What are menopausal women doing about mask wearing & hot flushes?

My work shows no sign of letting up on mask wearing any time soon and I'm thinking this might be a problem for me soonish. I already feel clammy and gross in a mask, so wondering how others cope?

I cope by using HRT, mask wearing would be unbearable with the 40+ hot flushes a day I was having!

Carrierpigeon · 16/09/2021 13:10

Placemarking. I have just started having flushes and get breathless when mask wearing. It wasn't a problem before. I can already see that this will quickly become unmanageable.

I don't wear one any more but I'm lucky enough to work from home so there are very few scenarios where it's expected anyway.

Just had my hair done, both myself and hairdresser had a moment of hot flushes, we both stood apart and pulled down mask until flush passed.

I just have to get on with it. Right from the start, my employers insisted on masks (providing a good supply) , thorough hand washing, lots of sanitiser, strict distancing (even on lunchbreaks) - they said they want staff protected as much as possible and don't want to be in a position where we can sue them!

Not wearing one. I can bear a mask for 10 minutes going round the supermarket, no longer. In other situations I use an exemption lanyard. (I am in scotland where we don't have a choice about mask wearing or not) And even on short trips into Asda, when a flush hits, the mask comes off.

Feel no guilt about this whatsoever.

I have endometriosis and I have a cyst and a fibroid also at the moment so I am continually boiling hot. My job involves working with SEN children and I have had to wear a mask both indoors and outdoors. It has been so gross and sweaty!

Littlelightchink · 16/09/2021 15:20

I've just come out of a building because I started feeling hot and harder to breathe with a mask.

I'm going to make a 1-layer silk or thin cotton one when I get home. It'll do less or little to stop virus transmission but at least I can go about my life.

I have my hair up, go and stand in the air con drug room (carer). Was worse when I had to wear a mask and a face shield. Also change my mask often.

I would consider HRT for lots of reasons including flushes. It has worked for lots of us.

Indeed. But given the waits to see a GP at the moment it takes quite some time from the point you initially decide HRT might help, through to blood pressure tests or whatever, to speaking to the GP again to get a prescription, to starting the drug and feeling the effects.

I am menopausal and don’t find wearing a mask any more difficult than any other items of clothing. I don’t go out unclothed, and I’m sure the general public are very grateful for that!😅

Djifunrsn · 16/09/2021 20:49

Modify the mask so that it is less tight fitting

DramaAlpaca · 16/09/2021 20:50

It's still the law here in Ireland to wear a mask in shops etc, so I just get on with it. It's no big deal.

Tootsey11 · 16/09/2021 21:53

I have rosacea and in menopause. Mask wearing is fun. Not.

gardeninggirl68 · 16/09/2021 21:56

sounds like a good enough reason to be exempt!
