9 year old seems really unwell - at what point do you worry?

All my children have got covid (6 between 5 and 16). Most have had temperature, cold symptoms and been generally miserable but are now improving.

My 9 year old was the last to get ill (shes only on day 4/5) but she seems a lot worse?

She has been being sick, headache and her temperature has been higher (last night it was 39.8) calpol brings it down to about 38. Something.

Shes just got up to go to the toilet and she crawled down the hall - when i asked her why she said she felt too heavy to walk. She also said she feels lightheaded when she stands.

She was talking to me fine so I gave her more calpol and settled her down .

Is there a point i should be worrying about her?

She is generally healthy but very small - she is being investigated for growth hormone deficiency and is about the same size as my 5 year old, but as i say usually really strong and healthy.

You could phone 111 for advice?

BigRedDuck · 14/09/2021 04:48

Really sorry to hear all your kids have got covid OP. How are you doing?
I'd be tempted to give 111 a call and ask their advice. Is she breathless?

Makinganewthinghappen · 14/09/2021 04:53

I could call 111 if she is no better in the morning. She is sleeping peacefully next to me now so in trying to met her sleep a bit.

She doesnt seem breathless i dont think i do have a finger monitor but im not sure how accurate it would be on her her fingers are really small!

Finger monitor will work..... my son had a respiratory episode and we were all shocked at how low is O2 levels went.

Wishing you all the very best.

She maybe dehydrated, you can get dyralite? She also needs to keep rested. If her breathings ok then in general she is alright but the dehydration can be a concern, is she drinking regularly

Anon778833 · 14/09/2021 05:30

I have heard that sometimes people with covid have low oxygen even though their breathing seems ok, may be worth checking out?

I’m sorry that all your kids are ill :( I hope they’re all feeling better soon.

IHateCoronavirus · 14/09/2021 05:37

She sounds like me when I had it. It was the week before schools first locked down. I was being monitored by the oncall doctor over the phone. They prescribed me a medicine that is used mostly for migraines (dissolves between the gum and lip) and that helped massively with the lightheaded/dizziness. I too couldn’t get to the toilet without help.

MRex · 14/09/2021 06:46

You have concerns, that's enough to get medical advice, she should be checked for oxygen levels and any other issues. I understand wanting her to sleep, but if she's extremely unwell the sleep might mask deterioration. Call 111.

JuneOsborne · 14/09/2021 06:49

Do not be afraid to phone for advice. You know her best.

Hopefully she'll be bouncing around this morning after a good sleep. If not, call 111/your GP.

lannistunut · 14/09/2021 06:52

You are worried, so ring for help now.

3asAbird · 14/09/2021 06:56

Sounds awful op. Please seek some help just to check and hope she recovers soon.

I joke all the posters who argue kids don't get sick read this its not pleasant for some and there's no measures in place stop them getting it.

quiteathome · 14/09/2021 06:56

Call for help, her symptoms sound similar to mine though when I had it.

Dialorite (sp) really helped me, and also I ate jelly babies/ haribo to help with energy levels. I think though with a child you need to be more careful and a chat with 111 will help.

I hope they all recover soon.

3asAbird · 14/09/2021 06:57

Meant to say I hope not joke jittery morning fingers. H next to j.

mrshoho · 14/09/2021 06:59

Never worry about being overly cautious when children are unwell. They can bounce back quickly but also get very unwell fast. Call NHS and take their advice. I hope she has a better day today. Flowers

Hi OP. My DD who is 10 had Covid the same time me and DP did. For about 6-7 day she was like a wet dishrag, very similar to your DD. Very High temperature, vomiting, no energy to even hold her head up.

She stayed in bed and I was putting cold flannels on her head and feet, along with calpol to keep her temperature down. We kept bottles of water in our room (none of us had the energy to move) and made her sip water regularly. Days 4 and 5 were her worst and then she slowly started getting better.
Hopefully this may be the case for your DD
Xx

Can you get her to drink regular coca cola?

Kaley3043 · 14/09/2021 14:52

How is she feeling now op? If you are giving calpol maybe worth alternating every 3 hours with ibuprofen to help with her symptoms. I really hope she's better soon. If you feel she isn't getting better may be worth ringing 111.

user64325 · 14/09/2021 21:56

Reassuring to read this, that she is now on the mend. My dd8 is similar, only day 2 of symptoms and she has had a very high fever since last night that paracetamol isn't really helping much with. Blinding headache too, she is really suffering.

Cousinit · 14/09/2021 23:29

You poor thing. Hope you and your children all feel better soon Flowers
