Flu and Covid vaccine at the same time for 12-15 year olds?

My DS’s school is planning to give flu and covid vaccine at the same time on 4th Oct.

DS (14) has just had covid and was fine apart from a sore throat. I am dithering about giving consent for both vaccines and instead thinking of just getting the flu one for now which he normally has each winter due to mild asthma. He says he wants the covid jab but I guess I’m just uneasy about him having both together so soon after having it. Am I being daft?

The flu should be nasal if given at same time as Covid.

Alternatively you can pay (I think 15) to get a teen a flu jab in boots

Djifunrsn · 23/09/2021 08:56

Not all boots do it for teens though

@Djifunrsn - yes it will be the nasal spray. If I decide to have them separately I’d rather him get the flu jab at school and sort out the covid one later as he will likely have the covid antibodies from having had the infection.

@Djifunrsn - sorry, I meant flu spray! I keep calling it a jab.

It's not "the school" that are giving anything, it's just that the school building is being used by the local health teams.

Are you sure they're giving both? Here, the originally planned flu dates are being used for Covid, but they won't now be giving flu on that date (not enough time to do both).

We've been told the health team (not the school, which is why it matters!) will apply the Gillick competency where a young person wants the vaccine but the parent hasn't consented.

@GreatPotato - yes I know it’s not school doing it. A health team will come in to administer. They are definitely planning on doing both at the same time. Our school has told us that Public Health England will only accept paper consent for the Covid vaccine so the forms are coming home this week. Anyone who does not have written consent from parent will not be eligible for the vaccine. Furthermore the health team will only bring enough vaccines based on the number of written consents notified to them by the school.

I remember that when I took the vaccination, the nurse has asked me if I had a flu jab in the last 7 days, so I had the impression that these shouldn't be given too closely.

I certainly won't happy for my son to have these 2 vaccination at the same time.

@beautifulday1 - thanks, that’s interesting you were advised not to have them too close together.

Sorry not advised but given that impression!

When did he have covid? Iirc you have to wait at least 28 days before having the vaccine. Studies have shown that immunity after infection lasts 9-12 months so far so you probably don’t need to rush to make the decision anyway.

Inastatus · 23/09/2021 10:09

@bumbleymummy - thanks. He had it 2 weeks ago so yes I’m thinking he has enough antibodies to not need it done at the moment.

Doing HPV and Pfizer jab for year 8 at child's school

StiggyZardust · 23/09/2021 12:06

The covid vaccine and nasal flu can be given at the same time.

halcyondays · 25/09/2021 12:35

You can have both jabs together but if you’ve had Covid you’re supposed to wait 28 days from your symptoms started before you get the Covid jab. Hopefully they will be able to get it a later date if this applies or they were off school on jabs day for any reason.

Inastatus · 25/09/2021 18:58

Thanks @halcyondays - yes, I think I’m going to wait a bit for the covid jab.

If your dc just had covid, you can't have vaxx anyway? I've filled in the consent form recently, and they ask you if they had covid within 28 days, assume you can't have the vaxx within 28 days?

My 15 year old has been offered covid and flu on the same day, but the flu will be an injection.
