Post covid bruising in DC age 11

Queenie8 · 20/09/2021 20:12

Has anyone else had any bruising post covid? DC age 11 tested positive on 30/08/21, has been back to school after isolation period ended but is struggling with aches and tiredness, but I'm more worried about the bruising. DC has random bruises all over their body, some in places that you wouldn't necessarily bruise.

I have contacted my GP but not had any response yet, hopefully they will be in touch tomorrow.

Push to see the GP. Unexplained bruising needs investigating.

SusannahHolmes · 21/09/2021 07:08

Covid can cause a platelet drop. Need to see doctor.

Queenie8 · 21/09/2021 18:18

GP called and DC is to have urgent blood tests, FBC and platelet count. I have tried to book the blood test, and the telephone line is only open 9-3, helpfully I am school staff. I just hope I can get through during my 30 min break 🤞🏻

You need to get this booked. If your employer is understanding, tell them. Hope all is well.

As your child is 11 they might be able to have blood tests done in the adult clinic. These always have much more availability than the paediatric sessions where I live. They also have an online booking system via swiftque. Maybe see if your local hospital is on it. Good luck getting an appointment. I am fully immersed in the blood test system now, but when I started this journey with my son, our gp sent us to a&e to get bloods as this was the only they could be done urgently! I hope your child is ok….. I agree that random bruising post illness needs to be investigated.

Sounds like itp which is low platelets and causes bruising, aching and tiredness. Also check for blood blisters in her mouth. The covid jab can cause itp. I have itp and my heamotilogist has said that itp has increased because of the vaccine

Lelivre · 21/09/2021 20:08

IPT is more common after covid than after the vaccine. Many times more. I had it severely after a virus as a child with the non blanching rash. I would check for a rash whilst you await tests.

Immune/idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura normally self corrects but there are treatments.

Queenie8 · 21/09/2021 20:45

DC had blood tests a few months ago, and thankfully we can have them done at our local clinic, we don't need to attend the paediatric dept at the hospital. DC also doesn't have the numbing cream.

DC had covid not the vaccine, along with their sibling who both then passed it on to me. Other DC nor I have random bruising, hence my concern.

That’s good. The GP will want to rule out Virus-associated idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. It tends to be acute in children and often self resolves but I had to be hospitalised, go as soon as you can.

AnyFucker · 21/09/2021 21:37

I would also be wanting to rule out non COVID-related reasons for the unexplained bruising too

Not everything is about that blasted virus

Queenie8 · 21/09/2021 21:41

I will step out of class at my earliest opportunity tomorrow to make the appointment. I too am more concerned about something other than post covid issues. I am lucky to have a great GP practice, who listen to concerned mums and do investigate even during covid times.

Blood test booked for Mon, the earliest appointment I could get. Thank you for the tip to use swift queue @beckypv.

Yes, this.

Unexplained bruising should always be investigated.

Good luck for the appointment

beckypv · 23/09/2021 10:52

@Queenie8 I’m glad you got a booking. You need to make sure you either have blood forms with you, or that the specific tests are requested on the system by the GP. I think Covid has helped integrate systems better so that gps/hospitals/blood test centres share info better online, but I remember seeing parent being turned away pre Covid because they didn’t have the correct forms from their doctors.

Lelivre · 23/09/2021 15:54

Please let us know how you get along. If you have any concerns (more bruising, unusual rashes, nosebleeds that are not usual) whilst you wait, please contact your GP again.

Queenie8 · 28/09/2021 19:01

DC blood test results are back and all within the normal range. I will be keeping a close eye on them for more bruising. Thanks for all the advice.
