Will Year 7s be offered the jab?

My DD won't be 12 until just before the summer holidays next year, so theoretically she can't have the jab.

I was wondering if the jab would be offered to Y7s, as I can imagine it would be logistically challenging, seeing as only the oldest in the year will be eligible.

If they do jab Year 7s, will my DD be able to refuse (or can I refuse it on her behalf as she is underage)?

only the year 7's who are over 12 will be done. Nobody is going to be forced to have it, of course you can withold consent.

BlackberrySky · 22/09/2021 18:15

It is very easy to offer it to only the 12 year olds. The school has a list of birth dates and only sends those Y7 who are eligible.

I have the same question from a different angle. My y7 dd is already 12. I’m hoping she will be able to have it!

Againstmachine · 22/09/2021 18:39

It's 12 to 15s at moment, not 11s that may change at a later date.

Im not sure why you are asking for before summer next year there is a long time between then and now.

SonnetForSpring · 22/09/2021 18:41

Only 12 to 15. Those in year 7 who are 11 may be done at a later date depending on government directives.

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 22/09/2021 18:46

Definitely only y7s who are already 12 at my dc’s school

Itsanewdayforme · 22/09/2021 18:59

Yes Year 7’s but only those who are 12 years old. We received the letter today and it was clear.

KateTheEighth · 22/09/2021 19:10

Year 7s who are 12 on 22 September according to my kids' school

samsalmon · 22/09/2021 19:11

The vaccines aren’t approved for under-12s so it’ll be done by age, not year group.

Year 7s who are 12 on 22 September according to my kids' school

That would really piss me off as dd would miss it by days.

kimlo · 22/09/2021 20:38

my dd's school have said there will be a catch up later on in the year for children who have turned 12 after the first clinic, or if thet can't have it because of a recent positive pcr.

My daughter has just had covid. Fought it off well and thankful didn’t spread in the house . The risk of the vaccine is too great IMO and so I will not be consenting so hoping common sense kicks in before she hits 12

What common sense is needed? You don’t consent so your dd won’t be vaccinated. I will give consent for my DC and they will be vaccinated, thankfully. You have no right to decide for my children, just as I have no right to decide for yours. No ‘common sense’ needed.

She will have to wait to next round, stop obsessing, over something that. Was only brought in a few weeks ago.

Nerdygirl · 22/09/2021 22:21

The common sense to say it’s u ethical to vaccinate children against something that statistically they are at minimal risk from . That actually we should listen to jcvi who do this exact assessment of the balance of risk. Anyway as you say , it’s up to everyone to do what they want and I am comfortable with my approach

xyzandabc · 22/09/2021 22:29

Our local school is only doing yr8 and above. Having to go through dates of birth on multiple days then find the right child in the right class etc rather than just taking the whole class to the hall adds another layer to the whole process. Yr7s who are 12 and would like the vaccine have been advised to go to their GP to get it done.

There’s a boy at my school who misses it by a day

My ds is 12 and in yr7.... he has been offered it but I won’t be consenting (even though I desperately want to go abroad at Christmas 🙈)

I’m really glad you are comfortable with your decision, I am with mine. To me, common sense is to stop trying to influence others, especially on a thread like this and to leave each to make their own decision.
Akire · 22/09/2021 22:56

I wonder if it’s 12 because that when schools split in other countries? Some kids born on 1 sept will get protection for whole year 7. August baby will get it a few days before year 8 yet exposed to same risks and mixing. Are there medical reasons at 12 that mean 11.5 can’t have it?

NothingIsWrong · 22/09/2021 23:10

Our school is only doing Y8 and above, with a catch up session for Y7 12yos later in the year

BunsyGirl · 23/09/2021 05:05

My DS’ school is doing age 12-15 including 12 year olds in year 7. The vaccinations take place during the first week of October.

Carlislemumof4 · 23/09/2021 11:43

We were asked to return a consent form this week if our Year 7 child turns 12 before the end of November and they'd like to be vaccinated (North Cumbria). No guarantee of a vaccination during the school delivery programme as it depends which day the nurses are in your school.

Have signed DD's consent form, she's 12 this next week so fingers crossed she's included.
