How to book third dose (500,000 vulnerable)

User7261498 · 23/09/2021 19:46

Hi,
My mum is eligible for the third primary covid dose for which 500,000 extremely vulnerable people are eligible for (separate to the booster programme), she has blood cancer and had radiotherapy in the last 6 months. Her first two doses were over 6 months ago with less than a 3 week gap due to rushing through so she was fully vaccinated before her treatment. I'm really keen for her to get the third dose but she's heard nothing! On the NHS booking system you can only book your first two doses or the booster and when attempting to book the booster it won't let her. She has called her doctor and they said it's nothing to do with them. She has contacted her lymphoma team but has yet to hear back. Anyone else had more luck?

There's definitely some confusion.
My DM was sent a link to book for flu and Covid before the govt announced that covid boosters would be given. A couple of days later the covid part was cancelled with an apology. We went for the flu today and they were doing both but only if you were 6 months after your 2nd covid jab. She was 3 days too early.

That sounds like the regular booster, not the third primary for the 500,000?

If it was third primary, who notified her and when (its the most severely immune suppressed people - not all the CEV)

Still nothing from GP telling us what's going on - over 3 weeks now since thus group were promised speedy notifications

ajandjjmum · 24/09/2021 20:10

@CiderWithLizzie

Is that the case *@Kitkat151*? I’ve got my flu jab booked on Monday and covid booster on Wednesday?
My Aunt had her flu jab last Friday, and when she went for her booster on Tuesday they turned her away, saying there needed to be a 7 day break.

No problem - she actually had the booster today.

PheasantsNest · 24/09/2021 20:33

I'm having my flu jab and third primary Covid vaccination tomorrow. They checked and there doesn't need to be any gap. It's only if you are having the shingles jab that you need a 7 day gap I was told.

nether · 24/09/2021 20:59

I was told you can have them together, or you need to have 7 days separation.

Not sure why!

teenagetantrums · 24/09/2021 21:03

I got a txt today only just over 50..no health conditions. I have booked an appointment . Not sure l need it really but have a few weeks to think about it

QuickieNCforthis · 24/09/2021 21:08

I don't think some posters are understanding that this isn't a booster, it's a 3rd jab for the CEV!

Have those who are CEV tried ringing 119 if there is no success with the GP? Or your consultants' secretaries?

I work in health and social care and was able to get my booster at a "grab a jab" centre. I don't understand why GPs aren't signposting the CEV to them. I was the only person at the place I went to. It seems such a shame that those most in need of the extra dose haven't been able to access them yet, despite the 3rd jab for the 500k being announced before boosters.

QuickieNCforthis · 24/09/2021 21:11

Also, we have been advised by our nhs team that we can get both our flu jabs and our booster on the same day. I had mine less than a week apart. Unless there's a specific reason applying to the immunocompromised, it seems fine to have them close together. Don't cancel a third dose for this reason!

nether · 24/09/2021 21:17

Yes.

119 can't help with third primary, and say you need to talk to GP

GP claimed they hadn't received guidance, so we emailed them with it and asked quite plainly how tomsecure a third primary jab (given that it's now over 3 weeks since they were promised imminently, and the later-announced boosters have begun)

We also emailed specialist nurse at the hospital unit which treats the immune suppressed person - there surely must be someone at the hospital who can fix this if sioence continues from GP. CCG if no progress by the middle of next week

LockdownCheeseToastie · 24/09/2021 21:20

Also east mids and also need a third primary dose but haven’t been called, very very frustrating as these ought to be done before the main booster dose people.

nether · 24/09/2021 21:22

Oh, and point of detail - the third primary is not for all CEV, just the 500,000 most immune suppressed people.

Friend who is CEV has just had booster.

This policy really has been really badly implemented, as those who are the most clinically vulnerable CEV and immune suppressed are finding that these who are CEV (but not immune suppressed) are getting boosters sooner. Despite the third primaries allegedly being implemented a fortnight earlier than start of boosters.

I wonder if anyone in DoH (or whoever runs vaccines) knows that it's not working?

User7261498 · 24/09/2021 21:29

My mum emailed the hospital lymphoma team earlier this week citing the guidance and has heard nothing back. On Monday she will follow up with the Blood Cancer UK template and cc in the CCG. This is an absolute shambles!

@teenagetantrums you are referring the booster jab. That's entirely separate to what I am talking about in this post.

119 know nothing and refer you to GP. GP knows nothing and tells you to call 119. Ring CCG they never return your call. This has been my life for the last 3 weeks.

I had a bit of a go on the phone to CCG reception and said how disgusted I was. Received a phone call next day giving me an appointment. We shouldn't have to do the running round. It was the same with getting my children done as they share the household with me.

GoodnightGrandma · 24/09/2021 21:32

My local GP run hub is doing Covid and flu together

GoodnightGrandma · 24/09/2021 21:33

@nether

The rules have changed, no need for 7 days between now. Except for the shingles jab.
8MinutesToSunrise · 24/09/2021 21:45

My local walk I'm vaccine centre showed me guidelines that to administer 3rd primary dose they needed a letter from either a consultant or GP stating severe immunosuppression and therefore eligibility. It's an absolute shambles. Good luck!

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 24/09/2021 21:56

My trust is currently vaccinating those who had their second dose before the end of Feb.

Hmmph · 24/09/2021 22:06

Huh? What 3rd jab??

I am a carer for my elderly mother, who is CEV due to having CLL (although 5 years post treatment). Should she be having a 3rd dose and a booster?

I have heard nothing about 3rd doses until this thread and my Mum hasn’t yet been invited to either...

PheasantsNest · 24/09/2021 22:23

@Hmmph it's only those with severe immunosuppression that are being given a third primary vaccine. It's not all CEV people.

PheasantsNest · 24/09/2021 22:24

@JulesRimetStillGleaming that's the booster. This whole thread is about the 3rd primary vaccine for the immunosuppressed. It's completely separate to the boosters.

The walk in clinic I went to (Lambeth) was running two clinics that week specifically for 3rd primary doses for the immunosuppressed that I was notified about via text.

It sounds like I’ve been very lucky that it was that simple.

I think she does, as all these with blood cancers are included amongst the 500,000 most critically vulnerable
HalzTangz · 24/09/2021 22:53

According to the NHS website you wait until GP contacts you

User7261498 · 24/09/2021 23:15

@HalzTangz

Well that's great because her GP said they aren't contacting anyone and never contacted anyone for first or second doses
