My sister and brother in law just arrived to stay with my parents and unfortunately my BIL has just had a positive Covid test (v long story that will make me too mad to recount involving irresponsible quarantining).

I’m so worried as they stayed overnight at my parents house before getting the result. My parents went for test today but they are in their 60s and DM is immunosuppressed (was on shielding list).

The internet is a dark hole just now, so just wondering if anyone had any reassurances for older ppl getting Covid and being okay or not getting it in same household.

DS and BIL are now self isolating elsewhere.

Sorry to hear. Has everyone been vaxed?

Scottishmum1984 · 24/09/2021 22:41

Yes everyone, including BIL who got it. DM vax was right at the start though due to shielding.

My Dept has carried out a project related to covid and it’s a mixed bag to be honest. Some get it, some don’t. There’s a lot getting it that have been vaccinated (obviously you still get it, but supposedly don’t end up in hospital) Hmmon that score…
Someone had it in our office, not symptomatic and they passed it to no one (that we know of). Presumably if your coughing/sneezing/not hand washing etc then your more open to it.
Personally a few elderly, CEV(emphysema and lung cancer survivor) 85+ relatives have had it and although sick, they were ok, manageable.
Hope everyone will be okFlowers

It might be alright. I was in hospital a while ago and the person in the bed beside me had covid. They were beside me for a day and a half before the nurses discovered this and moved us but I didn't catch it. Have never had it that I know of and was unvaccinated at the time too. Hopefully luck will be on your side.

We are still waiting for results...

To be honest, your parents probably tested too soon if they tested very shortly after your BIL tested positive. Hopefully it’ll be negative but that doesn’t mean they won’t go on to develop it.

I caught covid from our removal men last December. It was 5 days after we moved before I became symptomatic. I suppose o could have tested positive if I had tested earlier but I wouldn’t have known to test prior to that.

Hope your parents OK! My husband didn’t catch it when I & both my children had it. And my parents didn’t catch it from my kids either. My mum is CEV.

Cissyandflora · 25/09/2021 08:31

I can maybe reassure you with my tale- one of my children had it and none of us caught it. We are in overcrowded apartment and share one bathroom. I was amazed. So it can happen. Also she had the super contagious delta variant they think.

Becca7910 · 25/09/2021 09:31

I know of 2 people not getting it, who were living in same household as 2 that had it. All the best x

Mantlemoose · 25/09/2021 09:37

SIL tested positive (double vac inated), Brother didn't get it (not vaccinated). No distancing took place.
Friends in household 5, one kid one adult got it, 1 adult 2 kids didn't. 1 adult had 1 vaccine didn't get it. Again no distancing. SIL was oldest but even then like a flu. All good after a week. Makes no sense at all....

Bizawit · 25/09/2021 10:15

If your BIL is not symptomatic there’s a much lower chance that he will pass it on/ your parents will get sick.
Wishing you all the best op. So stressful Flowers

Scottishmum1984 · 25/09/2021 20:54

Thanks, they have had negative tests. Obviously as pp said, this would be very early to test positive anyway as they were only around him the evening before. We are all just crossing our fingers! I can update again in a few days.

My mother came to stay last weekend for only the second time since all this kicked off. I did a clean LFT on Saturday morning. Sunday morning my husband left on a business trip and Sunday lunchtime I started to feel a bit off/ sore throat and tested positive on LFT. I packed mummy off home immediately but she came down with covid 4 days later.

So I would second those saying that daily LFTs are the way to go for them a s perhaps a day 5 pcr. Immediate pcr doesn’t tell you anything
