythebloodyhell · 02/10/2021 12:47

@AlexaShutUp providing she's 8 weeks post 1st dose if she takes her contract with her to a walk in centre she should be able to get her 2nd dose.

Have you tried to book it on the online NHS app and tick that she's a healthcare worker? Or call 119 or your local CCG

myrtilles · 02/10/2021 13:07

If you put your dds details into the NHS vaccination site you will be able to book a second vaccination. Wonder why the government haven’t publicised this?

LookdeepintotheParka · 02/10/2021 13:08

@AlexaShutUp my DD is CEV and has herself been vaccinated with the 12-15 group so maybe? I'll ask DS if any of his friends have been contacted but he's only just turned 17 so it's not an age thing Confused

frasersmummy · 02/10/2021 13:15

My ds 16 got an unexpected text the other day with his second covid vaccine appt
There is no reason I can think of ..just seems to have been auto generated

He will go ..if they turn him away so be it

AlexaShutUp · 02/10/2021 14:24

Thank you all for your responses. DD is not quite at the 8 week point yet, but will be quite soon so it's really good to know that she will be able to get her second jab.

Has anyone heard anymore about this yet? A couple of newspapers reported JCVI has approved 2nd jabs for 16-17s and announcement is imminent…but that was few days ago and I haven’t seen anything further.

Thanks.

Lupinhere37 · 07/11/2021 23:18

Friend’s DS got a letter inviting him for his second (not quite 17) and when they got to the appt they were turned away.
Now they’ve not been able to book him anywhere. They’re in Hampshire.
