Those with DC with COVID

DD10 has Covid, started with symptoms Monday night, positive LFT that night, positive PCR on Tuesday. She’s not too bad, she’s been on the couch since Monday night, she’s really lethargic, mild temp, mild cough.
Just wanted to ask how long people’s DC have been ill for with COVID for? Not sure what to even expect. Will she get more poorly? Will she be ok in a couple of days?
I’m more worried than I thought I’d be if I’m honest. We have followed all rules and guidelines but I haven’t been overly concerned about catching it but now she has it I’m worried sick all the time. Maybe it’s just the unknown? None of us have had it before so this is all new to me.
I suppose I’m just looking for some reassurance and support. TIA

My DD (5) had Covid in July, after DH and I had it. She started with a mild cough then had a high temp of 40. Very lethargic, vomiting. The temp lasted 6 days on and off, she also developed a rash. By day 7 once her temp was normal she was much happier in herself just tired. Back to her usual self by day 10. The cough only lasted a week

Know the feeling. There is so much out there that says oh kids don't get it.

But they do.

My DD is 12. She started on September 8th, mainly headache tummy ache sinus pain and being sick plus exhausted.

Worked from home on Monday 21st, seemed much better. Went to school Tuesday 22nd and 23rd but off again yesterday and today as exhausted and could hardly eat yesterday.

It can be a nasty bug and take a while to get over while at the same time not being "serious" in the pneumonia/hospitalisation sense.

Bumpsadaisie · 24/09/2021 14:49

By my son (9) has had one day of illness and otherwise has been fine!!

Bumpsadaisie · 24/09/2021 14:51

I guess just remember it takes a good couple of weeks to really get over a nasty virus if not more.

CandleWick4 · 24/09/2021 14:54

Thanks for the responses. I suppose I do have to remember it’s a virus and can take a while to get over. I feel a little bit in the dark about it, like a PP said people just keep saying ‘oh kids are fine with it’ but this has knocked her a bit.

DS had it in August, he had a temperature and a bit of a stuffy nose for 2 days. That was it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/09/2021 14:55

He's 8.

Silkiescatz · 24/09/2021 14:56

About 10 days for DD in y11 and we also both have it and are still pretty ill with it.

Silkiescatz · 24/09/2021 15:10

Ds escaped. Known some others with no symptoms. Most of her y11 friends have been like her and vomitting plus cold / flu type symptoms, only clue is that in the past when she has had a cough she is often sick with it. I have asthma and only one breathless. Quite like a 2 week gastric flu here though DS who is the thiniest, tiniest child has escaped. He is hardly ever ill and asd so doesnt get close to many people.

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 24/09/2021 15:18

DD got it on Sunday, extremely tired, temp hasn't dropped below 39 unless she's taken calpol, hot/cold, sensitive skin, legs hurt to walk, developed a weak cough and change in taste a couple of days later - the cough is nothing like I expected, complained of a headache and really sore throat since Sunday, keeps forgetting things, upset stomach and ulcers and cold sores to add to the list. She lost her appetite initially but that seems to have returned. The breathing problems I was concerned about haven't happened (yet) she just says her chest feels a bit tight. So all in all pretty much the same as any horrible autumn virus but a bit longer lasting than normal.

thirdistheonewiththehairychest · 24/09/2021 15:31

My 10yo had it last week and was quite poorly for 3-4 days (temperature, cough, no appetite, lethargic). She bounced back pretty quickly after that but not before giving it to me first Angry

ohmyohmy123 · 24/09/2021 17:47

My 12 year old was unwell for about 4 days with sore throat, temp, nausea and sinus pain. on day 6 now and just has a cough.

10 year old had no symptoms until day 2 when his throat burned. On day 5 his eyes hurt.

All well other than that thankfully.

