I’m not keen on him having a second due to the myocarditis, and we weren’t told to have a second. We were told only one on the day.

Yes, it's one jab for u18s.

Exceptions:

  • those who are CEV, CV or household CEV who should receive two
  • these within 3 months of their 18th birthday
GoodnightGrandma · 18/09/2021 07:24

Thanks. I just wondered if he needed two if we decided to fly .

From what I understand, no he is not fully vaccinated for travel. Risk for little reward

SpringRainbow · 18/09/2021 07:25

At the moment they are only being offered one.

This may change or it may not. Who knows?

UnmentionedElephantDildo · 18/09/2021 07:26

Ah, travel.

You need to check the definitions at your destination as well. It may be different there

GoodnightGrandma · 18/09/2021 07:28

OK thanks.
I’d rather not go away than him have a second jab at the moment.

Have I understood what you’re saying correctly? That if there’s a CEV household member they should have had two?
EileenGC · 18/09/2021 07:40

Most countries will only consider you fully vaccinated if you’ve had 2 doses.

Or 1 dose + have recovered from Covid in the last 6 months.

Check the specific country you’d want to travel to, but 90% of them won’t consider one dose as a full vaccination.

Is there a chance of testing him instead of using the vaccine passport?

@UnmentionedElephantDildo do you have a link for this? Sorry to butt in btw. We have a teen and a CEV in our household and I haven't been able to find answer to this question yet.
nether · 18/09/2021 07:45

Yes, household CEV are on group 6 terms and should have the 2 jabs

Check with your GP or ask centre manager at a vaccine hub. They will fall eligible for boosters idc (probably not until early next year, as they didn't become eligible at all until end March and you need six months since jab 2)

I think it's only the 500,000 most critically vulnerable who should be getting jab 3 irrespective of when first two jabs were given (don't know about health and care staff though)

www.england.nhs.uk/coronavirus/wp-content/uploads/sites/52/2021/03/C1228-Vaccination-of-adult-household-contacts-of-severely-immunosuppressed_31mar.pdf

Here's the letter confirming the eligibility for all over 16 household CEV - no mention of single jabs and six months before jabs for any other 16/17 yos (except CEV and CV which are the other categories which also were 16+)

Your question has made me realise that I've assumed, rather than know as fact, what the situation is for those aged 12-15

MissTheobald · 18/09/2021 07:55

Thanks. Certainly the doctor at the vaccine centre who administered my teen's jab seemed to think he'd be getting a second, but that was before the general roll out with 1 jab was announced. I might see if it's possible to ring the vaccine centre and find out.

beautifullymad · 18/09/2021 07:58

I've recently queried the second jab for the under 18's as we have two CEV in our household.

Apparently it's only for the family of those CEV who've been offered the extra 4th jab. That's the two plus extra one plus the booster.

These are the ones who are likely not to have made antibodies to the initial two shots. The severely immunocompromised.

It's not the case for the general CEV who should have made good antibodies.

It's actually fairly few households that qualify for double Jabs for healthy under 18's.

Is it 4 jabs for the 500,000 or is it 3?
Three with the 'super CEV' allegedly getting boosters first, irrespective of whether 6mths passed, - something that has failed to happen as so many are still, waiting to be notified, 119 can't help and GPs saying no guidance received.
Four - one jab asap and booster at an interval after that?

Im still v confused! Our GP is one that's saying no guidance yet received. But it's been over a fortnight, and it seems jabs have begun in some parts of the country. Might have to try the charity for the super-CEV person's condition

But it really shouldn't be thus difficult. We got the shielding notification within 48 hours of announcement. We've already been found and coded - we surely could have been notified by now.

Current guidance is 1 jab for "healthy" 16 and 17yo. No vaccination centre is going to go against this for the purposes of travel. Best to check the guidelines of your destination country what they expect from travellers to get into the country and also to use indoor venues.

I don’t want him to have a second currently, and I certainly won’t be doing it just for a holiday.

At the moment you have no choice to do it just for a holiday.

I know.🙄

No, not fully vaccinated.

The manufacturer says 2 doses are needed, the marketing authorisation (licence) says 2 doses are needed, other countries are doing 2 doses.

If you want your DC fully vaccinated, then you'd better hope the government revises this, and if you don't want your DC vaccinated then the current situation is what you want (though the risk of myocarditis is much higher if you contract Covid than with the vaccine).

This ridiculous situation is actually making 17 year olds delay their vaccines so that they get 2 vaccines when they are 18 and are thus fully vaccinated. So the government's single dose vaccine for 16-17 year olds is causing people not to get the vaccine that they need now to be protected in autumn and winter and help stop the spread.
