Will all Yr7s get the vaccine or only the ones over 12?

DS has just started secondary but won’t be 12 until the end of July next year.

I’d be happy for him to have the jab if they’re going to roll it out for this age group before the winter. He’s very tall for his age (age 14/15 year clothes), not sure if that’s relevant or it is going to be strict on age due to immune system development.

He’s already had a confirmed case of Covid (last November) but obviously he’s at risk of getting it again and with the mutations I’d rather he is protected.

OP posts:
frozendaisy · 16/09/2021 16:16

Everything I have read refers only to age not year group in school.

halcyondays · 16/09/2021 16:18

They’ll have to be 12, unfortunately, it’s not been approved yet for under 12s yet. They’ve been doing trials and I think the USA are hoping to start under 12s in the next few months.

HSHorror · 16/09/2021 16:19

It would be age. As it's not agreed by regulators until 12 yet even in usa.
Hopefully it might be agreed for 5+ soon

blameitonthecaffeine · 17/09/2021 06:56

They have to be be 12. We sent our letters out today. Our jabs aren't till early November so there will be a few more than there would be now but certainly not the 11 year olds.

Tryingtryingandtrying · 17/09/2021 07:01

A confirmed infection gives better protection than the jab against future infection anyway so try not to worry.

That’s not a proven fact and assumes no side effects or continuing illness from the infection.
marieantoinehairnet · 17/09/2021 08:02

It's based on age, not height Hmm

Can you give a source for this please? I thought it was infection plus at least one vaccine dose?

OP, all over 12s will be offered the vaccine, not given. Its strictly only licenced currently for over 12s, so age is the deciding factor, not school year or height, weight or any other.

duffeldaisy · 17/09/2021 08:23

If you did want an infection instead of a second jab (which seems to be the government's insane approach to 12-16s) then they'd be far better off having the infection after the first jab, as the first one gives some protection.
But the idea of an infection being a good thing when you then run the risk of long covid, permanent organ damage, or even death, is really bizarre.

DumplingsAndStew · 17/09/2021 08:26

@duffeldaisy

But then the regular detractors will be along to tell you that children are barely ever affected at all by covid, that permanent or long term problems are fictional and that "long covid" is a product of parental anxiety 😉

I don't think people are suggesting deliberately infecting 11 year olds as a strategy but a lot of our children, including my own 11 year old, have already had Covid so the suggestion is they will already have a level of protection due to the previous infection. I wasn't going to encourage my 14 year old to have the vaccine at this point as he's also recently had Covid but he's keen to have it anyway along with all his mates.
gogohm · 17/09/2021 08:35

It's age not school year I'm afraid, here they are doing them by school year starting with year 11's (plus unvaccinated 6th form) after half term and year 10's 2 weeks later, no other letters sent yet

capercaillie · 17/09/2021 08:53

Our school -all vaccinations for all years on one day at start of November.

Year 7 DD can have it as her birthday in October

Aren’t they?

Frazzled2207 · 17/09/2021 09:27

Disappointing that you have to wait until November. Plenty of time for covid to surge in schools before then!

Tryingtryingandtrying · 17/09/2021 12:11

The OP said the child has had covid? No one is suggesting infecting deliberately.

halcyondays · 17/09/2021 13:58

I really thought they’d have been doing everything possible to get this rolled out quickly. How many will have caught it in school before November especially with close cannot being sent home? It’s an absolute disgrace.

halcyondays · 17/09/2021 13:59

Close contacts, not cannot. They should all have the chance to go to walk in centres, Scotland is doing this I think.

If you could point me to the difference on an 11 and 8 month and a 12 year old that would be great. Some are more developed, especially the girls hitting puberty sooner.

I think it’s a reasonable question to ask

DumplingsAndStew · 17/09/2021 15:52

The immunisation schedule has always been based on approximate age, never on height. There's never been a suggestion this one would be based on anything but age.

marieantoinehairnet · 17/09/2021 16:11

Alright Evil, I have an 11 year old, am well aware they differ, however it's been made blatantly clear in all comms it based on regulation snd age, not whether they have pubes yet or not

BakersHat · 17/09/2021 16:50

12 year olds, not all year 7s HTH.

Am in two minds. Worried about side effect on female hormones of a developing child. Sad

GoodnightGrandma · 17/09/2021 16:53

I am going to be vaccinating in schools and we’re meant to be starting next week, but I’ve not had a single thing confirmed yet, I’ve only had speculation and maybe’s.

FlyingScott · 17/09/2021 17:03

My DS isn’t old enough which I’m not complaining about as it would be a very difficult decision.

DumplingsAndStew · 17/09/2021 17:52

Yeah I can see that being a concern for many. And a valid one.

Hopefully there will soon be some clarity over what would happen if a child decides to wait and see.