Smartiepants79 · 24/09/2021 17:56

Mine has had what is essentially a fairly ordinary cold for a few days. 1 day of lethargy and maybe a temperature. That’s been about it. She’s definitely on the mend after maybe 5 days. If it hadn’t been covid she’d have just been going to school as normal - that’s how not ill she’s been!

savagebaggagemaster · 24/09/2021 17:57

I have Covid now as does my ds (12)
Day 1 of symptoms he started with a dry cough and very tired. Day 2, fever of 38.8 which I managed to bring down with calpol and nurofen. Day 3 He was sick in his sleep - I had him sleeping in the room beside us, thankfully. Still up and down with fever and very tired. Day 4 = today and it's the first day he's not had a fever. I'm keeping everything crossed that this means things are improving. He's lying around watching YouTube stuff on hurricanes. He says he's still feeling quite tired, but not as sleepy.

AwFeebs · 24/09/2021 19:50

2 out of my 3DC currently have covid.

You wouldn't know 7 year old DS has it.

DD11 felt rough for the day, temp, achey, generally unwell. Better today though.

Orangejuicemarathoner · 24/09/2021 19:54

I'm a teacher. Hundreds of children in our schools have had it. Roughly half have had no symptoms. Roughly half have been ill to varying degrees. 3 have serious long term complications, out of a 4 school MAT. The others have recovered in a few days or weeks. Although there does seem to be a lot of low platelets in some of the recovered children leading to nose bleeds, cuts healing very slowly, etc

Randomuser9876 · 24/09/2021 20:12

My 2 both had it, 7 and 10.

They were on the sofa with a temp for a few days, off food and tired for a week.

They still seemed a bit "off" even after 10 days but nothing major.

It is scary when it's actually in your house so look after them and yourself.

KurtWilde · 24/09/2021 21:38

Mine barely had any symptoms, mild sore throat, bloodshot eyes. No temp or cough. Didn't affect their appetite. Couple of days and they were fine.

Lushmetender · 24/09/2021 21:56

3 dc had it. Ds who is 13 pretty poorly for 8 days. Now at school but flaking out at 6 pm. He’s at a scout camp so we’ll see! Dd x 2 isolating till tomorrow! 11 y o asymptotic and dd who is 9 I’ll for 6 days but has horrible cough! She is out of isolation tomorrow at midnight! Not a nice virus!

Ilikecheeseontoast · 24/09/2021 22:01

My 3 year old coughed for a month afterwards. Otherwise well though.

MotherOfKitten · 24/09/2021 22:01

DS (10) started symptoms 8 days ago. He had a really persistent cough, sore throat, heavy cold and tiredness for 6 days. Last 2 days he's been much better- just the annoying cough left now.

He's never ill though, and if he is he usually shakes it off in 24 hours. So this has been a bit of a surprise! He's not been really poorly or anything, it's just gone on for longer than usual!

CandleWick4 · 25/09/2021 09:49

Thanks for the responses. She felt better yesterday but is feeling worse again today. She’s just got no energy at all.

Similar to mine. She was off school again Thursday Friday having gone back on Tuesday/weds (after 10 days off)

Now it's Saturday and she's much better after two days rest.

Don't worry. Your DD will get over it and the general trajectory will be improvement. Just let her rest and give her good food.

DH and I have it too and it's taking a long time to shift. We bought a cheap oximeter just to check we didn't have low oxygen causing the exhaustion. - no we all have very healthy sats levels.

Just takes a while to get over.

This resonates. At no time has my Dd been massively suffering - just headache and tummy ache at times - but the fatigue has been something else.

She has never really been ill longer than a day or two and has always bounced right back so this has been a surprise.

Autumngoldleaf · 25/09/2021 20:52

Ironically my 9 year old looked ghastly and grey but apart from a mild headache you wouldn't have known she had it + very very tired.

She now has a cold and cough and that is making her feel unwell and wheezy.

Dd14 now has it. She started off with very flushed cheeks, headache then felt incredibly sick... Then hot but no mad temp then sore throat, cold symptoms... No appetite...

It's day 5 for her so I hope she makes it through the night OK and she's turned a corner.
