Just wondering what people’s thoughts are on the government’s next phase of ‘handling’ the virus?

I was reading this article and the way I understand it, measures such as the return of masks and WFH will only happen if case numbers rise significantly. I.e. it’s not a foregone conclusion.

That coupled with BJ’s intention to actually repeal some parts of the Coronavirus act such as setting limits on gatherings are not what I expected to happen at all.

Do you think my understanding is correct? What are your thoughts?

Sounds like the living with it phase. They will reintroduce masks at some point possibly, but other than that it’s time to get on with it. That doesn’t mean to say you ignore it, but life does have to resume and we cannot be introducing rolling lockdowns forever and a day.

Howshouldibehave · 12/09/2021 09:02

They want to focus on directing schools to remain open if they go against government guidance

Like when Gavin had a strop with Greenwich LEA for closing schools just before Xmas when rates there were through the roof-just before the next National lockdown. I’m sure that will end wellGrin.

VanGoSunflowers · 12/09/2021 09:03

I agree Chilly
I was actually expecting an announcement that was much worse than this. Obviously, it remains to be seen exactly what he is going to say, but it does seem more like ‘living with it’ rather than ‘more restrictions this winter’

@VanGoSunflowers

I agree, I guess time will tell. It will be interesting to get this winter out of the way I think.

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 09:44

This is a press leak, he's testing the waters, haven't you all learned by now that he's not to be trusted with responsibility

DumplingsAndStew · 12/09/2021 09:58

I won't trust anything BJ is expected to say until he's said it. Even then, I'd take it with a pinch of salt.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 12/09/2021 10:00

I'm really surprised by the suggestion that their is an intention to repeal some parts of the Coronavirus Act at this stage when there is still so much uncertainty around how things will pan out over the winter period.

But I guess it's in keeping with the 'let the bodies pile high' comment allegedly made by Boris. He is a libertarian at heart and tends to go for the crowd-pleasing choice even if it is unclear how reckless this might prove to be in retrospect.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 12/09/2021 10:02

And never trust a poster that uses 'their' instead of 'there'! Whoops.

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 10:03

Of course he can repeal now, doesn't mean he can't reinstate down the line, it's all showmanship, we're world beating, don't you know

applesandoranges221 · 12/09/2021 10:21

I'm still waiting for the explanation of how this winter plan fits in with the removal of restrictions being "irreversible"

Not that I expected him to keep to it obviously but I'm intrigued...

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 10:24

They've just scrapped the lunacy of vaccine passports, but I wonder how much in consulting fees was paid before they got to the decision to scrap...

SonnetForSpring · 12/09/2021 10:30

Its testing the waters and drop feeding... as usual. Anyone who believes anything Boris says needs their head checked.

VanGoSunflowers · 12/09/2021 11:14

I may have reached the stage where I’m starting to not care about what he does or doesn’t say now!
But I must admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this article. I was worried that the irreversible lifting of restrictions would be reversed Hmm

Thewiseoneincognito · 12/09/2021 11:53

The sheer arrogance in thinking we can just live with it and expect Covid to play ball without any preventative efforts from ourselves at all is mind blowing.

Yes we have the vaccines but they DO NOT stop you from getting Covid or passing Covid on. For that reason alone we will have to reimpose restrictions as some point this autumn because people believe they are invincible when the reality could be very different.

High levels of virus in the population is a risk to businesses and services if suddenly the numbers start rapidly rising again.

marieantoinehairnet · 12/09/2021 12:11

People are also forgetting that delta might be nasty, but without any restrictions a much nastier variant will read it's head eventually... probably one that does affect children

Againstmachine · 12/09/2021 12:50

Absolute rubbish the above and you know it is.

If you can work from home please do but if you can't go to work.

November lockdown to flatten the curve but keep schools open and deny kids get it.
The 2nd lockdown will be the last and will save Christmas 🎄!
I'm sorry new varient 🎄 cancelled all of south east tier 4.
School are safe please send child into school. Councils we going take you to court if you disagree .
1 day later after being open 1 day they have to close. Schools are still safe but crossing the road to get to school is not.
March schools are to open we making schools a priority in March and April at least.
By May no we have open up everything, have massive sporting events and festivals plus remove masks.
The outcome school in a lot of places were hell during summer term my son did just 3days for the whole of July.

The pindemic is jolly inconvenient let's practically scrap isolating rules for nearly all and pretend the pandemic is over.
Let's make under 18 non vaccinated same status as double jabbed 18 year old.
Whats the incentive of the jab then?
We know it protects the individual but big questions marks now on how much it reduces transmission.

Let's make jabs in health and social care mandatory but then scrap the passport idea for other sectors they need to be able to make decisions of their own free will.

Lets not make teachers a priority at all.
Let's offer C02 monitors by Xmas of they lucky or until they can find a freind/ donor to give the contact too in the same timely Manner that laptops and tutoring worked.

Let's send 4million jabs to Australia so they can vaccinate their teenagers roughly according to wiki the same amount teens the entire UK has

They be charging for testing soon.

Unless masks , sociall distancing, better ventilation is put in place and everyone who wants one offered a jab plus least self isolating household contacts i fear nhs I for rough ride especially if flu returns too.
I predict a new varient at some point as our borders will be slack.

Winter plan= chocolate tea pot or small spade ♠️ in a blizzard.

All of this, but I also reckon we'll need to add in mass shortages of chocolate teapots snd spades due to Brexit fcuk up
3asAbird · 12/09/2021 13:16

Yes I forgot to mention freedom day is irreversible.
Data not date
Following the science which is constantly contradicted depending what sector you work in.

Apart from NHS I forecast when we have shortages of stock on shelves.
The bins not collected.
School teachers off ill all time then maybe people will realise the unintended consequences of living with covid policy and brexit.
Let it rips more than about deaths and hospitals admissions.

Autumngoldleaf · 12/09/2021 14:45

I think people would feel happier with the learn to live with it phase if they can be assured of health care should it turn nasty.

User135644 · 12/09/2021 19:48

I wouldn't take much notice of Boris's plans, since he reactively makes it up as he goes along.

A year ago it was "let the bodies pile high in their thousands". Early December it was "Boris saves Christmas". Early January it was "back to school, kids".

User135644 · 12/09/2021 19:55

@marieantoinehairnet

They've just scrapped the lunacy of vaccine passports, but I wonder how much in consulting fees was paid before they got to the decision to scrap...
Suggestion that it was just a ruse to throw public money at some of their mates.
alreadytaken · 12/09/2021 20:03

Well this time it's "let the waiting lists grow" isnt it. The bodies wont be piling up in the streets, because we have vaccines and better treatments, but there will be more staffing issues as more people become incapable of work while they wait for treatment. There will also be more sickness benefit being paid so more need for tax increases. God help you if you need an ambulance.

And dont think you can escape by paying for private treatment because most of that relies on NHS ICUs being available and the number of covid cases in ventilation beds is still rising.

Masks need to return now so that we dont get a flu epidemic this year and the NHS can cope with the pressures caused by rising waiting lists.

IcedPurple · 12/09/2021 21:16

I find it amazing how much faith people place in masks.

What evidence do you have that masks 'returning' would lead to all the benefits you outline above?

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 12/09/2021 21:37

Basically 'we' are saying that we're accepting 100 deaths a day (average) from covid, so 30,000 extra deaths a year. I guess that some of those will be taken from people who might otherwise die from flu over the winter. This won't be seasonal though.

I'm not sure there is an alternative from this point onwards for any country, even those who have done well so far. They might have missed the first year deaths, but will end up accepting a certain number once they've done their best with vaccinations.
