Anything relieve the cough at all?

I know the answer is probably "no" as I know cough mixtures etc don't really do much even for normal coughs, but just thought I'd ask on the off chance anyone found anything at all that helped relieve the cough, especially through the night?
My DS (16) tested positive earlier this week and is quite poorly. Not needs hospital poorly, but certainly not the mild illness lots of youngsters seem to have had. The worst thing is the cough keeping him awake all night. He is asthmatic but his inhaler makes no difference and it's a different kind of cough to the one he gets when his asthma flares up, plus he isn't wheezy, so I am pretty sure it's "just" the covid cough. Anyone got any success stories on helping with the cough?

I am asthmatic and covid didn't affect my asthma at all, nor did the inhaler help the cough so I know what you mean. I was quite ill with it. What helped a little was sleeping propped up, uncomfortable I know.. plus when I had really bed coughing fits I tried lying on my front with a thin pillow under me.
I was sick quite a few times from the coughing.

I had the awful cough for 12 weeks. It was horrific. Nothing relieved it, at all.

The best relief I found was paracetamol and honey and lemon in hot water xx

Does Piriton help? I was told to take some by a GP with a normal cough and it definitely helped, don't know about a covid cough though.

I should add my cough only lasted about a week, I was actually hospitalised though by then my cough had gone. Other patients on my ward who were coughing badly were told to sleep upright.

I found steam inhalation helped, as did keeping the air moist generally. Dry air made it worse.

Thanks all. I've sent DH out for some honey and lemon and I've given DS some extra pillows to prop himself up. He is being extremely good at isolating from the rest of us and not complainig. I feel useless sitting downstairs hearing him coughing away and not being able to do anything. I hope it doesn't last too long.😢

Pholcodeine linctus is a good cough suppressant.

I have always taken couple of spoonfuls of coconut oil which has worked with sore throats although don't know about covid .

Littlemissmagnet · 19/09/2021 08:57

Saline nose reliever and linctus (Covonia) in an exprssio cup with hot water works a treat a fab nurse taught me that. Steam is always good. Hope he feels better soon

The cough is awful, still coughing 7 weeks after catching Covid although the cough isn't as bad as it was.

I found my inhaler did help, a little. I took extra doses of my Fostair inhaler which is a preventer and a long-acting reliever in one rather than ventolin.

I found sleeping on my side helped me to sleep. I also took pholcodine linctus for it, it did seem to help a bit before bed. I also sucked a salivix pastille at bedtime (I'm prescribed them for a dry mouth).

Otherwise I had hot honey and lemon drinks, other hot drinks like tea and I used jakemans lozenges. I use them for coughs and sore throats as they aren't medicated so you can take as many as you need and they don't clash with any other meds.

One thing I did find especially helpful when watching films or tv was to have an ice lolly followed by a honey and lemon drink. Seemed to suppress the worst of the cough for a decent length of time.

Glad to find this. I'm really struggling with this plus I've got loads of mucus being problematic and I'm now at the point where I'm vomiting from coughing so hard. What's coming up is phlegm/mucus which is really gross. Hate this! I'm a week in and was hoping it would be starting to ease by now! Just feel really dreadful!
