Exposure to infectious to symptomatic timeline

Hmmm I was in a restaurant with 5 other people on Thursday. On Friday one of them tested positive. We were together 3 hours. I know I don't need to isolate but now feel bad going out and about in case I am spreading it. So far I feel ok in myself. Been doing daily LFTs. When do you become infectious after exposure? I'm meant to be spending the afternoon with work colleagues this week but now feel I should pull out just in case. Urghhh.

I feel really conflicted about the new guidelines.

I have had a negative lateral flow followed by a positive PCR taken just hours later. Same happened with my daughter. So I don't trust them at all.

Also a negative test doesn't last forever it just means in that minute you didn't have covid.

But we are told it's ok to go about our business as normal despite being a close contact.

There's no right answer really I'd just let people know and make a decision based on what makes you comfortable.

It’s recommended that if you are a close contact of someone with covid that you get a PCR test. I would get one in your case and isolate until you get results, as possibly the person had covid when you saw them.

DD had covid this week, I told work I didn't have childcare so had to stay off with her, there was no way that I wanted to teach up to 150 students a day or send her to my parents who have health conditions to possibly pass it on. As it happens we are on day 8 and I haven't tested positive yet and she accidentally coughed and sneezed over me, hopefully it'll remain that way and being double jabbed worked.

Interestingly though she must have caught it from school, none of her close friends tested + and I know she'd been hugging them and being close, so it must have been someone she sat next to in class and she wouldn't have gotten any closer than necessary.

I sat at a dinner table for 2 hours with someone, laughing/hugging, who tested positive the next day, it’s been 5 days of negative LFTS for me and no symptoms so perhaps it’s my double jabs working?

I think I caught it in a restaurant on a Thursday (possibly a dinner party on the Tuesday). Symptoms started on the Sunday. My mother was staying with me that weekend. Sent her home mid afternoon Sunday when I spotted that I felt dodgy and did a positive LFT and she in turn developed symptoms on the Thursday.

I think there is no point doing a pcr until about 4 days minimum after contact and even that could be too soon. But makes sense to LFT daily as presumably if you aren’t pumping out enough virus to trigger an LFT, you should be unlikely to infect others.

I was LFT negative on the Saturday so I think my mother must have caught it from me on my first symptomatic day.

DDs best friend tested positive Sunday last week. They had last been in contact on the Friday. DD did daily lateral flow tests, all negative until Saturday when she developed a sore throat and headache and then tested positive on a lateral flow, confirmed by PCR, so 8 days after exposure. The rest of us have all had negative PCRs and negative daily lateral flow tests so far.

Up to10 days after exposure- the average is 5.
you are infectious 2 days before any symptoms start if you have Covid.

Machchchengo · 28/09/2021 09:20

Upto 14 days, hence why we originally we had to isolate for 14 days as a close contact. It was reduced to 10 days as only 2% of people develop symptoms after 10 days but I've known of a few people develop symptoms 10-11 days after exposure.

Pippioddstocking · 28/09/2021 10:37

I tested positive 9 days after my DD, double jabbed. Gutted as I was starting your think I wouldn’t catch it.

TerribleZebra · 28/09/2021 11:13

I tested positive 8 days after DS. We've now had covid in the house for 17 days and DH and DD haven't caught it. It's very weird who gets it and who doesn't (I'm double vaccinated)
