How long after exposure did you text positive/get symptoms?

Hi,
I've looked all over online and found so much conflicting advice about this that I thought I'd come on here so Mumsnetters could have a massive go at me offer some experience in this matter.

Covid is rife at our children's school and both have best friends who have tested positive over the last week who they sit next to/spend lots of time with.

Bearing this in mind we're being as careful as possible and the children are doing LFTs each day. So far, 1 week in they are both still testing negative.

Is it likely they could still test positive a week since exposure because from what I understand most people test positive with Delta within 5 days?

Obviously there must come a point when we stop testing and getting them to spend most of their time in their room?

Any advice anyone?

LFTs are very unreliable so I wouldn't be trusting a negative LFT test to rule out covid.

And stop making them spend all their time in their room!

Theimpossiblegirl · 16/09/2021 10:05

How old are the children? I caught it from my teens within days.
But I couldn't and wouldn't isolate from them completely, one was really upset. Mental health has to come first.

That said, we were all happy to do our own thing in our rooms a lot of the time.

We aren't forcing them to stay in their rooms, just encouraging it. They are teens so tend to spend much of their time in their rooms anyway when they're not at school.

They are teens so generally spend quite a lot of time in their rooms anyway when they're not at school. As they are both testing negative, I'm not too concerned about catching anything from them.

Thank you :) As were up to 7 days I'm hoping they've dodged it :)

Teens are easier to avoid than little ones as long as you keep sending food.

Thoughtcontagion · 16/09/2021 10:38

Teen had it here 5 of us in house including a elderly CEV person, we kept her separate from CEV and DD used mask walking around house, she had to share room with her sister no choice, one bathroom, spent a lot of time in garden, no one else caught it.

I'm not sure I understand really. If your child is still going to school every day could they not still pick it up from different children? For us, I got covid symptoms a day after my DD got them. She presumably picked it up at school (none of us have been anywhere else) but I don't know how long she'd had covid for before the symptoms appeared.

That is a very good point re: they could still pick it up from other children.

I suppose we have been alerted because close friends they both spend lots of time with have both tested positive so it seems more likely one of them could catch it rather than someone they have nothing to do with at school testing positive. If you see what I mean - it seems more of a higher chance of infection because of the proximity.

I think with Delta all bets are off really.

From what I can find online Delta shows up on average at just less than 4 days post exposure compared to the original covid which I seem to remember reading could take up to 3 weeks to present after infection!!!

I think it's bloody good at replicating quickly!

My 2 dds I think are going to test positive and this is one week later. They could have however picked it up from school. I hear there were many cases on the school bus. My DH is symptomatic now and me well, feel it’s inevitable I’ll get it. Awaiting PCRs for all except DS (who can come out of isolation tomorrow). I’ve done my best to socially distance dr DH and kids but god knows if even just entering a room can make you catch it. I am still asymptomaic so will try to be as careful as I can but … DH and I are double vaxxed so I hope it will do its thang

Thank you that's really helpful :)

We are at 7 days after very close exposure to covid and currently no positive tests (after doing quite a few) and no real symptoms other than a bad headache the other night (me), one child had a sore throat for 1 evening and husband has a bit of a cold but I really don't think that counts for much with all the negative test results!!

I think we'll continue testing/avoiding each other for another couple of days then assuming still negative tests file it under 'very lucky' Smile
