Why doesn't the UK approve inactivated covid vaccines?

The ones that I know of are sinopharm and sinovac, both Chinese. I would consider those as they use well established methods, but the other ones using 'cutting edge technology', I don't trust. Instead of using compulsion at every turn, why doesn't the government offer choice when it comes to the vaccine? It's become a supermarket already, so why not add another variant? (pun unintented)

Have the manufacturer's actually put them forward for UK approval?

If their order books are full, they might not be interested in selling to more places

whatswithtodaytoday · 14/09/2021 13:04

They don't seem to be working as well, so what would be the point?

nordica · 14/09/2021 13:26

The Valneva vaccine is like this too and being produced in Scotland but the government has just cancelled their order. Not sure why.

Sunshinegirl82 · 14/09/2021 13:55

Valneva is still in stage 3 trials in any event. Neither of the Chinese produced vaccines have been approved by the MHRA (I am not aware that either of the companies that produce them have requested approval).

TensmumT · 14/09/2021 13:56

@nordica interesting, I hadn't heard of this one. Wonder why they refused

The Chinese one didn’t hold up particularly well in S America, did it? It didn’t just need a 3 red jab after 6 months as booster, it needed them to add a 3rd jab as part of the routine course to make it work.

I don’t know how well it holds up against delta, but it seems unlikely it will be more effective than the ones we are already using.

I believe the UK govt has already ordered several million doses of a new US vaccine called Novovax, which out-performed Pfizer in its trials re both safety and efficacy.

That's the one I'm encouraging my teens to hold out for (if they want to get one at all).

whatswithtodaytoday · 14/09/2021 17:22

I'm really hoping to get Novavax at some point - I've been following its story and it does seem incredibly effective.

ShaneTheThird · 14/09/2021 17:27

I know sinovac is not particularly effective so would be pointless.

Bobholll · 14/09/2021 18:02

Because they are not very effective for one. Also, the ‘new’ vaccines are not something someone random has magicked up in their heads in light of covid. They’ve been in development for years & years. There’s just never been the money to mass test them nor an illness that has needed such a big response. I know a child who has had a MRNA vaccine as part of cancer treatment. It’s saved his life. They aren’t some flash in the pan idea 🤦🏼‍♀️
