Being told to isolate before hospital outpatient appointment?

ZNation · 18/09/2021 14:06

Just wondering is this the norm for other hospitals, having a covid test 3 days before a outpatient appointment with a procedure but being told to isolate up till the appointment even though double jabbed?
I thought the rules had changed with double vaccinated people?

@Motorina totally agree. Having to police parents staying with their child. And that the are not swapping more than once in 24 hours, is a nightmare. 1 swap in 24 hours just isn't good enough when parents have jobs and other children.

I’ve got a surgery booked but although I’ve got a covid test booked for 3 days before I haven’t been asked to self isolate afterwards/before the op? So is it just very hospital dependent?

Rizzoli123 · 19/09/2021 20:47

I have to have a procedure. The receptionist rang and said do a lateral flow test and then isolate. I told them no as I have two young children (6 and 4) and there is no way I can do that as they want hugs and kisses after school. She said well that's what happenes when you need a procedure in covid

Husband after if person doing procedure will be doing the same

IncessantNameChanger · 19/09/2021 20:52

What kind of procedure? I have been in and out of hospital having fairly non invasive tests. I'm having a EMG next week ( sounds like a Victorian form or torture!) but the only covid tests I have had was during a inpatient stay during April time. That was on day 2 and four

It's not very consistent

Motorina · 19/09/2021 20:56

@Rizzoli123 the difference is that the person doing the procedure won't be having an aerosol of their saliva and lung secretions sprayed all over the theatre. And they will be wearing PPE from the moment they enter the building.

Odds are neither of those things apply to you. So the person having the procedure presents a far greater environmental hazard than the clinical team do.

It's really not about making life difficult. It's about trying to reduce aerosol precautions (donning and doffing high level PPE, leaving theatres fallow for aerosols to settle, scrubbing floors walls and ceilings between patients...) to allow a sensible number of people to be treated whilst minimising the likelyhood of other patients and staff breathing in covid particles.

Had an operation in Scotland two weeks ago. Reduce social contact for 7 days, then pcr test at hospital and SI for 3 days. DP was recommended to SI with me which was easy as he lost job during lockdown but had he still been worked we would have struggled.

RubyViolet · 19/09/2021 21:09

It’s standard l think. My husband had weekly chemotherapy in a bay of 4 patients, all were PCR tested 48hrs before and told to isolate. After one session he was contacted that he had been sat adjacent to a patient who had become ill that night and tested positive for Covid.
So the other 3 vulnerable patients were all exposed to Covid.
Fortunately my husband didn’t catch it but his daily radiotherapy then had to be moved to last appointment of the day to minimise the possibility of him infecting other patients that week. He was also unable to set foot in Oncology for that week as we were quarantined.
We were very lucky this time.

StopGo · 19/09/2021 21:13

My DS is scheduled for surgery next week. We both have to isolate after his PCR test. It is what it is.

c24680 · 19/09/2021 21:20

Husband has just had a procedure, we had to isolate for 4 days before.

MercyBooth · 20/09/2021 02:23

This is going to seriously backfire with ppl in jobs who cant isolate because they do a job like supermarket worker or delivery driver.
And if its deemed that its ok for them to go to work if they need to,, telling ppl to isolate from leisure but not from labor wouldnt be a good look either.

Nat6999 · 20/09/2021 02:40

My mum's friend has just had a total knee replacement, she had to isolate for 2 weeks before with 2 pcr tests & 2 weeks after she came home.

DottyHarmer · 20/09/2021 09:47

I think it’s hospital dependent. I did not have to do a test before seeing hospital consultant, but was asked to have a pcr before seeing GP!

HunterHearstHelmsley · 20/09/2021 10:10

I had a procedure last week. Isolation for 14 days and PCR test 3 days before. I wasn't able to isolate which that seemed fine with.

MrsSkylerWhite · 20/09/2021 10:12

Still required for 3 days here, an authority in the NW.

MercyBooth · 20/09/2021 17:04

@Nat6999 I know someone who is waiting for one of those. Did your mums friend mention how long she waited for it.

Nat6999 · 21/09/2021 12:47

MercyBooth she saw the consultant through choose & book in June & had her op on 11 August, she could have had it earlier but was going on holiday.

EggSheeran · 21/09/2021 13:24

Yes, my sibling has to have one every time they go in for chemo. Count yourself lucky you don't have to go into hospital every week and have the COVID test every time too!

It's to protect vulnerable people in the hospital!

MercyBooth · 21/09/2021 14:30

Thanks @Nat6999

CoffeeWithCheese · 21/09/2021 19:58

Friend of mine had a baby born in the middle of all of this - premature with a lot of health issues to the point he's needed a tracheostomy fitting. He's only just come home now, aged about 5 months.

Friend was made to promise by the hospital that, in order to be allowed to visit him in the hospital, she would only leave the house to fetch children from school on certain days and would stay isolated the rest of the time.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 22/09/2021 09:33

@Nat6999

My mum's friend has just had a total knee replacement, she had to isolate for 2 weeks before with 2 pcr tests & 2 weeks after she came home.
This is probably a silly question but why did she have to isolate for 2 weeks after?

If I understand correctly if DH had to have a procedure he would have to isolate for 4 weeks, and presumably I'd have to isolate alongside him. Sod that unless it's life threatening! I could work from home so that wouldn't be an issue but it seems a bit OTT.

Akire · 22/09/2021 09:37

I had this hospital wanted me go in for PCR test which would meant taxi ride both ways in enclosed spaces and then going in the hospital. I arranged local one at library where I could get there myself and be in and out without seeing anyone else, long as you have negative to show on the day they don’t care. They didn’t ask me if I lived with anyone else so seemed rather silly if you had family going out and possible infecting you but these are least they can ask.
