Positive LFTs but negative PCR twice

So confused! My DC tested positive on an LFT, we booked a PCR which was negative. When we got the result we checked with another LFT (completely different batch) which was even more strongly positive. Repeated PCR - negative again.
So what's going on? There must be something causing the positive LFTs, there are loads of cases at school at the moment. Anyone had this happen? Just so confused as to what's the right thing to do

It's very strange isn't it. Same thing happened with my DSis. Positive on lateral flow and then negative on PCR. Tested again a few days later and PCR was positive. The rest of the family have the exact same symptoms but all testing negative.

karenm51 · 04/10/2021 09:42

@Thehollos That’s what we did - Swindon area, multiple people (including my DS) had negative PCRs from our local drive through site after getting positive LFTs, so I ordered a postal test which was positive. No idea if it’s just a coincidence, but a test from a different batch/site/lab definitely gave us different results

karenm51 · 04/10/2021 09:42

@Thehollos Also - hope you both feel better soon!

nc890 · 04/10/2021 10:05

We also know people with a family full of positive LFTs but all with negative PCRs.
So they are going to school and work, despite feeling a bit rough.

Also in the South West.

Something odd going on here.

People are using the negative PCRs as a reason to carry on as normal, so potentially spreading the Covid around with impunity, so the authorities need to look at what is going on with the PCR testing here.

DaxtheDestroyer · 05/10/2021 09:10

Here we go again, got another positive LFT last night for the same child so off for PCR today.

That is official advice!
TheHoneyBadger · 05/10/2021 14:38

It is official advice. Hence I'm working with colleagues, and those colleagues are teaching classes, despite having a covid+ child at home that they spent half the night up with being coughed and dribbled on.

The advice is bonkers hence the rocketing rates in 10-19 year olds. Vaccination team will be coming to my school at the END OF November apparently by which time either the school will have closed or everyone will have had it.

DaxtheDestroyer · 05/10/2021 15:44

Official advice is crazy. In my office one of the team has an entire household full of covid+ family yet they are absolutely fine to come in every day and spend all day in one small office with the rest of us.
Household isolation should not have been scrapped.

Negative PCR again. Something is clearly being picked up on the LFTs, it's always the same child who gets positive ones and the rest of us have never had one. Either the LFTs are not working or the PCRs are not working!

I really wish I hadn't just read it.
DH currently based near Swindon. Had to get a PCR after positive LFT. PCR was negative and so he's back in lecture theatres with 100 others today...

Just came to post this! I have replied with my experience, seems like a lot of people are doing the same. Will be interesting to see if anything comes of it

Mumto2busyboys · 06/10/2021 14:58

So glad I've read this. I feel like I'm going mad. So 4 positive lateral flow tests over 3 days symptomatic cough / headache. PCR test negative. I've requested a re test and been this morning.

From reading this I guess I'll believe the LFT, odd that so many PCRs not matching up...... I'm not a conspiracy theorist.....but what is going on, especially after seeing so many similar cases.

Tinysnickers · 06/10/2021 15:11

I've just found this thread via google.
My DD had a clear positive lateral flow, went for a pcr which was negative.
Other 3 family members negative on pcr and lateral flow.
Did another lateral flow this morning (different box, but all the older nose and throat ones) and instant strong positive again. Did another PCR this morning because school are going to want her back if shes "negative" but I don't know what to trust. She has a runny nose (but this is relatively normal for her, happens often) and had a very slight temp this morning for a few hours. But I wouldn't have known about the temp if I hadn't checked on an ear thermometer, she's not feeling or acting feverish or unwell.
There have been a couple cases at school but not that many really. None in her class.

ajja2021 · 06/10/2021 18:32

My DH is consistently getting positive LFTs when doing weekly testing followed by negative PCRs, it's been happening for 3 weeks Confused

Tinysnickers · 07/10/2021 09:23

3rd day of positive LTF. Rest of us still negative. Awaiting results of 2nd pcr...

JanglyBeads · 07/10/2021 09:38

Now reported by inews too, UKHSA say they’re investigating.

Tinysnickers · 07/10/2021 10:14

Inews have picked it up from the twitter thread, one of their journos was contacting people. But most of their 'article' is just quotes from twitter. I was a bit surprised, I thought that was a daily fail thing Grin

Silenceisgreat · 07/10/2021 13:42

My husband had 3 positive lateral flow tests then one negative pcr test he got another pcr test done next day at different centre and it was positive. I had 1 positive lateral flow test and now a negative pcr test done at same centre where my husband's was negative. We both have symptoms.

Peanut0583 · 07/10/2021 13:56

Family of 4, all testing positive on LFTs (strong positive) getting stronger as week goes on (see pic) we’ve all had negative PCR. Have ordered home PCRs to come today. Apparently the LFTs have a 0.04% chance of a false positive so the chances of all of us having a false positives multiple times seems pretty slim? Unless the LFTs are picking another virus up as we all have symptoms too?!

Peanut0583 · 07/10/2021 13:59

Can’t figure out how to add a photo 😅

Silenceisgreat · 07/10/2021 14:16

I've just had another positive lateral flow test 🤷‍♀️

Piapiano · 07/10/2021 14:27

This is a huge problem. I'm surprised it's not being reported more widely.

Silenceisgreat · 07/10/2021 14:46

This is very worrying as the county where our pcr was carried out is a hotspot for covid I dread to think how many people are actually positive and have been told they are negative. I'm going to try and book a pcr test tomorrow in our county.

Karma1981 · 07/10/2021 19:44

I'm in the swindon Area, dd has just done these two and there pretty obvious positives.
Just done a pcr test so let's see what it says.
